SAVE THE DATE-Friday, November 2, 2012

Dear Fellow Educators:

Now that the semester has started please save the date and plan on attending NYSDHEA’s annual dinner meeting.  This year we will be meeting at the Turning Stone Casino and Resort in Verona, NY on Friday, November 2nd from 5-8pm.

We are very excited to announce that Monica DeVanna PhD, Director of Faculty Development and Assessment Programs at Rutgers State University Center for Teaching Advancement and Assessment Research will be our guest speaker for the night.  You will receive two (2) continuing education credits for the presentation.

Our hope for this website is to increase communication between the schools and to be a more cohesive group.  Any suggestions and insights would be greatly appreciated.

Please feel free to contact us for any further information.

Course Title and Description:

Engaging Students in Class with Active Learning Strategies”

Most faculty, struggle with ‚Äúcovering‚ÄĚ the content in a course, not really knowing if the students are learning the information or can apply it to their clinical practice until there is an exam.¬† At that point of the first exam, the unknowing students may be completely past the point of realistic recovery efforts.¬† This predicament is especially true in those in professional fields requiring external certification.¬† This course will present a collection of active learning strategies useful for engaging students in ‚Äúminds-on‚ÄĚ learning in class.¬† Popular and effective activities such as the ‚Äúone-minute paper‚ÄĚ and ‚Äúthink-pair-share‚ÄĚ and ‚Äúconcept mapping‚ÄĚ will be just a few of the many practices that will be presented.¬† The participants will model the strategies to better understand the efficacy and relevance of each within their own courses and teaching styles. ¬†The value of in class informal assessment and student self-assessment methods will also be considered.

Participants will:

1.  modify and develop in class activities to make connections between lecture content and their clinical practice.

2.  use teaching strategies to informally access student learning in class.
3.  develop their own methods and assignments to reinforce in class student l

If you have any topic/topics that you wish to add to the agenda please forward.

February 2012

Dear Dental Hygiene Educators:

As we welcome the New Year and have started the spring semester, we would like to inform you of some of our goals for the next two years for the NY State Dental Hygiene Educator’s Association.

We have developed a free website based on a word press platform, under CUNY’s Open Lab.  Our hope is that this will enhance communication among the dental hygiene schools across the state.  Everyone will have access to it and can easily communicate via blogging.  There will be a page  for each school, if they desire, to exhibit student work, community events, etc.

The website address is: https://openlab.citytech.cuny.edu/groups/nysdhea

Other categories on the website will include: Legislative issues, upcoming ADEA events, State Board meetings, ADHA events, and DHASNY news.

As a result of the last educators meeting, we have made a decision to attend the ADHA’s one day workshop, entitled Dental Hygiene at the Crossroads of Change, presented by Marsha Rhea on Feb 25, 2012 in Chicago.  We will report back to the association via the website a summary of the event.

We are planning on having a guest speaker at the Verona meeting next Fall.  We are open for suggestions for topics and /or speakers.

We look forward to a productive term and welcome input from all!
