Week 1  

(Lecture 3 hours) Shear and bending moment in beams.

 

Week 2 & 3

(Lecture 3 hours) Tensile and compressive stresses due to bending. Flexure formula. Shear stresses. Beam analysis.

 

Week 4 & 5

(Lecture 3 hours) Design of beams. Design process. Design of steel and timber beams.

 

Week 6  & 7

(Lecture 3 hours) Deflection of beams. Curvature and bending moment. The formula method.

Week 8

Midterm Exam

Week 9 & 10

(Lecture 3 hours) Combined stresses. Biaxial bending. Combine of axial and bending stresses. Combine of normal and shear stresses. Mohr’s circle.

Week 11 & 12

(Lecture 3 hours) Columns. Euler’s formula for pin-ended columns. Extension of Euler’s formula to columns with other end conditions. Axially loaded steel machine parts.

Week 13 & 14

(Lecture 3 hours) Connections. AISC standard. Modes of failure of bolted connections. High strength connections.

 

Week 15

Final exam
