Melinda, Smith. “Dealing with Teen Depression.” HelpGuide.org, 2020, www.helpguide.org/articles/depression/teenagers-guide-to-depression.htm.

Depression is a serious matter, feeling hopeless and lonely all the time is a sign of depression. Teen depression is very serious, we tend to go through so much during our teenage years. Getting angry and sad over the littlest things, crying all the time, or even having sleepless nights. These are all signs of depression; overtime depression can get worse for some people in which teens become suicidal. This happens when you can’t find any solution to your problems, or you just start to feel like everyone, and everything is against you. But at the end of the day, you got to remember no matter how you feel just know these feelings will pass. Teenagers go through so much pressure, that’s what causes depression. They have so much going on they don’t know how to deal with it. On top of that in the new generation, people don’t know how to understand each other. Instead, if someone tells us they’re depressed our response to them would be “go see a doctor”, “it’s not that serious”, “we all go through it”, “you’ll get over it”. We really never understand anyone’s emotions, that’s why many teens suffer because they’re afraid to tell anyone how they feel. Another reason for teen depression would be family problems, that’s a big one that affects most teens. There’s so much drama going on in our household that we get tired of hearing it every day, which we then want to find an escape from. Living in a toxic household could get very frustrating, having your parents fight can have a bad impact on us teens. “It can be hard to open up about how you’re feeling—especially when you’re feeling depressed, ashamed, or worthless, accepting your feelings and opening up about them with someone you trust will help you feel less alone”. This quote caught my attention because it’s true that many people out there don’t know how to share feelings, talking about myself personally I have a very hard time talking to another person when I feel upset or annoyed, because I just think “what can they possibly do to help me feel better nothing”. But talking to someone and letting that person know how you feel can make it so much easier for you, you’re letting go of all negative energy. This can help clear your mind, this is so important because we relieve stress. This will help you connect to one another when you feel lonely.

Horning, Colin. “Pay for play, compensate student athletes.” UWIRE Text, 1 Apr. 2021, p. 1. Gale OneFile: News, link.gale.com/apps/doc/A657020484/STND?u=cuny_nytc&sid=STND&xid=a11e5200. Accessed 6 Apr. 2021.

According to the article “Pay for play, compensate student-athletes.” Ms.Colin is stating that college athletes should be getting  payment for the work that they are putting in either on the field, cort or in the stadium. Of course, they wouldn’t be getting paid millions as if they were pro athletes but they should still be getting some sort of payment other than scholarships for their college, they also need money for their daily lives and dorm room essentials. This has been a discussion for the NCAA for a while now and after years of the altercation, there has finally been some traction being gained. The United States Supreme Court is currently hearing oral arguments on the case of NCAA vs. Alston ( “The United States Supreme Court case dealing with the compensation of collegiate athletes within the National Collegiate Athletic Association”)and so far the direction in which the discussion is going it seems as if the issue will be coming to resolve soon. I believe Ms.Colin Hornings article is a credible source because upon reading the article I also did my own research about the case of NCAA vs. Alston and it seems like her statements are correct. I believe Ms.Colin chose this as a topic because she seems to be interested in issues that include the supreme court and the people. The author chose an article because she is giving facts about the issue regarding college students but at the same time in certain parts she is starting to state her personal opinion on the matter and how she feels towards it and although I might agree with her, her feelings toward the matter may seem bios to other people that might be trying to form their own understanding of the situation. But this article was not only for factual input it was also to state how it affected her hearing about college students that didn’t get paid and struggled to get food and still put forth their efforts to participate in the school sport. A prime example of her stating facts and putting her opinion behind it when she states “after years of debate over whether college athletes should be allowed to profit off of their role should be in place or not, there is finally some traction being gained. That being said, why has it taken so long for this discussion to become more mainstream, and what will likely be the end goal of it?” In this statement, I believe she’s saying this issue has been going on for so long so as an end result the athletes should get a small bonus for having to deal with lack of payment for so long.

Divorce in the different cultures.

1st Annotated Bibliography

Huang, Wei‐Jen. “An Asian Perspective on Relationship and Marriage Education.” Family Process” vol. 44, no. 2, Blackwell Publishing, 2005, pp. 161–73, doi:10.1111/j.1545-5300.2005.00051.x.

The author of the article “An Asian Perspective on Relationship and Marriage Education” Wei-Jen Huang is the Chinese clinical psychologist who was born and raised in Taiwan, and later trained and based in United States.

