In our English class, we have defined the concept of a “discourse community” as a social group that communicates, in part, using written texts, but also shares common goals, values, writing standards, specialized vocabulary, and specialized genres. As we discussed in class discourse communities can be being on a sports team, being a member of a club, even where you work is also a type of discourse community. So for the discourse community map I have chosen a discourse community I have been in or that I am still in. As my discourse community I chose the most common one for me which is facebook because it is part of my everyday life.

Facebook is an online community in which you can communicate with friends and meet new people. To be a member on Facebook, first you have to make an account which is very simple, all you have to do is put your name, date of birth, gender, and email address. Once you make your account you can start looking for your friends and add them to your friend’s list, by doing this you will be able to comment their status and pictures and you will also be able to write on their walls. You can do many more things on Facebook besides that, you can add pictures and tag your friends, you can play games and compete against your friends, you can be invited to different events that are going on by your friends, and you can also send your friends bumper stickers and other funky things that you can post on their profile. I think Facebook is a very fun way to communicate not only with friends but also with family. It’s an online community that doesn’t have a formal way of writing because you can write how and whatever you want, you can write in English, Spanish, French, German or in any language you want.

The main goal of Facebook is fast and easy communication with friends and family. When I need to ask for example my cousin a question about anything I just write on his wall on facebook since he lives quite far I don’t see him often. Also, if you want to see interesting videos, gossip or anything similar, facebook has it all. Some of the typical genres would be all the comments people leave on walls, photos, videos or activities. You could also send a private message if you don’t want the whole world to see what you write. The norms for genres, however, are that no pornography is allowed as images or video, nor any copyright material. On Facebook, we also use a special language,we use abbreviations and smiley faces, not something that you would put on a well written report for example. Facebook is best for finding old friends. When a friend goes away to another place, we often do not get a chance to communicate with him or her. Now, thanks to Facebook, we are able to find and re-connect with our old ex-classmates, schoolmates, former teachers, college friends etc. We can share our feelings and what is happening in and around our daily life through facebook. We can also get feedback from our friends. It is the best medium to share your thoughts and feelings with others.

So Facebook was the discourse community I have been in or I am still in. It involves online communication. Over all I think it`s a discourse community that I like because it allows me to communicate, share and learn different things that may make me a better person and which in general are part of me.

YCteen Discourse Community

During my years in high school, I have realized that I’m stronger in literature than any of my other classes. For example, my general courses. Some were, Public Speaking, Black Theater and English 1120 which consisted of us students researching and writing under a given topic, which I deeply found a passion for, leading me to writing for YCteen’s. YCteen’s is a magazine company that I discovered through my high school. This company was looking for writers, willing to write personal stories about the struggles of teens. I was very intrigued and decided to apply and well long story short, I got the opportunity to be a writer for this magazine. This discourse community is teen magazine writers. My initial assumptions of the group was that they were all intellectual young writers and that they were going to have more impressive stories that would overtake mine. My intentional interaction of their content, I was impressed by their stories and for most of them their ways of telling or portraying their stories.
To begin, our whole goal and premise is to write stories based on teens experience. Their goal is to let teens voice their problems that matter or are relevant to them. They want to project their voice to show the indifference there is and how deep teen issues are. They want to change the media’s perception and let teen voices be normalized in the media. It’s a way where similar ground can be reached and where many similarities in personal experience can be shared and be beneficial/helpful to many teens, who may have gone through in their life. The struggles they face as being young individuals. They want to share and publish young writers so they can be experienced and be involucrated to the writing world. Since I’m very new to this group, I am yet to become close to other writers but I’ve communicated with a few people around the office (editors and the different people from the other departments of the magazine) and they all have the same perspective, similar ideas. Holly, a Senior Editorial Director for teens and as well as my current editor said, “they want to give young writers the opportunity to publish their stories”. The ways they communicate or share ideas is by meetings or reunions with editors/staff members. If an editor wants to meet and discuss the writing or content of a writer then those are other meetings or a get along with the editor, to discuss their project. There can also be lessons that are given so that coversatation can be sparked about a student writing with other writers present. For example, if I wanted to converse with my editor on introducing a new idea, we would sit together either by their computer or mine and I would share my ideas going back and forth with them and corroborate or discuss an idea or a topic for a new story to work on.

