  • 1990 summer – Bradbury Thompson

90_su_Bradbury%20ThompsonI like this cover for many reasons, first the imagery used is both interesting and strange. The creative use of the primary colors also catches the eye. Despite the clear division in the compositions the artist manages to unify it with the use of the colors red and white on both sides , this also causes the eye of the viewer to move through the piece. The circular frame placed over the elements also brings unity to the piece. Also the hue of yellow chosen compliments the blue used and they are both tertiary colors. Type legibility is accomplished very well with the use of dark font colors against the lighter background , and the use of a lighter color against a darker background, another great thing about the type colors chosen is the fact the colors used were already used in a other places in the piece.

  • 1992 summer – Milton Glaser

92_su_Milton%20GlaserThis piece definitely  evokes the feeling of summer with the vibrant color choices. Here however subtle the the use of primary colors occurs again, as well as the use of the complimentary colors red and green. My favorite part of the the composition is the fact that  the different aspects of the focal point are labeled with various  aspects that correspond with summer. The arrows pointing from the aspects  corresponding with the labels are red a color that contrasts well with the colors underneath. The only drawback of this cover is the type legibility. The type used for the labels is clear and easy to read, but the type used for the summer quarter information is perhaps too small, and the red color used for it makes it hard to read.

  • 1994 spring – Michael Vanderbyl

94_sp_Michael%20VanderbylOut of all the covers i chose this one is definitely the most simple but perhaps it is the most effective. Without much ambiguity , and without seeing the quarter this was created i was able to tell that i was for the spring. The imagery of the bear with springs on his feet while holding a flower is comical but combine identifiable spring components. The color scheme though simple is very effective. the black against the yellow background, and the green against the black contrast well. The use of the use of the black and  the hint of white as eye of the bear accompanied with the use of white and black for ucla logo bring the composition together.

ENHANCED TYPE SKETCHES

For our enhanced type sketches we were asked to pick 3 quotes and create different concepts that creatively applied the quote. the three quotes i chose were “good grief i’ve been reaping
what i’ve sown” for the earl sweatshirt song titled Grief,A423DA85-D9FD-40AC-BD8B-7B6F4AC481581A7E27FA-75AC-466B-A4BF-129CA7B88530

the next quote i chose “there’s a peace to enlighten the addict , thats light in the addict” form the j givens song humming bird stance.4D660A5A-C809-44D5-B430-083A116AC36962E2D371-35F4-4A0F-8AD4-830F9B90F7FB

the last quote i chose is  “where there is not vision the people perish” found in proverbs 29 verse 18. D669713E-619A-4312-9F5E-965F9ADCEEB6B5A2F9CC-213D-4783-A9BF-6761B2B0C30D

Recent work

My cousin Mark’s wife was in the process of writing a book.  after asking her one day how it was going I came to the knowledge that she wanted an artist to draw something for her book. naturally I was excited and wanted to be apart of her project. she gave me pretty specific concepts to base the artwork off of. the first concept was initially supposed to be a girl with her back turned holding a singularly colored red heart. however I altered the composition slightly.girl holding heart scan

the second was a woman with her midsection exposed covering her breast with the instagram logo as her legs.woman midsection exposed scan

the 3rd was a drawing of a man in half business attire and half street wear, man street business scan the last was a boy standing with hands clasped in prayer. boy standing in prayer scaneach drawing was black and white with accent colors. these were fun to create becuase of the love i have for the medium of pen. one difficulty I faced while completing this project was trying to maintain a cohesive style. while drawing it took a lot of discipline to not get carried away. i was truly blessed to be apart of this.

Uconn “A New Husky For A New Era”

timeline1

The University Of Connecticut made the decision in 2013 to rebrand itself with the help of clint shaner the head of graphic designer at nike, along with the input of the rest of the nike team ,as well as alumni, students,  student athletes, and coaches. the former 3 quarter profile was seen as a poor representation of the fierce tenacity, and toughness that uconn players exhibit on the field. the basis of the designed that was used up to the point of rebranding had been used since the 1980’s  and was modernized in  2002. the last evolution of the jonathan the husky logo was substantially fiercer, and more intimidating than the 3 quarter profile version of him with his tongue sort of playfully sticking out. if anything the new logo design and branding should definitely do the job of intimidating all future opponents.

one sunday upon the requirement of one of my teachers my grandmother and i attempted to go gallery hopping. one of the locations we visited was the mike weiss gallery. my grandmother a 65 year old woman seemed to appreciate the artwork we saw, these are some shots from that day.
