As a health care professional who took the Florence Nightingale oath in 2009; I believe in
each and every line of that oath. Being a nurse of the 21st century isn’t only about passing
the NCLEX; it challenges you to go above and beyond the call of duty. Nurses today are no
longer viewed as the person who only does what the doctors order, but are viewed as
individuals who also play an intricate role along with other members of the multi-
disciplinary team to provide a safe discharge or outcome. My views of nursing have
changed drastically since my first clinical rotation on how I perform as a prudent nurse at
the bedside. My philosophy of nursing is that nurses should not only be compassionate,
caring and empathetic but also a patient advocate and taking the responsibility and
accountability to provide complete care for a group of patients from admission to a safe
discharge into the community.
