3blue1brown videos

The YouTube channel/website 3blue1brown has a series of excellent videos on calculus which explain some of the topics we are covering in class.

You can watch the videos on their website, which includes additional written explanations to go with the videos–see the links below, or go to their Calculus page; or you can watch the videos via YouTube (videos embedded below).

All of these are worth watching, and will help you understand the ideas behind the techniques we are learning in class!

The paradox of the derivative:

Power rule through geometry and Trig derivatives through geometry (two separate lessons on their website, covering the following video):

Class 12 & 13 Recap (Tues Oct 15 & Wed Oct 16)

Topics/WebWork

We finished Sec 3.3, covering the Product Rule and Quotient Rule, and went through some examples from the WebWork sets for each of these. We also introduced the Chain Rule (Sec 3.6 of the textbook), for differentiating a composite function–we will cover this in more detail next week, as well as the derivatives of the trig functions (Sec 3.5).

Class 10 Recap (Mon Oct 7) – Exam #1 Review

Exam #1

We will have our first midterm exam tomorrow, Wednesday Oct 9. I posted a list of review exercises for the exam here, which includes the two quizzes (quiz solutions can be found at OpenLab Files), examples from the textbook, and most of the open WebWork set “Derivatives – Power Rule.”

We spent most of Monday’s class reviewing for the exam by going through some of these exercises–see below.

(Note that the college is closed next Monday (Oct 14), but on Tuesday Oct 15 all classes follow a Monday schedule. So next week we will have class on Tuesday and Wednesday.)
