Reflection 4 American Slavery and ‘the Relentless Unforeseen’

In the article American Slavery and ‘the Relentless Unforeseen’ by Sean Wilentz, it talks about slavery in the 1700s and 1800s, In the late 1740s and early 1750s, Western culture reached a turning point. producing what the great modern scholar of slavery and the antislavery movement, Slavery was a normal thing for white people at the time. Slavery lasted for almost a hundred years 1700-1800, which also made many people take slaves for granted. It seemed normal to use slave labor in the South at the time because the main economy in the south is cropping, the economy in the south would be weak without slaves, and mass production of crops would become a difficult task. The slavery plantation is run by the plantation owner to produce for the capitalist world market for the purpose of obtaining profits. This is its capitalist character. However, economically speaking, it is a slave economy, because it excludes the basis of capitalist production-freely hiring labor, and has the basic characteristics of a slave-occupied production method.slaves are the property of the plantation owner, without personal liberty; slaves are engaged in forced labor driven by direct violence, and slave owners deprive slave labor not only of surplus labor but also a considerable part of necessary labor.

People in the north say this is an immoral source of economicsSouth which believed that slavery was inhumane, opposed the expansion of slavery, and the South, which had always used slaves to develop industries, felt strongly against it. However, the North also became hostile to the monopolist of workers in the South, and the two sides began to conflict.

But whether it was because black people fought for freedom or northerners hated slavery, slavery was successfully abolished. Compared to Hannah Jones, Wilentz’s article is more in the description of what led to the occurrence of slavery and abolitionist.

Reflection #2 Sean

In the start of 2020 a new virus called coronavirus with unknown origin started in Wuhan China which then in the last months since it started it the virus is now considered a pandemic spreading the virus everywhere throughout worldwide. This resulted in unemployment rising which causes the stock market to crash and schools being shut down which includes us college students as we are now enrolled in a new teaching method called online classes to which in my opinion are the first time doing online classes from home to which I’m not used to. This way it prevents further virus spreading through social distance and proper hygiene but leads to become once known busy streets or attractions to become a ghost town and also to lead to massive amount of people to  buy and hoard the really good items such as rice, toilet paper, and hand sanitizers as well with face masks. Though there are news that shows how deadly the virus is showing how Italy has the highest deaths coming from the virus but in some cases young people seem to not care shown in some articles of young people getting it shows that “us” young people are not immune to this virus and that getting it would cause a lot of illness. It said that a vaccine is in the making on how to make it, test it on people, and to get FDA approval shows that the virus is going to take a long time for the vaccine to be approved for mass production. For now in this case all we can do is prevent further infecting other people, cleaning ourselves the best we can and if you do need to go outside only use a face mask to those who are coughing around you as well as wearing gloves. Remember to wash your hands if you can and don’t touch anywhere on your face.

Wilentz Reflection/Hannah Jones

Destiny DeSilva

Both Hannah Jones and Sean Wilentz articles set two different point about slavery in America. The article by Wilentz gives me an idea on what happened specifically during the years of 1700s, and 1800s of slavery. In his article he states that “the byproduct, as some accounts say, of impersonal, amoral economics forces, or the unintended outcome of white people’s selfish squabbles over policy and profits, or even as an accident.” Throughout the years white people had been nothing but selfless and heartless people to the minorities which made policies, profits or even laws worse for them. “By the mid-1700s, in the American colonies as well as in Britain and France, a significant number of reformers and intellectuals had come to regard American slavery as pure evil.” Abraham Lincoln was a person who did not want slavery to end. “Abraham’s Lincoln rendered as a white supermacist who, whatever in qualms about human bondage, supposedly had no interest in ending slavery”. Unlike Lincoln not wanting slavery to end, Thomas Jefferson was against slavery and he believed that all slaves were equal, however he did not take any actions to make a change and help the slaves. Point of views like these made America’s role, Life, Liberty, and Property, harder for the slaves and other people themselves.

