“No Church in the Wild” by Kanye, feat. Jay-z and Frank Ocean

The song that I had chosen is “No Church in the Wild” by Kanye West, featuring Jay-Z and Frank Ocean. The lyrics to the song are just like a poem. The use of diction, connotation, rhyme scheme, image and assonance is present in this song.

The reason why I like hip hop so much, it doesn’t try to achieve the lyricism of a great written or spoken poem. Hip hop’s strategy of not having to be poetry pursing is brilliant, it’s freeing and it sounds powerful. In the hook is says “Human beings in a mob, what’s a mob to a king? What’s a king to a god? What’s a god to a non-believer? Who don’t believe in anything?” this where the rhyme scheme is simple, and it’s nicely buried by enjambment and the effect of the images.

“Tears on the mausoleum floor, blood stains the coliseum doors” the image is quite so clear in this line. The diction of this song is when Jay-Z  say’s “lies on the lips of a priest” the singer words of choice or phrase some might say it so realist especially when her on the news, what certain priest have done something to someone else that was against the law.

Kanye said “make a stripe like a zebra” as in white lines meaning the drug cocaine and the black stripe is the color of the skin. This is also is an image. There are a few lines that are connotations and assonance. If you look deep into this song, it gives you a lot of visual and reality and it’s great to try to analyze it as well.
