A Day in the Life: SF x NY

Before the event.

When I saw the first posting of this event I was skeptical because I wasn’t a member of AIGA. As a member of the COMD Facebook page I browse the opportunities that are posted by other members and I saw a posting for this event and looked under the comments. I read through the comments and someone posted a link to a cheaper price for the tickets to the event, so the price went from $30 to $7 (if you’re not a member of AIGA) so I purchased a ticket.

Event Day.

As I got to The New School PARSONS about 30-45 mins early I had to wait in the lobby outside the security gate because they wouldn’t let no one in until closer to the event. Then as they finally let me in, I was the first one there so I had to stand to the side and wait until it was time to sign in. So I waited for about another 30 mins and then I finally got to sign in and got some souvenir pins from Goggle and headed in the auditorium. As I sat down waiting for the event to start I noticed the woman next to me messing with this box and I looked around and I saw others with it, so I asked where did she get the box from and she said the sign in desk. So, I got up and hurried to the sign in desk and the woman who signed me in forgot to give me a Google Cardboard box ( I guess because I was one of the first to sign in). Headed back to my seat I continued to wait but now I was messing with the Google Cardboard trying to see how to use it.

The event finally started and it was about the Day in the Life of people within some of most popular companies like: Google VR, Facebook, Uber, Buzzfeed, Etsy and a freelance writer and comedian. They each went through a previous day of the week showing picture and some video of places they go, what they do at work and their relaxation time after, before or during work. Everyone’s speech was informative, great, entertaining and inspiring.

I wrote down a couple of questions while everyone was speaking because there was a Q & A after the speeches. So as they speech portion of the event closed they opened up the floor for questioning. The room was dead silent and I looked around shocked because I assumed that people couldn’t wait to ask a question, so a few more seconds went by and I just decided to raise my hand because I had at least 5 questions written down and I wanted to ask at least one. My question was for Tom (who worked at Buzzfeed) and during his speech he talked about his cat and I believe he was the only one that said he had a pet so I asked him “How old is your cat?” (my question might have seemed random to everyone else) but I was serious and really wanted to know how old his cat was because I love cats and I have one of my own and he is like my baby. Everyone bust out laughing and after a long laugh from everyone even Tom he quietly said “8” and then more people started to raise their hands to ask more questions.

After the questions were done the writer and comedian Sarah Cooper was giving a signed copy of her book away, so they tried to give the book away with seat numbers but every row had the same number so Sarah decided to give the book away to the first person who asked a question. WHICH WAS ME!!!!!!!!! I was so excited and thanked Sarah multiple when she handed me the book. After the book giveaway it was time for the networking portion and that’s only if you decided to stay after. During the networking portion they had pretzels, wine and beer for everyone to enjoy while talking with the speakers from the event and also had extra google pins and Google Cardboard. I talked to a couple of people and some people came up to me because they wanted to take a peek at the book that I just won. After, talking to people I wanted to Thank Sarah again for the book and also asked her a few questions regarding her career and how she makes her money since she is her own boss. She answered my questions and told me to enjoy the book, which I eventually did and I love it. I have a picture of the book, some google cardboard glasses and some pins that I got.The event was amazing and I wish there were more events exactly like this one and I will be looking out for more from AIGA and other companies.
