Graphic Design Principles II (COMD 1200_D156)

This course explores creative visual thinking and its importance to communication design. Students will experiment with image making techniques and learn to use graphic elements to communicate concepts and ideas. The course will emphasize the integration of communication concepts, type and graphics and its relationship to multiple disciplines such as advertising, graphic design, web design, illustration, broadcast design production, and others. Students develop projects from thumbnails through final presentations.

A variety of basic layouts and formats are introduced, building technical and practical fluency in setting and working with type for both print and screen. This course further explores topics learned in COMD1167 Type and Media, such as the typeface selection, and the use of the typographical grids. Problem solving for most common typographical problems are discussed.

This basic design and color theory course explores graphic communication through the understanding of the elements and principles of design, as well as the design process, including idea development through final execution. Students develop basic skills in two-dimensional design, color and content creation while employing the design process of research, sketching and experimentation. Communication designers use the concepts explored in this course in disciplines such as advertising, graphic design, web design, illustration, broadcast design, photography, and game design. COMD1103 Foundation Drawing, D120, FA2016

This is an introductory course designed to explore the basic tools, techniques and principles of drawing. Students will develop an understanding of the five basic perceptual skills of drawing: The Perception of Edges, The Perception of Spaces, The Perception of Relationships, The Perception of Light and Shadow, and The Perception of the Whole Form. This will be continued with an-depth study of classical drawing principles critical to achieving realism in drawing. Concepts such as Composition, Proportion and Perspective will be covered. Students will learn to further render forms through analysis of light and shadow and by utilizing the 5-value system.
