For this week’s OpenLab assignment, you will be submitting a group post. That is, you will work as a group and one of your group members (the “secretary”) will submit a single post for the whole group.

The study groups have been rearranged a tiny bit and the list has been moved to its own page. Groups may change again during the semester.

Instructions

Summary

Each group has been assigned one problem. The problem is in a shared Google doc; the link to the Google doc will be emailed to groups shortly. Groups will meet in Blackboard Collaborate Ultra. The Google doc is where the group will work on their solution to the problem collaboratively. The secretary will then post the group’s final solution on the OpenLab.

Step 1: elect a secretary

Volunteer to be the person who will post your group’s work on the OpenLab! If more than one person volunteers, the group will elect a secretary. Write your secretary’s name in the appropriate place in the Google doc.

Step 2: solve the problem

Everyone in the group must make at least one attempt at solving the problem. Your work doesn’t have to be 100% correct; this is just a starting point! Take a picture of your draft and upload it to the Google doc (don’t forget to include your name so your group knows whose work it is).

Step 3: collaborate

This is a space for you to write your notes and your drafts and to discuss different approaches to the solution. The Google doc does not need to be neat or organized! Comment on your group-mates’ solutions in the Google doc. Do you have a question about a particular step? Do you see something in their solution that is clearer than in yours?

Step 4: meet

by Thursday, September 24

Over email, arrange a time to meet in your group’s Blackboard Collaborate Ultra session to go over different group-mates’ solutions, comments, and notes in the Google doc. Decide what should be in your final draft.

Suggestion: Meet in your BCU session at 10am on Thursday, September 24. Some group members may have to pop out for 10 minutes if they have their HOT topic presentation at that time.

Step 5: write a final draft

Your group’s solution may have gone through several drafts by this point. As a group in the Google doc, write a final solution that the whole class will be able to read. Decide what part of the group’s OpenLab post will be typed and what part will be a photo.

Step 6: submit the group OpenLab post

The secretary is now ready to post the group’s work on the OpenLab!

  1. Title the post “Week 4 Group n post” (where n is your group’s number).
  2. Select the category “Week 4 group post” before publishing your post.
  3. Don’t forget to include all group members’ names!

Everyone who participates will receive participation credit.

Tip: Don’t forget that you can go to tutoring for help with this assignment. You can attend the Math Department’s drop-in tutoring on Zoom as a group.