In other words, Hannah Jones The 1619 Project is more of gaining independence. She describes how her father joined the Army so he can be treated equally. Turns out, he was treated the same way like everyone else and he served the country. She did not understand the point I’d represent American when America could not treat minorities equally. Both articles set different points of view on slavery. Slavery impacted America very different because how people were treated back then. Up to today’s society people are still treated unequally and being mistreated because of the color of their skin or their race. Thankfully it’s not as bad as the 1700 and 1800s. Slavery took a big role in everyone’s life in my opinion and everybody had their own viewpoint on slavery

Coronavirus Crisis

As of right now , the world is dealing with a deadly virus known by everyone as the coronavirus or COVID-19. It has deeply impacted the world as we get to see how many countries have gone into lockdown or have taken action in order to stop the spread of this virus. We can see people starting to panic buy and immediately emptying the isles of many supermarkets in order to be stocked just in case of a home quarantine bound to happen at any given moment. The way I am dealing with this is just by staying at home and not leaving at all that is unless my mom or aunt want to go buy products at the supermarket so we could be ready for the quarantine. I am sanitizing myself everytime or even washing my hands as advised by everyone. I can see how it has impacted my family living in the house because of their jobs. Recently, my aunt’s job has been closed for two weeks. My mother’s job has been closed for two weeks as well and my uncle who works in a restaurant doesn’t experience a busy day anymore due the restaurant only has the option to deliver or pick up. My cousin no longer has school but his school is taking the similar action of most colleges right now and that is trying to work with online classes. I am very confused as to why people are buying toilet papers, I have seen people literally fight over toilet papers and yet I have not seen a logical reason behind this. Right now I am getting all my news from social media and my family that live with me since they watch the news a lot. The thing that has shocked me was that Italy has tallied more than 793 deaths in just one day and this has happened recently and this record is more than their previous tally which was roughly about 400 deaths in one day.

Reading the article based on the coronavirus was all new information to me. I found out that the coronavirus is part of a family of 6 other common viruses and this is the first to have an immediate impact on humans. I found an interesting fact in the article which was the fact that people would have had this virus before it even became a big problem. The journalist explains how it would have been difficult to detect due to having a lack of surveillance on the coronavirus. I also found out that this virus is known to emerge around the winter time just like the flu or even influenza. Besides this, this type of virus needs a body in order to thrive because in the article it states how it can be easily killed off if it were to be in cardboard, steel or plastic.

American Slavery and ‘the Relentless Unforeseen’ Reflection

After reading American Slavery and ‘the Relentless Unforeseen’ by Sean Wilentz, I get to see how the ideal of slavery was portrayed throughout the world. We almost get to see a chronological timeline of how slavery started and the begining of this ideal presented in the essay would be the Portuguese arriving to the new world. Besides this, the essay also talks about the first plantation which was located in Chesapeake, one of the first settlements in the New World. Reading this essay makes me relate to the 1619 project by Hannah Jones and the fact checking article on the 1619 project because it helps contradict the fact that the colonies wanted their independence to preserve slavery. I get to read two views of what people think based on slavery and America and they easily contradict each other. The Article by Wilentz gives me better understanding of what was happening with this topic of slavery in the 1600s, 1700s and 1800s. I agree with the claim Wilentz has portrayed in his essay which is “Yet it is too often at best consigned to the inevitable, as something that was bound to happen as if in the natural unfolding of progress” because I do feel as if slavery was bound to happen due to the greed and power and superiority that fueled many of the countries to dominate and destroy anything in their paths. This ideal also contributes to the topic of the Civil war because we can see that this was bound to happen due to the influence of the American revolution. In the American Revolution we have two sides, the British and the colonies, and they both believe to be right in which contradict both their ideals. Eventually a war happens and the colonies emerge victorious and this influenced the Civil war because we can see that the Southerners believed slavery was their right and it shouldn’t be abolished while the North beleived that slavery would put an end to what was known as their Union and would seperate the country. The Civil War was inevitable due to many of the ideals that have been presented before the war itself and due to many of the tensions that have arisen during that time period.

