Part A: From reading what Lamott said, I do think a first draft is more about processing then product. When writing a first draft I feel like you shouldnât think too much about it and let your creativity loose and just write what every pops in to your head. A first draft is meant to have errors in order for your writing to improve, the more drafts there are the better the writing gets. So having a terrible first draft isnât as bad as it seems it a way to further your writing as Lamott says many successful writings she knows have shitty first drafts.
Part B: âIt’s not like you don’t have a choice, because you do — you can either type, or kill yourself.” We all often feel like we are pulling teeth, even those writers whose prose ends up being the most natural and fluidâ. I feel like this quote is significant because itâs basically saying youâre the only one who can change the way you write. You either just write and let your creativity take over or struggle and overthink what you write.Â
Part C: I would call this type of writing a memoir because itâs a story based on her perspective of writing a first draft. In paragraph 5 she talks about her experience in writing, she tends to use the word I a lot as well. She also talks about her experience with other writer who also went through writing a first draft
Hi Ariana, I agree that the first draft is a place where you should let all your creative juices flow. I also liked the quote you chose because it describes exactly how I feel having to write anything for school especially when I have no where to start.
I agree that it’s a memoir because she included some events from her life to support her idea which is that writing a first draft is a process.
