Homework for Monday, May 4th

Hi Class,

According to our Essay 3 Details we have two things due on Monday: the portfolio and Quiz 3. I am delaying the portfolio, but we will have Quiz 3.

Quiz 3 will consist of four questions. Two questions will be drawn from Colson Whitehead’s essay in our textbook: “The Colossus of New York.” And two questions will be over two types of citations: the personal interview and a book chapter. We will take this quiz at the beginning of the class. Please review these two citation types on Purdue OWL.

I will describe the portfolio project on Monday. It consists of collecting three of your own freewrites and then writing an appraisal of your writing progress.

Prof. Scanlan

Conducting an Interview

Hi Class,

For Essay 3, I recommend making use of an interview. You may find an interview that has already been published, or you may conduct your own interview with a person connected to your site/subject. In either case, the interview is an excellent way to include a PRIMARY resource in your essay (and in your annotated bibliography). Please note that you need at least one primary resource.

Conducting an Interview:

1. Determine your purpose, and be sure it relates to your research question and perhaps even your hypothesis.

2. Set up the interview well in advance. Introduce yourself cordially and professionally. State who you are and why you want to conduct an interview.  Specify how long it will take (15 minutes is a fine length), and if you wish to record the session–always ask permission to record or photograph.

3. Prepare a written list of factual and open-ended questions. Brainstorming or freewriting can help you come up with questions. Leave plenty of space for notes after each question. If the interview proceeds in a new or different direction, don’t panic, let the person speak. Do not feel that you have to be prepared for every question or response. I like this follow-up: “Wow, I didn’t know that…can you explain that a bit more?”

4. Record the subject, date, time, and place of the interview.

5. Thank the person that you interview (in person or by email). Be professional in all interactions.

6. Very important: right after the interview, sit down and rewrite your notes and reflect on the interview. If you do not do this now, you will forget vital information. Do this while it is fresh.

Prof. Scanlan

Homework for Monday, April 27th

Hi Class,

For Monday, keep in mind that we are building toward a research paper that asks you put in considerable hours. Before we get to actually writing the research paper, we first will read and take notes; the Annotated Bibliography is the place to “store” these notes and citations from useful sources. My previous post provides a student sample of a successful  Annotated Bibliography.

For Monday:

1. Type up a brief summary of your proposed topic (or place); then under this summary type five questions that you need to answer. These questions should go beyond something like: when was the Empire State Building built? Ask “how” questions.

2. Read and research for at least three hours. Remember the art of the search–and how hard it can be. Be willing to change the search terms.

3. Bring in at least four citations and their annotations for review and discussion. Typed.

Prof. Scanlan

Student Sample: Annotated Bibliography

Here is a good (not great) example of an Annotated Bibliography. It was written for my class two years ago.