Since, they publish stories and let teens voice their opinions and stories, that’s how they communicate to the outside world. They share their opinions and create content to different audiences to inform them and shed light on different experiences. The “language” differs in certain situations, we communicate using more slang or easier vernacular, but as we write things for the magazine we tend to use better vocabulary and use sensory writing. Proceeding, I’m a very new writer and when it comes to writing it’s something I love to do but I want to learn how to improve. Being in this discourse community is a learning experience where we learn from our mistakes, which is one of the things one would learn or should know before joining. From partaking in this magazine, I’ve learned that it is most personal, memoir writing. One would have to know or experience something and be open and willing to talk about it because if not then your content would not be interesting or even useful. Something I also learned while being in this discourse community is that not everyone is professional and sophisticated. After being in this discourse group, I learned that some of the writers are not up to pair with their writing skills. Most of the writers that come in for the magazine are not experienced writers and are most times not really good at it. Something that is vital before joining is that the writing tends to be personal experience and they don’t use creative or informative writing, more memoir writing. So, if one is poetic and is more driven to figurative writing, joining this teen magazine writing group will not suit you.

A full member of the group is considered one who is constantly writing and a quick worker when it comes to responding to your editor’s notes and questions. Since we all come together to one place we discuss and try to form our stories from there. A full member to me is one who is constantly thinking about their writing and new additions to their story. Conflicts may arise when there can be a disagreement in what the editors may want to add to the story, the writer who has the story or content most times will have to go along with the editor and trust them with their writing. Since the editor is the one who knows best for the writer and creates a good way of informing the reader or audience.

To conclude, after being in this group and writing about this discourse community I have realized and understand the concept the and can discuss more about this discourse community. Something that I learned or was shocked about learning was how good the system is for setting up the writers. I am also glad to know that there is a magazine which gives this opportunity for interested writers to improve their writing skills. This discourse community has been very eye opening and beneficial to me.

Discourse community Of Mariame

The discourse community I belong to is hospitality management. Hospitality is simply the act of welcoming guests to a restaurant, hotel etc and catering to their needs. The major responsibility is to make sure guests have a pleasant experience while they are in the place of business you work in. Hospitality management is considered a discourse community because although there’s a hotel crew, restaurant crew, bakery crew and event planning crew the common goal is to make it the best experience for a customer. Before getting into this major I thought it was all about either cooking or baking. I also thought it would be easy choosing a career path but because there so much it’s difficult.I am interested in management or event planning.I like being in charge I like telling people what to do and I believe I am very reasonable. When your event planning you need to take the customers ideas and make it come to life. So you are not really in charge because you are going based on the wants and needs of a certain customer.

I conducted research within this group to make sure I fully understood it. I spoke to Jacqlien G. And she told me about the different jobs that branches off from this major. After getting my bachelors degree in hospitality management I could possibly become a H.R for a hotel or restaurant. She also advised me to take 1101 classes for hospitality to test it out and see if this is something I am really interested in.While I was taking public speaking I met Jenny who was in the hospitality major. She told me that from what she knew about me I would like the major we became closer and she would tell me what she learned and what path she chose. She wants to become a chef and she explained that before she got into the major she had no idea on what she wanted to be so she tested it out and she loves it. I am in a similar problem .Prof.Goolad who taught me about the history of hospitality. Hospitality originated from foreigners coming to new lands and being taken care of by the natives of the land. They would show the foreigners around, they would feed them that’s where the hotel concept came from.In the process of interviewing I learned that in this major you are able to take a trip to disney and further your hospitality skills. You can work in the hotel to learn more about the business and what skills you need to work on to be as success as you can be.Or you can work as a chef cook meals for people and learn more about the french cuisine which is one of the famous cuisines. Also working there you will see how all the different people in different positions work together .So you will be getting an inside view of the hospitality industry as a whole until you choose an area of focus. What brings hospitality together is diversity. Diversity in the workplace increases productivity and communication with different people.Diversity doesn’t only have to mean working with other races but also working with business people or people who come to the hotel or restaurant with family. You need to learn how to make everyone feel comfortable. You would need to figure out how to make the environment less noisy for the business person and how to make it fun for the kids. I Learned that during the french revolution french chefs who” lost their mind” migrated to New Orleans which mixed the French and African American cuisine. The fact that they mixed together is what caused Louisiana to be known for its amazing restaurants. I always wanted to go to louisiana because i know their known for the food they have there but i never knew about the history of the cuisine. The hospitality community is unique because it relies on voluntary income and free time. Also it requires active thinking and coming up with new ways to please guests. You will never be bored. You will always have something to do because there’s different people coming in everyday.Different people with different personalities. In the hospitality community knowing your brand is important you need to know what you do and dont stand for. Also you need to put customers first. They are the main factor of business. In the hospitality industry they value communication. You need to communicate with customers with co workers etc. To get into the hospitality industry you can either go to college and take the major or you can apply for jobs such as a cook or even a dishwasher to get a start into the industry. Maybe after the job you want to further your career and understanding of the industry so you can go back to school and get a degree. The process is pretty formal. Members communicate with each other through social media, emails, text, etc. I haven’t learned about the specific way they communicate yet if there even is one.

