Sadness…and legacy

Students,

It is with great sadness that I tell you that my brother, Joel, passed away last night. I was with him, by his side. The funeral is tomorrow in Pennsylvania and I will have family near me.

That’s us. He is on the left. It was his birthday, but he let me cut the cake.

I want to use this as a teaching moment, in part to inspire you, but also because what I have to say is fact, and not the stuff of dreams or ambition:

Writing can and does change the world. When we are all gone, we can be assured that what we write will outlive us.

I know this because my brother wrote for a living. I know this because he would write to me, and I would write back — from a very young age. I probably learned to write my first words because of him. I didn’t want to rely on our mom to write for me. I wanted to be big, grown up.

Back then we wrote by hand or by typewriter. We put a stamp on the envelope, and then we waited for a reply.

His paragraphs were well formed. His revisions, clear. He never talked “down” to me as a little kid. I will show you:

He makes good writing look easy — and it isn’t; but I think the effort is worth the result. When I read him back then, for a moment I could forget that there was a long distance between us (we always lived far away). I forgot I was “reading” and he was “writing.” It’s like the page wasn’t there. We collapsed time and space.

Oh yeah, writing can do that, too.

Like the letter says, the same goes for all of us: “Now, it’s [our] turn to write.”

Multi-Modal, and beyond: WEEK 14

Class, I have extended the due date for handing in your Final Portfolio. It is now May 15.

I also extended the due date for your Multi-Modal project (UNIT 3); it is now May 8.

There will be NO Zoom Class this week. (May 2–7)

A few notes for you:

  1. I don’t expect your UNIT 3 project to be perfect, or anywhere near that. I am looking more at the intention behind your creative efforts. I suggest that you read the assignment carefully, look at the examples of Artist Statements I provide at the bottom of the assignment, and work with The Writing Center for any help you need. If you have not already done so, the video I provided in the assignment will give you insight. Once again, I will copy that here:What is “multi-modal composition”?

    Good question!

Watch this professor explain modal composition to her class. LINKHERE. (This is not a CityTech class, but her explanation is good, and will give you a picture of what this kind of “composition” is!)

  2. Time is always rushed at the end of the semester in a class that does not have a Final Exam (like ours). The way to make things easy on yourself is to look back at your notes over the course of the semester, talk to each other, look at your old assignments in your Student Folder, and get a picture of what sort of learner/learning/challenges you faced. A few notes you make now, will make writing your Final Reflection, and assembling your Final Portfolio much, much easier.      I am not burdening you with lots of small, weekly homework assignments right now, in the hopes that you will manage your time on your own and do the above.

Write to my email with questions, issues. I will send you another post soon.

My best,

-Prof. S.
