To get to this place you exit City Tech make a right and walk to the corner of Johnson st and Jay. Pass the Family and Supreme Court and continue walking until you get to the Marriott Hotel right next to the entrance for Jay Street Metro Tech Station (A/C/F trains). Make a right then a left continuing walking pass Potbelly restaurant until you get to the corner of the block then cross the street until your standing in front of the Brooklyn Municipal Building. Walk to the end of the block and you should see a Starbucks then cross the street until you are standing in front of Starbucks make a left and continue walking straight pass the Dunkin Donuts, Chase bank, Barnes and Nobles and the Court Street Theater and the American Apparel and Rite Aid pharmacy. At this point you should be on the corner of Court st. and Atlantic av. directly across the street from Trader Joe’s. Now cross the street until you are standing in front of the Trader Joe’s Entrance, this is where I took this picture.
This building is over 150 years old. It was formally known as the South Brooklyn Savings Institute and now it’s a Trader Joe’s Market. I use to walk pass this building all the time and not realize that it is a landmark building. On the building there is a plaque that reads: Near this place during the Revolutionary War stood Ponkiesberg fortification from which General George Washington is said to have observed the fighting at Gowanus during the Battle of Long Island August 27 1776. Which not only shows the rich history of the building but the neighborhood around it. I think this is a perfect example of the Juxtaposition of old and new Brooklyn.