In conclusion I didn’t really learn much from this project. But since this is my first semester in the hospitality major I am constantly learning new things.I learn more about the history of hospitality. It is very interesting to be a part of this discourse group.Being in this community I noticed that most people are self taught. They didn’t go to a high school that taught them how to cook or bake. They learned how to do it from practicing for their family. I also have been hearing different stories on why people choose to join the major.

Being a part of a discourse community was an integral part of my personality. I’ve been a part of a lot of discourse communities but, the most significant community I was a part of was my soccer team, called Buenavista. At first, my definition of a discourse community was the complete opposite of the actual definition. I thought it consisted of an unorganized group of people, but an actual definition is a group of people that have a similar goal to achieve. My initial assumption of Buenavista was that it was a soccer club full of talented people, who were better at playing soccer, compared to me. I expected nothing much from me and thought I would never reach their level of technique and skill. Also, I thought that I was incapable of competing for my position in my team and for other teams because there were seven people competing for the same spot to play for Buenavista. I never thought I’d be given a chance, plus I didn’t get a lot of attention from the coach which didn’t help me improve as a player. The other players talked and were connected in a brotherly fashion, a brotherhood club. Initially, I did not fit in and the other soccer teammates were not welcoming, but afterwards, we all learned to communicate and work as a team together.

Buenavista is a club that is welcoming to anyone, but you’ve got to put in the work to improve and play soccer. The group communicates through tough love, by being harsh with each other. For example, if you don’t play well, you will be given rough treatment for “slacking”, but if you play amazing you’ll get praised. We took our games/training seriously, but we also knew how to have fun. The coach had his favorite players and they were usually the ones who had great technique and worked the hardest. I’ve interviewed former teammates of Buenavista and myself about their different views of Buenavista, while we were playing as a team. We had a similar perspective of the team’s goal, that is, learning the proper way to play in a game with certain conditions and still win. We mainly communicated verbally or through our performance in the field, but I wasn’t really socializing with my teammates because I felt as if I was getting distracted and it would affect how I was learning and receiving new knowledge. When I do talk

Castillo 2

with my teammates I ask how I can improve to fix my or someone else’s flaws part of my/someone in game. In addition, my teammates only communicated with the outside world by playing with other teams in our league. Finally, before a person wants to join Buenavista they

need to know how to understand English and Spanish. The club is primarily Latinos and we code switch between though the two languages and don’t take it too seriously. You can’t be lazy when it comes to training to learn something new or improve your communication. Most people in the club knew each other because they were previous players of the club or we played against their team before. Some of them knew each other since they were around 5 or 6. They were a part of the club for over 10 years.

