Final essay outline

Throughout this semester we have read many different short stories and books and had to see which of the five ethics fit with what character. And today I decided to do that with one of my favorite short stories, The Veldt by  Ray Bradbury. Within my essay, I will be discussing the actions of my chosen character and say what ethics I believe they follow. and with this introductory paragraph, I will give a very short inside to the story and why I chose that story

In the paragraph, I will state what ethic I believe matches up with that character’s action the first characters I will talk about are the parents, Lydia and George., Lydia stated that she believed something was wrong with the nursery. during the story, you can see that Lydia cares about her kids and wished the best for them, and want to be a part of raising them, but in the house that can cook clean feed and dress, etc she doesn’t have much to do in her day to day life, just as she stated in the story “I don’t know  I don’t know,” she said, blowing her nose, sitting down in a chair that immediately began to rock and comfort her. “Maybe I don’t have enough to do. Maybe I have time to think too much. Why don’t we shut the whole house off for a few days and take a vacation?” after this quote I believed that this action showed Lydia to follow the feminist ethics. The mother wasn’t the only one who cared about the kid. The father George Hadley also cared for the kids. While reading the story George’s actions led me to believe that he followed utilitarian ethics. I say this because when his wife point out that something is wrong with the nursery he made it his job to make sure everything was alright He made sure to call the psychologist. He understood what was happening was not right and tries his best to fix it and although he was going to take away something his kids loves he was thinking about the outcome and how that would benefit them. “it won’t hurt for the children to be locked out of it awhile. Too much of anything isn’t good for anyone. And it was clearly indicated that the children had been spending a little too much time in Africa. That sun.” he thinks about what would be better for them in the future.

In this paragraph, I will talk about the kids. Wendy and peter. As I read more into the story I believe that both wendy and peter are deontological. I believe this to be true because though locking their parents in the nursery which is where the veldt was wrong, the kids didn’t care that it was wrong they forced on the outcome. They believed that this was the cost to having the nursery and the house, they thought that they were doing this for a good reason  with they  and it was not like they needed their parents because  the house provided everything they needed

The next character I have to analyze is the psychologist David McClean. With this character, I was a bit confused with what etic he followed just because you don’t see much of him. I was able to come up with the fact that he follows the morals of virtue. I say this because Though he only shows up a couple of times he does show loyalty to this family and wisdom trying to help them and telling them what he knows or his opinion on what they should do.

The last character that is left is the house. I considered the house to be a character because the house practically acts as though it is a living person. I believe the house falls under global ethics. The reason I say this is because the house doesn’t really have a mind of its own. but the house has been programmed and created for the  family that  lives their life easier

Final Essay Dec 8, 2021

In this essay, I will explore the ethical decisions in the story “ Interpreter of Maladies “ by Jhumpa Lahiri, published in 1999 this story follows deontology ethics but not in the most straightforward way, it can also be said that later in the story the ethics/reasoning changes from Deontology to virtue ethics. Deontology ethics refers to an overall sense of duty or even obeying a set of rules that you swore to obey, virtue ethics on the other hand focuses on your own moral reasoning for doing anything from moral character, moral education, moral wisdom, friendship, and family relationships. Both of these ethics are important in Mr.Kapasi’s choice of career. In the “Interpreter of Maladies, “ the tour guide Mr.Kapasi leads Mr. and Ms. Das and family on a tour to the sun temple in Konarak, and along the way, Mr. Kapasi and Ms.Das have some alone time, and when they do the topic of conversation is Mr.Kapasi’s other job as an interpreter in a doctors office and as they unpack the reasoning behind his choices we are able to see how these ethics play a role in his decisions.

(THESIS 1):These three characters all interact with one another at one point in the story, however each their actions and decisions are driven by their own ethical principles. Next I’ll be breaking down how Megan, a sweet blonde and pretty American teenager who’s trying to get into the UK for all the wrong reasons, is shown and driven by her virtue ethics. Finally, I’ll be talking about the Iraqi general who’s actions according to global ethics cause him to break international law.

