Uses of Ozone Gas in Dentistry

An oral presentation was done at the Wellness Health Fair the CityTech. Topics of interested of the general public were presented to educate people about commonly used products. Me and two of my classmates decided to talk about a topic that has been known to have great properties in the medical/health field for many years, proved to be effective but not commonly used, especially here in United Stated.

Ozone is a triatomic molecule, consisting of three oxygen atoms (O3). It is an energy-rich and highly unstable form of oxygen. Commonly known for it’s natural presence in the upper layer of the atmosphere. It is one of the most important gases in the atmosphere because of its ability to filter ultraviolet (UV) rays, which are crucial for the biological balance in the earth. It is a blue gas, with a strong odor. It has got a high-oxidation potential, which is 1.5 times greater than chloride when used as an anti-microbial agent. It also stimulates blood circulation, and the immune response.

Ozone gas properties make it a great antimicrobial agent. As of now it is not a FDA approved product/technique in the US. However it is good for us as dental healthcare professionals to know what products are available and what they can offer.