I would like to talk about my experience being a part of the Discourse Community. Buenavista was a huge part of my life. I saw them as my family making me love them in and outside of the field. Sometimes I was overwhelmed with other things that I have to do, but I always managed to go to practice or Sunday games to play with them cause they made me feel relieved. We’re a really good team and I was a great player, but I didn’t go because I wanted to play soccer, I wanted to play soccer with Buenavista. I’ll put my body on the line just to win a game just to see everybody end the game with a smile that warms my heart. I’ll say that Buenavista made me the person you look at today. Even though I had a rough start with the club, nobody wanted to play with me and talk to me cause I was bad, things changed and I earned their respect through showing them that I want to improve and I would be an integral part of the team. It took me a long time almost 2 years. I finally earned their respect cause I was probably top 3 in the defense for Buenavista. Through that experience, I’ve got to earn people respect it’s not given. I wanted to quit so many times, but I saw improvements show of myself and some of the players who talked to me and the coach took some of his time to train me alone. I didn’t want to waste the time they put in me. They made a tuff cookie out of me. They wanted to win the game which is why I gave them that, even my body was going through a lot of pain, but still I loved hearing my coach and teammate that I’ve seen who were too good to play with. Now I’m playing next to those who I thought were better and who I admired to play with. Hearing them

Castillo 3

scream “Jason you can do it” “Jason keep running” “Jason you got this” “Wow Jason” “How did you do that Jason?!”. Being a part of this Discourse Community makes us understand each other. I would assist them to receive a win, which fulfilled me since I’ve always wanted to be on their team. Being in the soccer team, Buenavista has shaped me into who I am now.

In conclusion, being involved in a Discourse Community like Buenavista has surprised me because I always thought that my other teammates would never see me as a member in the team. I was confused about why there were a lot of people who joined the team for 2 weeks then left, never seeing them again. I always wondered why people even bothered to join even if they were going to leave no matter what. At first, I didn’t like the idea of being in this team because I needed to do something active, but during my last years of Buenavista, I loved it. I don’t regret joining my soccer team, Buenavista, my favorite discourse community.

Discourse Communities Christina Cantone

A discourse community is a group of people who share like minded thoughts and ideas. We are part of so many types of these communities in our everyday lives. For example your major is a community, a group of friends can be a community, even a club could be a community. This is due to the fact that we talk a certain way within each setting like when we use specialized vocabulary with one group that wouldn’t be used in an everyday type conversion. One commintie I am apart of is what I am currently majoring in which is hospitality management. When I was choosing a major I thought to myself “is this something you can really do for the rest of your life”? In the hospitality field we use specific vocabulary that relates to our community. We have clear-cut goals that relate to what we are taught in our classes. These goals include but are not limited to providing and demonstrating impeccable customer service skills, to improve the efficiency and quality of hospitality and ensure guest satisfaction. As a whole the hospitality industry engages in discourse that encourages growth among members, provides respect when talking to guests and co-workers which creates a sense of professionalism in the work environment , as well as win favor with the guest through outstanding customer interaction.

In the hospitality industry we are very family-like, we always strive to be positive and productive in our work both outside and academics as well as in our everyday lives. When in the work world when we need someone to take a shift off our hands we ask “can you cover my shift?” or if they are having trouble with the sechuble and a manager may ask “how can I accommodate your need to fit in the schedule?”. There is a saying that you treat others the way you want to be treated and this holds very true in the real world and within the hospitality community. We each create an environment through word and actions for our co-workers, group members, and/or fellow students to flourish, thrive, and succeed in.

We as people like to be respected when we interact with others no matter the situation. No matter if you are a worker or a guest we strive as people of this community to create a sense of respect and professionalism in our academic and work environment. In the major you learn how to be in almost every role from being a chef, a sver, a mangere, the front of the house who interact with people, to the back of the house that does more heavy lifting. Each position requires a unique set of skills to execute correctly, even when we mess up it’s about how we correct and learn from our mistakes to improve our future.

Like everything in life it takes hard work, dedication, and discipline to achieve our goals and to participate in a industry of service. Even the most basic levels in the industry have some form of human interaction, so we always try to improve our customer service skills. Some of these skills are actively communicating with coworkers and peers, being able to solve problems, and working as a team. Our profession is no easy one, but when you have a whole community to interact with it makes life just a bit easier.

