Written Assignment #1

Advocacy Report

The drive of Making Strides is to raise awareness, funds, and support the fight against breast cancer. The American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walks raise awareness and funds to save lives from breast cancer. The walk is a celebration of survivors and opportunity to remember loved-ones lost. It is a day that should not be missed and would not be forgotten. They achieve their mission by educating, advocating, and providing funds for research that focuses on providing free information and support, and helping people reduce their breast cancer risk or find it early when it is most treatable. Making Strides works with communities across the country so that every person has a fighting chance.  According to cancer.org “In 2017, an estimated 252,710 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed among women and 2,470 cases will be diagnosed in men. In addition, 63,410 cases of in situ breast carcinoma will be diagnosed among women. Approximately 40,610 women and 460 men are expected to die from breast cancer in 2017” (cancer.org).

I participated in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walks on October 15th, 2017. Which started at 10:00am at 1904 Surf Avenue, Brooklyn, NY and ended at Coney Island Boardwalk; MCU Park.  I also donated money to help fund research programs that save lives from breast cancer.

This is a nursing advocacy activity because as a registered nurse we are obligated to educate and promote knowledge of concerns that affect the health of our communities. In addition, participating in the walk raises awareness and funding for research to help people reduce their breast cancer risk or find it early. Nurse are capable to raise awareness not only in the workplace, but also by contributing in walks or other fundraising events that encourages support programs that help communities across the country.
