Chapter 6: Symbol, Allegory, and Irony

Reading Blake’s “Chimney Sweeper” poems

We’ll read William Blake’s “The Chimney Sweeper” (1789) from Songs of Innocence (181-2 in our textbook), and also “The Chimney Sweeper” (1794) from his Songs of Experience. Since Blake illustrated these books, we will examine the illustrations as well.

We will also discuss Emily Dickinson’s “Because I Could Not Stop For Death” (336-7)

In addition to discussing Chapter 6, we will workshop Essay #1 drafts and review how to complete the assignment, including formatting a Works Cited page and setting up a Dropbox account (you will get an invitation from me–follow that!) and using it to submit Essay #1 electronically.
