you might be quite familiar with this picture. yes, this is the government building that was built after the tragic fire and burning down of the movie theater. i took this picture on our walking tour to BHS. this picture shows the statue of a man that fought for the rights of slaves and it also shows the place where the infamous theater once stood. this is approximately a 10 minute walk from city tech. in order to get here you must first exit through the back of city tech next to the library. you make a left and walk down adams st. towards johnson st. make a right on johnson st. and there you will find the building and the statue adjacent to each other. i chose this picture because it shows the history of brooklyn and how the area used to full of entertainment when the theater existed and what it is now.

MY walk to Bhs

My walk to Bhs was Jampacked with intresting things ive never noticed . THings such as the statue by the park ive never once glanzed at it or paid it  any attentoin but after the lady that worked at bhs explained that the man depicted on the statue helped fight against slavery and fought for rights for African americans i understood that i am blind like others in my generatoin to the things around us that shaped where we live now.

Bhs Homework Doe

When we went to Bhs i learned alot of things  the main thing i learned was to pay attetoin to the details. I dont know if anybody noticed but each door hinge had a special design on them  another special thing is that every doorknob had special markings and some even initials . Bhs served as a great place to learn about the impact of time on landscape . Land once used for farming became a transit line and eventually what we stand on today . So many things changed in time and thats the main point i took from my groups pictures.

BHS homework 10/1

On monday,we went to Brooklyn Historical Society and we learned about three different types of maps. one of the map is a Railroad map and the other 2 is cadastral map . One of the cadastral map is also consider as a manufacture map. These 3 map depicts in different ways, When was the map made and why did it still survive today. Looking at the map on monday, some of the place still exist now. Back in the 1942, the subway cost 25 cent a ride , now it costed $2.25. Back then, the subways wasn’t called MTA, it was called Hamstroms. We had 2 property maps and with my group, we saw some interesting details and it also shows the owner’s name one the building that is on the map. One of the map was drawn by hand.

BHS HW – 10/1

On 10/1,  I learned many things from our trip to the Brooklyn Hisorical Society. First off, my classmates and I got see BHS indoors for the first time, and it actually really did look historical, especially in the library, you can feel a historical vibe. One of the maps that interested me was the Subway map. From this map, we go to see the subway lines from 1942. Most notably was the use of only three train lines at the time, less/changed train stops and that there was no MTA, but private comapanies that owned the lines. Also I took a look at a 2 property maps with my group which was kind of interesting seeing building and their owners that lived there at that specific time period, and compare it to the family or person that currently lives there. The map that I might include to accompany my chosen locations would be a pictorial or a Road map, because it can clearly show the location and the distances between each of the destinatons.

Brooklyn Historical Society

On Monday, we went to Brooklyn Historical Society, where we met up again with Julie and Robin. The building is really nice and even antique looking, even the grand stairs creaked! We learned about maps and its collection. My group was assigned three maps but i did the cadastral map also known as a property map of Greenpont Pierre. i learnt that the Greenpont family was a very wealthy family of Brooklyn Heights. Their property extended from Ramsen street to Greenpont and in the middle would be Constable, known today as Montegue street, all the way to the water front at the bay, overlooking New York City.  it was a pretty interesting story and piece of history that Mrs. Robin had shared with us. after that we did some impromptu speeches that Mr. Davis had told us to do and shared with the class our discoveries of Downtown Brooklyn in the 1800s and 1900s. It also did get cold in the library, just like they had said before in class.

i would maybe incorporate a manuscript map or a pictorial map in my destination because i want to show my audience what was along the way, something easier to follow so they dont get bored and not go with it.

homework 10/1 bhs and map

I really enjoyed our trip to the Brooklyn Historical Society. I found it fascinating how much changes over time. It’s incredible that people have managed to save all these documents for later generations to see. It just goes to show how important the past can be to the present and future. I liked the old subway and road maps, so much that I wanted to take one home. I was amazed at how things have changed and stayed the same. Our surroundings are always changing, even if you look at a map from 2003 things are different. The map that I would use to help people find my location, is google maps. Google maps is like a combo of all the different maps we learned about. You can zoom in and out to see different views of a neighborhood and the ones around it.  They are the best, you can view entire neighborhoods that you never even heard of. I always use them to find my way. I think it would be the most sufficient way to find my location since my written directions mostly consist of shops rather than street names and numbers.

my walk to brooklyn historical society

my walk to the BHS was amazing. I didn’t know what to expect. i love the place. the historical society has stacks of books on the shelf. and i learned that as time went pass the types of maps changed.  maps were drown during the early nineteen were not as much information as there were on the late nineteen century. the late nineteen century had more detailed maps with colors and was printed. I learned that where the atrium building of city tech is was once a street.

After visiting the Brooklyn Historical Societ, it made me think of what kind of map I would use to help people visit my site that I talk about in my essay. Since we learned about the differen types , and had to present them in front of the class I have an idea on what kind I would use. The kind of map I would use would be a more modern road map that use the Internet to find you street views and pictures of the area. The reason I would pick this kind of map is simple. First off you can physically see the streets and what is around them. Also you can see businesses and local stores that can help you find your way around this area. It would include land marks such as the BHS and other ones like statues, buildings along with famous street names. Even if you manage to get lost there is a locate me now feature that finds you and directs you to your area and when you start to stray off or go the wrong way it vibrates and tells you to re dirext your self. So since we live in a technologically advanced nation I believe there are no need for paper maps , but instead we need fast virtual ones that cans locate us, guide is better and potentiay take us there as fast as possible. Finally this is how I would make my map , a easy to use virtual one that can help you and guide you at the same time.

Visit to Brooklyn Historical Society

On Monday October 1, for our Effective speaking and English class we went on a trip to Brooklyn Historical Society. Brooklyn Historical society contains content from all throughout Brooklyn`s history as well as from the other 5 borough’s in New York.  As we entered BHS we made our way up to the 2nd floor with two guides that came to NYCCT to give us an introduction as to what BHS is all about. The first thing we did was review some of the rules that pertain to viewing documents at Brooklyn Historical Society. During our trip we had a hands on experience in viewing Brooklyn Historical society’s vast map collection that spans from 1562-2011. Some of the different maps that we viewed are cadastral, historical, nautical, pictorial, political, road, topographical, and manuscript maps. Along with all these maps we examined we were given an activity sheet that eoprtiasn to the maps and we fill them out by analyzing the different features on the map. This was what we learned on our trip as a class to the Brooklyn Historical Society.

“Brooklyn historical society”

On Monday the first the class took a field trip to the Brooklyn historical society. there for the first time we were able to see the library and archives in person. and it was defiantly a sight to be seen. while there we were put into five groups. while in those five groups we were given three maps to evaluate. while  doing so i was able to learn a lot about the Brooklyn of the past and how it differed from current Brooklyn.  behind each building , resident , block and even neighborhood there was some type of story  to be told and some time of important and precious history behind them.  for one instance our group had one map. this map was a property map detailing property owned by the wealthy  pierpont family. in the map it shows a road that once lead to the pierpont family mansion and the blocks that were owned by them and what there were gonna selling off. that street that lead to the pierpont family’s mansion is now called Montague street and now no longer leads to a mansion but now to a board walk further down. through this experience as was able to see some historical architecture just by observing inside the “bhs” building and was able to learn a little about Brooklyn history.