Shontelle Williams Final Essay Outline

Throughout this essay, we will be looking at “Say Hello, Wave Goodbye” written by Tony Parsons. I will also be discussing the type of ethics followed by the main character using “A Short Introduction to Five Types of Ethics”. The main character is Jaswinder “Jazz” Smith who seems to be following utilitarian ethics for a lot of her decision making. According to the Five Types of Ethics, “Utilitarianism is the view that the morally right action is the action that produces the most good … Utilitarians believe that the purpose of morality is to make life better by increasing the amount of good things in the world and decreasing the amount of bad things.” Jazz’s job is to scope out the bad/suspicious people then later on questions them further to figure out their intentions on visiting the UK. Jazz takes her job very seriously and she has been doing it for a long time. When she meets Megan who lies about her reasoning behind visiting the UK and Donald Harrison who believes there’s a microchip in his brain placed by President Obama, her ethics come into play and her decision making skills are put to the test.

Paragraph 2- Details on interaction between Jazz and Donald Harrison

Paragraph 3- Details on interaction between Jazz and Megan.

Conclusion- Describe how Jazz’s ethical codes affect her behavior and decision making.

Thomas Tracy’s Final Essay Outline

Story: Assimilation

Character: Ramon, Jelena, Leon, Borislav & Lawyer

Scenes:

Pg. 2: Ramon & Leon speak of the deal

(Can input Embodied globalization in this discussion)

Pg. 3: Ramon – virtuous and utilitarianism

Borislav – utilitarian – offers promotion, best deal for everyone.

Lawyer – Threatens Ramon, its Ramon’s response that needs to be discussed

Pg. 4: Ramon and Leon talking, Ramon says, “She is still my wife” Deontology? Does this infer a set of rules? Is this about virtue? Are the rules implied because Ramon is virtuous?

Pg. 5: Ramon walks Jelena home every night, virtuous character

Pg. 10: Jelena and Ramon at the beach, she asks “Ramon, would you like to hit me?” Is this the first time we get a glimpse of her thinking about who she is, what type of person she is and who she wants to be? This scene also highlights the man Ramon wants to be seen as. She is clearly aware of the plan, she says, “If not you then someone…But it is best if you hit me, Ramon.” Is it best because Ramon would not hit her like Alexander? Or because for the plan to be executed perfectly, Ramon hitting her would be best? But then she was crying, she asks for forgiveness, she is the worst of people…

Pg. 12: Ramon’s view of marriage regardless of why it came to be… “still a sacred bond…it is the same.”

Pg. 12: Leon… ever the utilitarian… “Let the war begin, he said.”

Coumba Diawara’s Essay Outline

Throughout this essay we will take a look into the short story “An Arranged Marriage” by Nell Freudenberger published in 2010 and evaluate the main character’s ethical decisions and behaviors while using “A Short Introduction to Five Types of Ethics”. The main types of ethics we discover throughout this story are deontology ethics, and virtue ethics. “A Short Introduction to Five Types of Ethics” describes to us that “deontology is one of those kinds of normative theories regarding which choices are required, forbidden, or permitted. In other words, deontology falls within the domain of rules that guide and assess our choices of what we ought to do. Any system that involves a clear set of rules is a form of deontology; it is often referred to as a rule-based ethic.” After reading this text we see that Amina’s mother strongly falls under this category because of how much she relies on Amina following specific rules and restrictions on marriage. “A Short Introduction to Five Types of Ethics” also tells us that, “what sort of person should I be? Virtue ethics focuses on ideas such as: the virtues themselves, motives and moral character, moral education, moral wisdom, friendship and family relationships, a deep concept of happiness, and the role of the emotions in our moral life.” Amina herself strongly falls under this category because we can see that throughout the text one of her main focuses is doing what her parents desire, on supporting her parents. Therefore, after acquiring useful information from both text it is certain that Amina’s mother is strict on her daughter following certain guidelines, while Amina is completely focused on her relationships not only with her parents but with George and supporting her parents.

Paragraph 2- Introducing Amina, Explaining her role in her parents life, relationship with George, and showing how falling under virtue ethics affects her decision making and behavior.

Paragraph 3- Introducing Amina’s mother, Explaining her relationship and role in Amina’s life, and showing how falling under deontology ethics affects her decision making and what she expects of Amina.

Paragraph 4-

Paragraph 5- Wrapping up the previous paragraphs, discussing how ethics can affect a person’s decision.