The person I interviewed was a peer from my major when asked the question what are the goals of the group they respond with “the goals of our department are to educate us about the field while getting experience through workshops and club activities, they want to prepare us for the real world. Even though it is one major there are so many paths that you can choose from one can be similar or drastically different from others, there’s no cookie cutter molde to follow when creating our academic experience”. I found this to be very true that we each have our own path and we interact with others while on the way to our destinations. The following question asked about how our group communicates with its members. She said “ we have a language all our own, it’s unique to us and our department. If we used this language anywhere else people wouldn’t know what we are referring to” she then goes on to say “we also use a lot of modern technologies like email, text messages, and social media”. There is a very valid point being made about the use of modern technologies and mass media in community, since many times things we do are now online. The last and final question asked was about what would you need to know before joining the group. She explained “you need to be able to work with others, have empathy for others, but one of the most important things to have is to be determined and work hard. These few things will get you very far in the community and the industry you choose to work in once you graduate”. The ideas she expressed hold true not just for our community but in life.

I have found that this community that I am part of this small yet mighty. We may not have as many members as some of the other majors, but the things we learn and do really make a difference. The values we learn don’t just necessarily have to be work or acadmicrealted but they can also be applied in our personal lives. In conclusion I have learned more about my major though the point of view of one of my peers and the experience and discore of our community was enlightening.

“Hypebeast” Discourse community

Anthony Allman

ENG

2-18-20

As generations go on, fashion starts to change. Today modern fashion has given birth to a term called “hypebeast” At first it was nothing but small indie companies getting artists to endorse their products, which made companies “Supreme, BAPE, Palace, etc” become bigger. Now, people like ourselves buy them because we see our favorite artist wearing them. Since then the term “hypebeast” has sprung up in popularity and become a common term used among the youth in society. However, a few questions that have been brought up are, “what is really a hypebeast? How do you become one? And ultimately what is the goal?”

To start off, a “Hypebeast” is someone, mainly males, who wear clothes that are in style (streetwear.) Although it is mainly meant for men, women have started to wear it too. While researching the term “resale” has come up often. Companies such as Supreme, Nike etc. come out with products that could be originally in the range of $40-$170, but the catch is that it may never come back and it is hard to get your hands on, which made people start to resell them, but at a much higher rate. Which made these clothing brands much bigger in our generation, because people earn profit and it can be done from the comfort of your home. It has become so intense that people have bought bots which can checkout an item without you doing anything and it is almost guaranteed you will get the product so you can make $400+ on an item that did not cost nearly that much. It may sound easy, but it’s not due to the high volume of people on the site trying to go for the same item that will cost the most. Being a hypebeast or so much as becoming one is not easy.

To become a hypebeast you will have to know a few things. One, when do these brands drop their latest pieces and at what time. Two, what is the best and most efficient way to “secure the bag” and lastly, how to style them or resell them. Usually a brand like Supreme and Palace have a Fall/Spring collection where they drop new items a specific day each week at a certain time. For example, Supreme drops various items at 11am on Thursdays every Fall, then they stop till Spring comes along. The catch however, is that not every piece they drop will go for a high price. Usually an artist will endorse a product which has yet to be released or there will be a product that has been talked about amongst society on social media that is set to come out soon which will be the most wanted item, which makes it that much harder to get because everyone will be going for it. The most stressful part everyone said was that the website always crashes and loses internet connection because of how much traffic is on the site, which leads to you losing out on an opportunity to look trendy, or on profit. It is hard to stay on track of what is up next and how to achieve the end goal.

I became hooked on reselling items after I resold my first Supreme t-shirt and saw how much money I could make on it. My first ever sale was a supreme hoodie and beanie and I sold the hoodie for $600 dollars and I only paid $150 for the hoodie. The beanie was $30 and I sold it for $100. That’s when I realized that this is something I could do full time. I then saved the money I earned for the next season of 2020 spring/summer season. Over the Christmas holiday I made over a thousand dollars off of a total of 4 clothes items. When I saw how many certain items were selling online I wanted to buy more. I will only buy hyped items, so I read comments and polls on Twitter and or Instagram to find the popularity of a certain product. Sometimes items will “Flop” (an item that doesn’t resell for much more than retail), so sometimes we take a loss. To help increase my chances of success, I will list the same items on multiple resale platforms. Sometimes I will ask friends to buy stuff for me. I will also seek out products from labels such as Nike, Adidas to try and get a quick “Flip” and make money when hyped items are not coming out.

