Words to Change Our World with Prof. Sarah Schmerler

Assignment #1

One word that describes my feelings towards online college is concerned. This feeling stems from my worries regarding online education. Personally, I don’t believe that a laptop can embody a real classroom environment. Eventually your body and eyes start hurting from staring at a computer screen for prolonged periods of time. You also miss the opportunity to truly interact and get to know your peers. I never envisioned  my college experience and interactions to take place on an online platform.  I currently find  it difficult  to talk to staff; especially when  you are communicating through email and not having a face to face conversation. Also, school responsibilities mix with home responsibilities making it harder to get a quiet and uninterrupted environment. I know online school is going to be an adjustment, however, I still feel fortunate because in spite of the difficult times we managed to make the best of it.

These are my aunt’s dogs. The one on the right is named Sugar and the other one is Sasha. I spend time with them regularly and they alway brighten my day.

Assignment #1

I’m feeling very nervous as we start this fall term online. I was freaking out 10 minutes before we had this class on Wednesday because Zoom wouldn’t load. The clock hit 9:58, and I still couldn’t log in. Zoom is the reason I get sweaty palms. One of my worries is getting to know my classmates. I’ve been a shy person my whole life, and having online classes doesn’t help. It’s already hard for me to have face to face conversations, and now we need to have them through a screen with the help of a camera. I also realized that it’s going to be hard to keep my camera on. I sat on Zoom from 10 am to 3 pm, and I had to turn it off halfway through because my back was in agony from sitting. I know it will take some time to get used to, but I’m excited to start this chapter of my life.

This is Princess, my lionhead rabbit. She keeps me occupied throughout the day, and I enjoy being home with her.

Introducing myself

One word that describes how i’m feeling about this course is confident. The reason why is because i always pictured professors to be strict and mean but once i met professor Sarah, she made me feel so comfortable. Something that i am worried about is the readings. The choice of words can be so difficult for me to comprehend. I’m also concerned that my writing skills aren’t all that great but i’m pretty sure i’ll get better as time goes by and with all the things i will be learning in the future.

This photo means a lot to me because it’s all i have left of her. My aunt passed in 2015 while she was studying to become a registered nurse. I wanted to continue what she was doing so i decided to gain interest in science and working in a hospital. She changed my perspective on life and it still guiding me even tho she is not here physically.