According to the article “An Asian Perspective on Relationship and Marriage Education” which was written by Wei-Jen Huang (2005), author wants to point out the general trends in the institution of marriage, divorce rate and couple relationship education among Asians in China, Taiwan, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia and India. The author asserts that, “Thirty years ago divorce was very rare in most Asian countries. However, in recent years, the pattern of marriage and divorce has changed dramatically in many parts of Asia.” Moreover, Wei-Jen Huang reports that, the divorce rate in some Asia countries, has increased quite dramatically (for example: Korea, Japan, and Taiwan), while in others, divorce rates have increased more gradually (for example: India). On the other hand, in Malaysia, the Muslim divorce rate has actually decreased in the last 2 years. Also, this article implies some key influences on divorce across Asian countries.

The first influence is “Rapid economic growth, urbanization, and the changing cultural norms in Asian societies.”  Nowadays, the modern society is more focused on a carrier advancement and wealth, which leads to negative impact on both quality and stability of marital relationship. priority. The second influence is “Enhanced choice through educational/employment opportunities for Asian women.” In modern society, women in Asia have become more educated and economically independent, they have more choice to divorce with the partner who abuse them and make relationship in an unacceptable way. Third, “The loosening of social control over marriage.” Fourth, “The divorce laws in most Asian countries have become more lenient” Fifth, “The growing individualism”. The last of is “The rise of ‘‘romantic love’’ and the gradual decline of arranged marriages.” The first contribution is to stop the arranged marriages. The second is to rise the education level which leads to decrease of divorce level.

In conclusion, author Wei-Jen Huang strongly believes that high-quality marital education, therapy, and supervision are needed in all Asian nations in order to prevent divorces. In addition, author asserts, in order to build healthy marriage, people must address values and concepts such as commitment, forgiveness, responsibility, self-reflection, sacrices.

In my opinion, Wei-Jen Huang’s article is a good beginning point for preventing divorces in Asia countries, because it has good research which is based on his own experience of conducting information, statistics and reliable sources.

Derived on Wei-Jen Huang’s experience, who was studied in the United States and working as a clinical psychologist, he is highly credible. Huang’s style of writing is academic and his purpose to inform reader about trends of marriage and rising of divorces in Asia countries. Moreover, the genre of the article is a peer reviewed journal. I believe that author chose that genre because he is working as a psychologist and he conducted a lot of research while he was working with patients. I think that, Huang’s article is a good for the intended audience who is interested in marriage education and divorce rate in Asia culture.

“Given the data on the negative effects of marital conflict and divorce (Markman &Halford, 2005) and the increasing divorce rate in various parts of Asia, we can start to imagine the pain and distress experienced by Asian family members. As marital disruption continues to increase, more and more Asians will be motivated to seek help, both in terms of therapy and prevention.” I think that, this quote is very helpful and informative because author tried to research a lot and show that divorce rate is increasing in Asia countries therefore, people should ask for help in terms of therapy and prevention.

Natural Disasters

  (1) Reilly, K. M. & Casteel, T. (2012) Natural disasters: investigate Earth’s most destructive forces: with 25 projects. White River Junction, Vermont: Nomad Press.

           (2) Tsunamis have been occurring for centuries, and it either gets worse, or manageable. I say manageable because although a huge wave of water that can kill millions can never be conversant with, people still know what to expect when it happens due to the protocols in their current living area. Earthquakes and tsunamis have many similarities, even though they create their own “natural disaster”, they also work together in a certain way. For example, earthquakes are formed by the shift in tectonic plates within the earths crust, and the bigger the earthquake, the bigger the tsunami will be. Tsunamis major hotspots are the Pacific Ocean near the subduction zones, Aleutian Islands, Alaska, Chile, Philippines, Japan, etc. The author Kathleen M. Reilly is a science teacher and also an award winning writer for her many books, while Tom Casteel is an illustrator and cartoonist; Tom also illustrated over two dozen books for Nomad press and graduated from a cartoonist school in 2011. The author’s intended audience is children of a certain age who one likes to look at pictures to have a better understanding and two, children of a certain age who is learning about the topic as well. (3) In my opinion, this story was helpful for it’s age group. The author used more pictures and models for better understanding to her intended audience and stated as much details about the tsunamis, and their hotspots as possible, etcetera. (4) Although, I do not think the author is credible because her writing style was weak, and her purpose was not explicitly established. (5) Therefore, I believe the author chose this genre because it is a simple topic, and easy research. I also feel like the topic is not much of a challenge, anyone can google the hotspots, the reason why it occurs, the amount of damage it causes, and write a story about it as if it were their own idea, their own hard and dedicated work that came up with the conclusions and results to why and how this disaster occurs. (6) One key quote that I find important to this disaster is, “A tsunami can completely devastate an area”. Now you may ask, “what is so interesting about this quote?”, “why would it be labeled as a key quote?”. I label this quote as a key quote because it gives the word tsunami it’s meaning. If no one could ever understand what a tsunami does through all that scientific talk, all they must know is, a tsunami can devastate an area, a tsunami can bring more destruction to earth than anyone can imagine, a tsunami can grow bigger and bigger with or without a warning and there is nothing anyone can do about it. Water is not harmless, and neither is the earth in general.

