TRADITIONAL RESEARCH

The first thing I learned from Alexandria Lockett is that back then in order to do a research paper you had to go to the library. It was physical labor to go to the library you had to talk to a librarian to tell you where the books are that you are looking for and go threw books and books of research. In our days we don’t need to go to a library we could just go on our computer and search it on the web.

The second thing I learned is that even though we have the internet to help us make life easier it is also hard to find the right research you need. Finding the right research is hard because there is so much information they that they give you and this takes time for us to look threw all of it.

The third thing I learned is that technology is good for us because we could use this to help others with problems and teach people things online like vocabulary, science, literature and more.

Wikipedia Research

What I learned from the Wikipedia Research was that research is creative and it helps us develop a new understanding on what we are researching on. Research could even be work that you did in the past. Research is collecting data on the topic you are researching on.

The second thing I learned is that there are different types of research like scientific research, Historical research and more. Scientific research is like doing experiments and seeing what works and what doesn’t. This helps scientists to understand more on what they are researching on. Research helps for also history, business and other things.

The third thing I learned is that research is really important to do. If we never did any research on something we will never understand anything.

I have learned a lot about the transformation and definition of “research” through Wikipedia and the article “the traditional research paper is the best”. From the article, I learned that before the internet finding sources were not only time-consuming because they required more physical activity and human interaction but sometimes the book lacked primary sources and instead relied on what was considered “questionable secondary material”. So before the internet, a lot more effort and research would have to be put into account before writing down information. Another thing that I learned from the article is although we have the internet to our use it might not always be the best place to research due to the vast majority of options we receive after pressing enter. I believe the author was trying to portray this message when she said “ it hardly seems appropriate, or far, to ask any student, regardless of classification, to wade through oceanic swamps of online data for the specific purpose of making an original contribution, as a single author, to some public policy debate or academic discipline”. Lastly one more thing that I learned from the article is that online research is more likely to lead to plagiarism. The Arthur states this when saying “ thousands, if not millions, of students, will use Google and Wikipedia as first steps towards plagiarizing work. Plugging into an abyss of boredom or cultivating take curiosity about his subject”.

While reading the article about research one of the things I learned is the different kinds of research such as research and humanities, artistic research, and scientific research. The one that stuck out the most to me was scientific research a “ systematic way of gathering data in harnessing curiosity“. I also learned about the different research methods such as exploratory research, constructive research, and empirical research. Lastly, I learned about the flaws in research, this is basically talking about how not all that u read on a topic is true it could be someone’s bias opinion on the subject at hand.

After reading Alexandria’s Lockett, The Traditional Research Paper is Best, I learned a few different things about research. Her writing reinforces the use of technology to find the things we need compared to the use of libraries and other resource tools that would now be considered dated in terms of the way we currently find the answers we need to the questions we ask. Lockett writes, “typically, a first-year college student’s research paper assignment might require 5–10 sources, whereas advanced students are probably asked to cite no more than 30 sources. These figures may stem from research concerns that emerged during an entirely different technological history.” In this, Alexandria is explaining that due to technological advances, requirements have changed, due to effort it takes to get to the end result as well. She also explains that some textbook writers have complained about the number of resource papers that have actually lacked primary sources due to them relying on “questionable” secondary materials. Lastly, she explains that the labor that’s involved in research and the use of the internet tends to be ignored by others. Both educators and other professionals may not understand the time and effort it takes to examine online sources for works, she explains. We find that there may be “almost 19,000,000 results” for a Google Scholar search when you research “the research paper”, which takes time for students to comb through.

The Wikipedia page entitled Research explains what research is. I learned a new definition of research being that it’s a “Creative and systematic work undertaken to increase the stock of knowledge”. I understood this as simply research is a creative way to learn something new in a way that is systematically organized. According to the Wiki page, the primary purposes of research are documentation, discovery, interpretation, and the research and development of methods and systems for the advancement of human knowledge. The Wiki page also explains that the word research comes from the Middle French “recherche”, meaning to go seek about.

Traditional research

1. As of now the convenience of technology helped us a lot specially in doing researches online. It can help find any data you need as long as you give the correct/good keywords.

