This is a question I got on webwork and went to office hours for.

“Give an equation for the result of shifting the graph of x^2+y^2=4 down by 5 units, and left by 9 units.”

Due to the shape of this graph being a circle you have to operate on both the x and y variables. You also have to do the translations by axis.

Since the Y axis controls up and down, you have to move it accordingly, and you have to do the same to the X axis except it controls how far left or right the graph is.

You don’t do anything to the radius (which in this case is 4) unless told to because that changes the size.

To solve the equation:

(X)^2+(Y)^2=4

moved down by 5- (X)^2+(Y+5)^2=4

moved to the left by 9- (X+9)^2+(Y+5)^2=4

(X+9)^2+(Y+5)^2=4 is the final answer.