Apaak, Daniel, and Emmanuel Sarpong. Internal Challenges Affecting Academic Performance of Student-Athletes in Ghanaian Public Universities. , 2015, files.eric.ed.gov/fulltext/EJ1080130.pdf.

Apaak & Sarpong is empirical research that investigates the internal challenges that affect the student-athletes performance. The study was done in Ghanaian public varsities and was intentioned to illustrate why a typical student’s athlete might face challenges in his or her academic course. Notably, the research cohort employed the descriptive survey research approach and chose 1158 student-athletes from seven public universities in the country as named above. However, the criteria used in selecting the universities are that they must have participated in the 2014 university sports at Cape Coast. Further, by using simple random sampling, 332 respondents were chosen from the seven universities, and a questionnaire was the instrument that the researchers used to gather data for analysis. Mainly, the questionnaire was purposed to obtain information regarding the internal challenges that affect the student’s athletes.

The research findings established that the student’s athletes face a unique set of challenges than other students who do not get engrossed in sporting activities. Accordingly, they spend significant time training on the sports which may detrimentally affect their studies. Further, it was noted that much time is also spent on traveling, and since some of the athletes have poor time management skills, they miss a lot in their lectures and assignments. Furthermore, some students spent a lot of time thinking about improving their sporting activities.

These findings will be significantly helpful in preparing my research paper. It will help in debunking how university sports permeates society politically, educationally, psychologically, and more so, financially. Accordingly, it will help showcase how the student-athletes are an image to the universities, although this comes at a high cost since most of them compromise their study time. This study will be a good basis to argue that the student’s athlete compromises their academic performance as they are likely to suffer pregnancy, learning disabilities, substance abuse, identity foreclosure, and mental health disorders.

Indeed, the research by Apaak & Sarpong is an exposition of the challenges that university student-athletes face while attempting to balance academics and sporting activities. This research will form the basis of my recommendations as it showcases stakeholders’ role in addressing the situation. For instance, it showcases the need for the stakeholders to collaborate in creating a sports schedule that will not disrupt a student’s academic year and offer them sufficient time for study and attain commendable grades.

Now in baseball, there are so many unwritten rules that most people when they hear the phrase think baseball or MLB. The source I have chosen to discuss this is a youtube video from a former MLB player on his opinion named Matt Antonelli. In this video titled “top 10 unwritten rules in baseball,” this actually part two to another video of his with the same title he gives an opinion from a former play and a new fan which is giving you an opinion from both sides of the argument. Throughout the video, he touches on many of baseball’s unwritten rules, and the first I would like to discuss is the rule on not swing when the pitch count is 3-0 meaning 3 balls and 0 strikes. Matt brings up a moment where a player name Fernando Tatis jr hit a grand slam on a 3-0 count and how it sparked controversy with a lot of baseball players and baseball fans. Now, this also ties in with another rule about not running up the score in baseball because the score prior to this was 10-3 with Tatis team the padres being in the lead, Matt goes on to say how the rule is “silly” because it is not Fernando’s fault the pitcher let the bases get loaded nor was it his fault that the pitcher threw a fastball down the middle of the plate, matt also says that it is an MLB players job to hit the ball and how it is an important goal for a player to hit a home run whenever they can. Matt then explains how players, analysts, and even the coach of the padres were upset about the grand slam but they should not be. I agree with Matt on this because you can not be mad at a player for scoring in this situation because regardless if he hit the ball or got walked a run would have come in and raised the score and the batter is not supposed to just stand there and let you strike him out just because his team is winning. Another rule he speaks about is a rule about not bunting during a no-hitter. A no-hitter is when a pitcher or pitchers have not given up a hit all game, now matt does not agree or disagree with this rule instead he speaks about it being situational saying “if a guy has a no-hitter and your down 7 you can’t bunt, but if you are a regular bunter and the scores within 1-4 runs then you can”. Matt explains how this is the only time it should be accepted but most players still frown upon it no matter what the score is. I agree with matt because earlier in the video he discussed another rule about bunting when up or down by a lot and he spoke about how a player should just not give up which is why I agree because 1-4 runs can easily be scored in a game at any moment and this has happened on several occasions during a baseball game, teams have come back from higher deficits so it is unfair to get mad at someone for not giving up and trying whatever tactic to win or get on base but if the lead is much higher than 4 it is disrespectful to try and mess up someone’s no-hitter with a bunt because it is not a respectable way to get a hit and you should just swing. The final rule that he brought up that I wanna discuss is the rule on not “pimping” a home run. pimping a home run is when a player flips their bat or showboats after hitting a home run. Matt speaks about how doing this can lead to retaliation from players causing a fight or getting hit by a pitch next at-bat or next game all because it is deemed to be disrespectful. Matt also explains how he does not like the rule because he feels like a player should be able to show excitement for his home run because again this is a goal for players and that it is not fair that a pitcher can showboat after striking someone out. I agree with Matt here because in recent years this so-called pimping has brought back excitement and personality to baseball and it has become popular with many younger fans and players.