2.As previous mention, by giving the correct keyword the data result of your research can be given less than a second, all you have to do is choose the resource(s) you want. In the past it used to be more “literal” with doing researches, you needed place like library to get knowledge you need, but as of now we have everything that makes our lives easier.

3.The best thing of using technology to do research is that it gives you all the resources, and even videos to demonstrate the experiment. Even better, people can leave comment below to consult with others and make corrections if needed.

Wikipedia Reasearch

1. Scientific researches- The process of constructing an experiment with variety of steps to prove what the hypothesis is correct or not. It is to first choose a topic then make an assumption of what’s going to happen next, then its to introduce the theory behind the experiment, gathering data, then result.

2. Historical researches- using techniques and evidence to write what has happen in the past. There are various history guidelines that are commonly used by historians in their work, under the headings of external criticism, internal criticism, and synthesis.

3. Future Perspective-Due to financial issues in both East and Western world the research in everything on both sides has been difficult for all nations to improve economics. Like China and South Korea demands more funding toward education and others.

The Traditional Research Paper is the Best by Alexandria Lockett is about the transition from the former way of writing papers to current forms of writing papers. Lockett compares and contrasts the way research papers are researched and how evidence is found. Lockett believes that the traditional paper is no longer the same because of the use of the internet, the lack of searching from a book.

“Due to technological, and thus pedagogical limitations, the traditional research paper is incapable of translating the affordances of research writing to online environments. Therefore, research 2.0 should respond to the significance of human interaction with the Internet and the politics of big data.”

“Unfortunately, the labor involved in researching and using the Internet for research tends to be ignored. Their teachers will obediently, and sometimes zealously, police plagiarism with the assistance of Google’s robust search engines and Turnitin”

“For example, some textbook writers used to complain about how research papers often lacked primary sources and relied on questionable secondary materials despite physical libraries’ numerous resources.”

Wikipedia:

“Another definition of research is given by John W. Creswell, who states that “research is a process of steps used to collect and analyze information to increase our understanding of a topic or issue”. It consists of three steps: pose a question, collect data to answer the question, and present an answer to the question.”

“The Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary defines research in more detail as “studious inquiry or examination; especially : investigation or experimentation aimed at the discovery and interpretation of facts, revision of accepted theories or laws in the light of new facts, or practical application of such new or revised theories or laws”

“However, some researchers advocate for the reverse approach: starting with articulating findings and discussion of them, moving “up” to identification of a research problem that emerges in the findings and literature review. The reverse approach is justified by the transactional nature of the research endeavor where research inquiry, research questions, research method, relevant research literature, and so on are not fully known until the findings have fully emerged and been interpreted.”

THE TRADITIONAL RESEARCH PAPER IS BEST

  1. Availability of resources: because of the availability of the internet now day research has become much easier than before. You just search for a topic and There are thousands of sources available for you. Before the internet was available the teachers used to complain about students’ research because of the lack of recourses present there.
  2. Time consumption: past the researches used to take a very long time because students have to get their information and resources from the library books, which is a long process. Nowadays students can collect their information from the internet at any time. Nowadays a Large number of resources available on the internet, which saves a lot of time.
  3.  Creativity: when we search about a topic on the internet there are thousands of data and resources available there. It is a creative work to summarise, annotate, interpret and appropriately analyze them. Which increases the researcher’s background knowledge.

WIKIPEDIA RESEARCH ARTICLE

  1.  research ethics: The normative questions that occur while or as a result of research operations, as well as the ethical actions of researchers, are all addressed by research ethics. To ensure that humans, animals, and the ecosystem are not damaged unnecessarily in science, specific measures for ethical governance in research are needed.
  2.  Future perspective: Support cuts for university research have happened in the Western academic world, most prominently in the United Kingdom and some state governments in the United States, which some suggest may contribute to the potential loss of Western supremacy in research. on the other hand in East Asia especially in China and South Korea, they are investing in university research.
  3. Meta-research: Meta-research is known as “research on research.” Meta-research seeks to cut back on duplication and improve the consistency of research around the board. The discovery of bias, methodological defects, and other errors and inefficiencies is the aim of meta-research. The poor rates of reproducibility over a wide variety of fields are one of the results of meta-research.
