Class Learning Reflection CH 8-10

The in class learning discussion was something really helpful. A breakdown of how to study and take notes was really needed for me personally because my notes had little to no structure and going over my notes would become a boring hassle. I think the idea of creating mini concept maps in between each chapter would be simple to read just because its visually simple and reading long written notes is more prolonging.  I would take this lesson into consideration and use the strategies professor went over. 1 hour on each chapter is very doable and it should be more than enough. Federal Hall Reflection

The Federal Hall drawing assignment was a nice first project. In Arch 1101 I did some precision drawings of few structures but the Federal Hall is on a whole different scale and popularity than previous drawings. I learned many things from this assignment such as drawing the big pieces of a building first really should be the first steps to any drawing. Drawing the smaller parts of a building is better to do last because working with the bigger parts would really put the hard work away first and let you focus on the little details. I enjoy this assignment because drawing precise is basically the reason i chose this program and its great to use software to design but the foundations of architecture started off with drawings and would always be the majority of the basics. I am looking forward to finishing this assignment in the coming weeks.

Chapter 1 & 2 Notes

Chapter 1 & 2 Reading Notes

This reading gave foundations of architecture such as the principles, phases and resources we think about when we plan designs. These two chapters were very detailed but had main points that stood out such as sections 1.08-1.15 give some incite on weather conditions to consider but point out soils, trees, sun light, rain and just the basic components that destroy or hurt a building. Next parts of the chapters discuss the type of structural systems, like steel lateral rigid frames , braced frames etc. This chapter is great because it would always be a reference point when designing for the real world. Ching goes on to give the basic measurements of the most common infastructures like sidewalks and bike lanes. Overall these two chapters are foundations of architecture and a place to always come back to if ever needed clarity.

Egress/Staircase Reflection

Egress, exit, exit discharge are all words used in architecture to describe the way people evacuate a building. Today I learned about how each hallway must have exit indicators, such as exit signs and free pathways to the exit. Exit pathways must be fire resistant which are determined by testing design samples in realistic conditions of fire, smoke, and heat. The time before an exit experience these conditions determine the fire rating. Exits usually provide staircases which must be consistent in length, height, width so that each persons can exit safely. Doors must swing towards the exit access which causes less congestion of persons. This class really is important to use in other classes because the steps to design a building will always follow these ideas and sets of rules. This is one of those lessons that you wouldn’t be able to forget because one is always using these two systems of stairs and exits.

Concept Map Reflection

I really like how the concept map displays that architecture really gives a structure its essence. Such as how materials make up the building, wood, masonry, steel or concrete give a building different insides. Structure is the way these materials are used to support weight, weather and complex designs. But architecture is the whole point of a project. Architecture gives art to a building, purpose, and many different ways to interpret a space. This concept map is easy to look at but breaking up each category just gives a little insight on how much more architecture really is. Architecture is what people really see to be honest. Looking at a building the last thing you are going to notice is the Load bearing walls or the point load frame system. One would notice the materials after admiring the design of the structure but this is my way of looking at architecture.