                               Racism

The belief, which embraces superiority over other races by expressing violent and abusive behavior, quietly aberrates our society. Over time, racism has transformed from a blatant and overt form into a passive style of prejudice and discrimination It all has started long time ago, when skin color was taking over people’s faith. Enslaved people were viewed as objects to be purchased, sold, and abused rather than as people. Despite the fact that society of African origin — both free and enslaved — have been present in North America since the 1500s, the sale of the “20 and odd” Africans set the tone for what would become slavery in the United States. Brutality, degradation, and inhumanity were part of their lives as a slaver. They were spending almost the entire day, by working at cotton plantations at dreadful heat;enslaved people’s diets were either insufficient or scarcely adequate to satisfy the demands of their heavy workload. They lived in filthy conditions that exposed them to poor weather and disease. Their clothes and bedding were all very simple. Slaves who served as domestics did better in some situations, obtaining their masters’ discarded clothes or getting easy access to food stores. They were punished by whipping, executing, and murdering. Additionally, they  were often refused educational facilities, such as learning to read or write.

The United States, is federal republic and representative democracy, which claims being civil and equal to citizens, despite race, sex, gender, and orientation. Such structure provides the constitution, responsible for human rights protection. African-American people were denied educational opportunities and prohibited from any religious parties. The freedom of speech and expressing personal opinions are part of our fundamental rights; White supremacy was taking intense effort to violate them.

The first amendment can be considered as the first step of creating an equal union, as the way of gaining justice for all. Every citizen is obligated to vote and express their opinion for a better future, they can own property, choose their own religion and utilize other fundamental one. However, how far can all of these be achievable? How can white supremacy “allow” and admit the nonexistence of the racial authority even nowadays. Recent events, starkly demonstrated the unfortunate reality we all are facing, after terrible murder of George Floyd. He was victimized by the system we live in; As Dr. King believed, every citizen living in the same land must be supporting each other, because the name of the country tells us to “unite”. Such blind acts are taking place every single day in America, and we all are responsible to speak up for gaining justice. People supporting white supremacy, have been told to think so since their birth, the families which are responsible of child’s development, are teaching them hate language, which will grow over time. Racism creates many other enduring issues affecting a person’s mental health. For instance, so many children are bullied at school, just because some parents could not raise their child properly and teach the right lesson.Prejudice and hatred are learned behaviors. They are acquired habits that can be modified. Children pick up on prejudices from the people of their lives, as well as the newspapers, books, and their peers. At a young age, the process of countering negativity with positives starts. Children’s bias is not intensified when mentioning discrepancies.

In conclusion, humanity should evolute not only physically, but mentally as well. Time does not pass by for waste, we should educate and support each other in the ways of achieving the dream Dr. King had. The unity is full of justice, fairness and pursuit of happiness for all. There have been created many anti-racist organizaitons, such as : “black lives matter.”, “Campaign zero”, “Community movement builders”.. Etc. It is more critical than ever that we all stand in unity with one another during this global crisis. Human rights are a pledge taken by all nations around the world, including those in need. Children of all ethnic backgrounds, especially those who have been uprooted due to crime, conflict, or famine, need our assistance wherever they are. Every child has the right to be viewed with compassion and empathy, as well as to grow up in a stable and secure atmosphere.
