My favorite part of the movie is when Jackie kept showing up to the different places linnet and Simon went to because it was setting up the movie for something bad to happen and made me feel like she was the killer but then made me doubt myself when she had an alibi, it did match up to the novel she did show up to all the places linnet and Simon went to while I was reading kept wondering if she was going to be the killer but once she had an alibi I kept trying to guess who it was.
How does the telegram that Linnet accidentally intercepted become the âvegetarianâ clue that tells Race who the dangerous agitator is?
It becomes the vegetarian clue because the telegram is written in code that was used in South African rebellion the vegetables are associated with different types of ammunition and because Race knows that Richetti is a known killer Race assumed that because Linnet saw the telegram Richetti would kill her so she wouldn’t repeat what the telegram said.
Out line
Intro/ Thesis: The graphic memoir Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi published 2000 is about the life of Marji who was growing up at the time of the Islamic revolution. She leaves and then comes back to Iraq years later, no longer wanting to be controlled by the government or anyone she as an adult decides to move to France to continue her studies and become a person of her own. Using Linda Costanzo Cahir three types of literature-to-film translations the end scene of when Marji is at the airport on her way to move to France in the film maintains its plot and settings but leaves out minor details that are in the graphic memoir making it a traditional translation. A traditional translation maintains the overall traits of the written work (its plot, settings, and stylistic conventions) but revamps particular details in those ways that the filmmakers see as necessary and fitting.
Film Concepts:
Color â At the end of film it switches from black and white to color when she arrives in France almost like Marji is starting a new life with great possibility and leaving the end of the war which most see as bleak and depressing, but in the graphic memoir it stays black and white because it ends at the airport in Iraq with Marjs grandmother crying which is a sad scene. Even though both film and memoir end in different scenes they both maintain the plot and story line which proves itâs a traditional translation.
Sound- The sound in the film is non- diegetic at the end scenes the music changes from sad to a slow calm guitar as Marji leaves her parents and grandmother and arrives in France, almost like she is sad that she must leave but sheâs content with her decision. In the graphic memoir the writer Marjane Satrapi makes you feel content with Marjis decision to leave which translates to the film.
Exchange Concept:
Sacrifice- In the film in The End scene when Marji was leaving and saying goodbye to everything and everyone, she knows to make something of herself in France the shots of the settings fade to black before changing to a different setting, when it changes to the airport setting the shot is a wide shot before Marji starting talking then it zooms in to show the emotion of what sheâs giving up to pursue her dreams. The End scene in the memoir the scenes are almost all medium shot only showing from the knees and waist up and they donât fade to black, sacrifice is shown when sheâs saying goodbye to her family the illustration shows her crying but smiling at the same time and then waving at them from a far, which translates different in the film because she doesnât look back once she says goodbye almost like if it was too hard for her to.
Termes From five Part Reading:
Character- Marji grows up and matures as a person in the graphic memoir and film the translation of this is similar but is also different. Â In the end of The Dowery scene in the memoir Marji is leaving her parents to go to Vienna it illustrates her being scared of leaving by herself and crying while all the shots are medium and in the film there is movement in the background as well as her parents facial expressions giving her an encouraging smile as to not worry her, which isnât shown in the memoir making it a necessary edit to show that even though they need her to go they donât want her to go. In the End scene in the memoir, now as an adult she is sad but happy and content with her decision to moving on to bigger and better things when sheâs in the airport and in the film sheâs sad that sheâs leaving her family and home country but doesnât want to look back because itâs too hard for her meaning that she no longer needs her parents even though she wants them making it also a necessary edit to show how sheâs grown up as a person.
Setting- In the memoir the scene The Dowery shows the airport where there is a guard checking Marjis bag the graphics arenât as sharp and detailed there are figures in the background, but they are all shaded in black. In the film everything is more detailed even the people in the background and the guards face arenât shown which helps with the translation because it gives the audience more feeling of her being in an airport with other people traveling. In the scene The End in the memoir they donât show much of the airport like they do in the film which helps the audience see what happens after she leaves her family giving the revamp of the scene necessary.
According to Britannica by The Editors of Encyclopedia Britannica Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi born October 26, 1919, TehrÄn, Iran and died July 27, 1980 in Cairo, Egypt. He was educated in Switzerland and returned to Iran in 1935. Â He was the shah of Iran from 1941 to 1979, and maintained a pro-Western foreign policy and fostered economic development in Iran. He was the eldest son of Reza Shah Pahlavi, an army officer who became the ruler of Iran and founder of the Pahlavi dynasty in 1925. He replaced his father on the throne September 16, 1941. He was then overthrown in 1941 by an invasion of allied British and Soviet troops who thought he was allies’ the enemy, Nazi Germany. This relates to the story of Persepolis because in the story it mentions the fall of Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi who is known as just Shah, in the Chapter âThe Partyâ. It illustrates that he was trying to impose democracy on the people of Islam after so many people were killed. He tried to appoint dozens of prime ministers and with that people took down his statues. After he was overthrown by the people, the country had a party. Which is slightly different then what happened in real life.
My favorite chapter in Persepolis was the end of âThe Partyâ because the mom taught Marji a valuable lesson. Marji was going to beat up Ramin with nails for the actions of his father but her mom stopped her and asked her how would she like to have her ears nailed to the wall, and said that even though Ramins dad killed people and Ramin himself believed it was the right thing to do she should forgive him because heâs too young to understand, which shows that even though they are going through all this trauma, and people turning on each other Marji parents are still trying to teach her to forgive those who have done wrong even if they go against what you believe. Another one of my favorite chapters was âThe Jewelsâ because it remined me of the pandemic when everyone was stocking up on supplies and how they were fighting over toilet paper just like the ladies in the market were fighting over the last item. I also found it funny how Marji mom criticized the women in the market for taking more than what they needed and then suggested going to another store to buy more things just in case. She was being a hypocrite and even Marji was confused.
The story To Build a Fire by Jack London made me feel upset that the man didnât think things through before making the trip. If he had the advice from the old man, he should have taken it and not traveled by himself and in that weather. The way the author used imagery in the story it made me feel like I was there with the guy feeling the cold weather and going through with him in the struggle of walking in the freezing cold. The story also made me feel suspense when he couldnât get the fire started. I also knew it was too good to be true that he had gotten the fire going in the first try, I was waiting for something bad to happen especially since he had already started losing feeling in his hands once the snow fell and the fire went out, I knew he wasnât going to make it by himself. I was hoping that by the end of the story someone would have saved him or found him after the dog howled. But I guess not stories have a happy ending, at least the dog lived even though the guy was being selfish and tried to kill it to save himself.
