Active Reading Checklist

Check the statements that describe the reading strategies you use.

 

  I stop and check if I understand what I am reading.
  I make mental pictures.
  I mark (underline, highlight, circle, etc.) confusing parts
  I mark (underline, highlight, circle, etc.) unfamiliar words.
  I reread to understand confusing parts and unfamiliar words.
  I look up the meaning of an unfamiliar word that I can’t figure out.
  I draw pictures, graphs, and charts to help me understand confusing parts.
  I stop and retell to check what I remember.
  I reread to remember details.
  I underline, highlight, or mark key words and ideas.
  I make brief notes on the margins to briefly summarize.
  I read the captions under and above pictures, charts, and graphs.
  I ask questions and read to find answers.