The essay also bring up a great point and it deals with many people that were opposed to slavery such as Thomas Jefferson. The essay expresses how Jefferson was against slavery and believed that the slaves were equal yet he did not do anyting in his power to stop this. We also get to see how Abraham Lincoln wasn’t too fond about ending slavery, his main goal was to stop the South from seperating which would break up their nation. In this ideal we see how people can have their viewpoints about slavery but yet their actions and endgame don’t display it as much. The essay includes how eventually there is some sort of action taken in order to contradict slavery and we see an example of this through the Society for the Relief of Free Negroes Unlawfully Held in Bondage which were a group determined to abololish slavery.

Novel Corona Virus

One of the strongest and most damaging viruses of all time is taking root with almost everyone. This pandemic has affected many jobs and schools across the United States. But how much more time will pass to get out of this big problem. This problem depends on all of us since many people have not been paying attention to the precautions and the adequate quarantine that we must have. This virus has been so deadly that in many countries it presents so many cases that they do not have enough space for all the saddest and what I have known so far is that in those countries like Italy they have to decide who will die, in order to leave the others people who “really need”. But the problem is that people do not take seriously this big problem. Many people keep dating, you do not take the necessary precautions, they think it is a joke, and this is not true, and you must be aware that we must take care of ourselves and others. In many countries the borders have been closed but what about people who are in other countries as they will return to see their families who plow in that strange country. Everyone has been affected the jobs. But my question is that no one has spoken, who will give them money for rent or food for those people who live daily or for those who keep their families at a distance. One of the things I did not know is that SARS-CoV-2 survives no more than a day in cardboard and approximately two or three days in steel and plastic. Many people are also unconscious and reuse plastic gloves do not throw them away after using them. It is something that everyone should take into account and take strict measures.

An excellent article on Novel Corona Virus 19 for 10am class

For those of you interested in the ongoing health crisis, it’s absolutely necessary to understand the biology of the virus.

Feel free to comment and reflect, perhaps on language that clarifies and states precisely the nature of a virus.  What you knew and didn’t know and how clear language helps us understand scientific information.

Note this article was not written by a scientist, but by a journalist who writes about science.  You could reflect on the genre of science writing/journalism as a reader and as a writer.  Notice that this information would be very difficult to communicate in slang.

Hannah Jones Reflection

Hannah Jones 1619

Destiny DeSilva

For many many years African American were in search of freedom for decades. It was really hard for them as human beings because they were treated as animals and most especially slaves, as they were called. They were in search of a new life, something new, something different, a life with no worries, less beatens, no one controlling them or telling them what to do. They were looking for their rights, the ones they deserve. In the article The 1619 Project, Hannah Jones has made some key point during her fathers time of slavery. Her father thought that joining the military would he would finally be treated as a human being and an American, however he thought wrong. Although he has his benefits as a person who served the country he still treated as if he had no purpose being there. “He would be discouraged under murky circumstances and then labor in a series of service jobs for the rest of his life.” Hannah’s father believed in hard work no matter what the circumstances are, but she did not understand by representing something where you don’t feel welcomed? Where you’re treated as a human and not as a property, representing something or a place where you don’t feel safe or comfortable. To Hannah the flag was nothing but disappointment. African Americans were being sold to the white people, their children were not legally their own and they were also up for auction. Black women being raped by their own masters and no would receive no do seques whatsoever. On July 4, 1776 the Declaration of Independence “proclaims that “all men are created equal” and “endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights.” ” Once it was signed white men did not like the idea of “all men are equal” especially for the hundred and thousands of slaves in “their midst.” The Declaration of Independence and The Constitution played a very big role in the slaves. They would fight for their rights no matter what the cost is but due to laws and the Constitution their effort to the white people was worthless.

In my opinion, African American did not deserve what they got from the white people. All they ever wanted was to live a normal life like the others and have their rights as humans and as citizens. White people took the advantage of their worth, which was low, and used them for their own purposes, treated them like animals, used them as property of their own, and sold them like objects. It is really upsetting to read these types of articles because people did not have a kind heart and think about these people as one of them. No matter the skin color, no matter the race or ethnicity, they are like everyone else. We all have our difference, but we are still people at the end of the day