The ultimate goal is to have the best pieces that no one can get their hands on and to look or follow the look of your favorite artist that would make you stand out from people who don’t wear such clothing items. The way every hypebeast communicates is through social media and following trends from artists, from different brands and to see what everyone is talking about. At the end of it all, you will have to be able to know what’s next, know what will sell, and know how to even get your hands on a product before someone else. A game plan on how to get the piece you want is necessary, which is where the “bot” comes in. Without it, you only have yourself to rely on. With a bot, it can help you checkout in a millisecond. The ultimate hypebeast will have some sort of game plan that will most of the time contain something along the lines of that.

Conclusively, some takeaways are that becoming a hypebeast is not as easy as just buying clothes and putting an outfit together, second, you can make money off of it, and third if done right you can be creative and impress those around you. It’s more of a lifestyle than a trend. It is shown that once you are in this type of group it is hard to stop, but ultimately can help you by making money and not just spending it. It’s an investment at the end of the day that our generation has put together because we took something small and ran with it.

Unit 1: Discourse Community Analysis

A discourse community at City Tech that I’m a part of is a remote sensing lab course with three other students in my major. My major is electrical engineering technology and telecommunications and we became a group at the start of the fall 2019 semester working on a circuit design for the CRSP (Cuny Research Scholars Program) conducting undergraduate research of wireless sensor networks with our mentor and the chairperson of the department Prof Wei. When Prof. Wei was advising me for my classes in fall 2018, we discussed how the experiments would be conducted. I initially assumed that we would each type our own individual lab reports and submit to Prof Wei but instead we had to create a google docs and collaborate each other’s individual research and results. Our goal was to research the five different types of wireless sensor networks and their applications in which we would use the knowledge from our electrical drafting course with the autocad computer aided design program to design the components for our project. After the designing phase, my group tested each component in the lab experiment and created written reports of our analysis to give to our mentor and create a formal presentation with a poster to submit to the CRSP. The characteristics that make our undergraduate research group a discourse community are our common goals to learn modern electronics outside of our classes and receive intern opportunities from the department upon completion of the program such as MTA or Con Edison.

Since I am a member of this discourse community, I researched this group through observation during our weekly sessions in the lab. Our methods of communication in the group are texting and email on our google accounts. We primarily use our google accounts because of the lab reports that we complete on google docs allowing us to collaborate our ideas, share lab results, and edit any sections of the lab report completed by other members. In the group texts, we discuss the next steps for our project and designate roles based on each other’s skillset. Prof Wei is the leader of our group and he texts us our roles such as “Ronald will create the model of the network using Autocad, share the model on google docs so Matthew can test the circuit in Multisim for proficiency and we’ll meet on Wednesday to conduct the experiment with the components in the lab”(Wei). The way that we communicate makes us unique because our mentor allows us to discuss our individual ideas to improve the project instead of only the mentor telling us what the next phase is and how to do it. This community value each member’s ideas and any obstacles we encounter such as a component of the network being damaged due to excess heat generated in the circuit or the circuit consuming high amounts of voltage, we are able to troubleshoot as a team to fix/improve our project.

In order to become a member of this group, you must have completed the six first-year EET courses in the major with a GPA of 2.8 or better and have at least 40 hours completed in both electric machines theory and digital electronics laboratories. A person interested in joining this group would need to know about the three main computer aided design programs (Matlab, Multisim, and Autocad) and be proficient with at least one of these programs in order to complete each stage of the project. A person would also be expected to have already learned about the different components from the lectures in the six first-year courses to understand the experiments in the remote sensing laboratory.

During my interview with two of the group members, I learned new things about them that I didn’t know when I was working with them for nine months. One of the members Dominic was two semesters away from completing his bachelor’s degree and his mother went to Pace University studying in business administration but she was unable to finish because of the high tuition costs. Dominic told me his mother’s experience in college and his future goals because he wanted to make his mother proud that he may not have been the first one to go to college but he will be the first one in his family to finish with a degree. Another one of the members that I interviewed was Ethan Brown and he told me that his father owns an architecture firm in Manhattan. Ethan wanted to become an electrical engineer because he saw how the technicians were installing the electrical systems based on the blueprints of the architects floor planning design for a new building. Learning about their stories and experiences that developed their interest in electrical engineering surprised me and helped me understand how our goals in this major connects us as one community.
