Shitty First Draft-Miah Segura

Part A) According to Lamott, writing is about the process rather than the product. Lamott stresses this throughout her essay because before you can get to a product you would need to go through many “shitty drafts” to get to a final good writing piece. The ability to write first drafts gives writers a chance to get guidance towards what they want to include or exclude in their piece and even sharpens their idea of their piece. It’s a “trust the process” type of situation and almost every writer has gone through shitty drafts, it is unavoidable, and the best part is no one will get to read those awful drafts.

Part B) “but this is just the fantasy of the uninitiated. I know some very great writers, writers you love who write beautifully and have made a great deal of money, and not one fo them sits down routinely feeling wildly enthusiastic and confident. Not one of them writes elegant first drafts.” When it comes to us writing a piece it’s hard to gather ourselves, write good and end up with an excellent published piece. We think like this because we strongly believe writers who are known for their very good writing, make an instant good writing piece with so much confidence but it does not work like that. Which gives us so much pressure in writing something good.

Part C) The genre I would call this type of writing would be narrative. Lamott has put her own story about shitty drafts and how she has realized that almost all good writing must go through the process of a bad writing piece.

  1. Hi Miah, I agree that the first draft is allowed to be bad and you can use it to guide you throughout the rest of your writing. I also liked the quote that you chose because it brings a relatable aspect in to what the author is trying to say, and saying that some of the writers that we read me know also had bad first drafts.

  2. I agree with you that its a trust the process type of situation. I also picked the same quote because not everyone we read from has the best first drafts. I also think its a narrative because she talked about how herself used first drafts and going through the process of getting to the product.
