Writing Task Mentor Quote– Jacob.b

My Working Outline

  1. INTRO- Living with a Hispanic parent
  2. Mom struggle and background
  3. My relationship with mom
  4. Scene of my mom giving me advice in middle school

Living with a Hispanic parent can be one of the most annoying things, but it’s the best thing that happened and I’m very grateful. When me and my brother were younger our parents would make us clean the whole house, every weekend. Don’t get me wrong we would still sweep and clean up every day but that would be the little things. We would have to clean the entire house meaning 1st FL and the 2nd FL and the basement. They would tell us that we should keep the place organized because nobody would like to come into a messy place. Also, its good to keep clean it would help us to become more organized. But the main thing they would tell us would be that no matter what school will always come first. Especially my mom, she would say that we should finish high school and then go to college to get a higher education. She wouldn’t ever let me stay home from school even if I was sick.

My mother growing up didn’t have anything as a kid. She grew up in a poor place in Ecuador called Cuenca. It’s a very big city not many skyscrapers just many old fashion buildings, but the part where she lived was more suburban very open, so it was like a farm. She did not complete school, didn’t even get to complete middled school. She had to get jobs to help her family of 11 or 12 I can’t really remember. Form what I heard there were many jobs she’s talked about like housekeeper, babysitter and etc. Being one of the oldest means taking care of her siblings and working many jobs to help her parents. Putting everything else before herself.

My mother and I have a really good relationship and a close bond. She’s like my best friend she’s always there to give me advice about anything. She always tries to give me everything I want and gets sad whenever she can’t. I can’t really remember a time where my mom put me and my siblings last. She would Always try to help me with my homework when I was young even if she didn’t understand herself.

“las cosas en lyfe siempre van a ser dificiles” she told me in a calm voice after telling her “keeping up with school and after school activities was difficult”.

“iz Aup too you para encontrar diferente maneras de resolver para llegar donde tu quieres estar en la vida”. Always pushing me to never give up.

  1. PROBLEM: You have written 3 HWs and I am not sure I can see the beginning of an Education Narrative.

Have you made an appointment with the tutors? THat would be the first thing I would do if I were you!

Here you are paying tribute to your mother who has said meaningful wise words to you. Has she been the driving force behind your educational journey? Has she been there at critical moments pushing you forward IN SCHOOL?

If yes, then that is what you need to SHOW ME!

Use the Mentor Quote choice from the Assignment and Start with:

“No matter what, school will always come first!”

This is what my mom says. She wants me and my [brothers?] to finish high school and go to college to get a higher education. She wouldn’t ever let me stay home from school even if I was sick.

[NOW HERE SHOW ME –] She would Always try to help me with my homework when I was young even if she didn’t understand herself.

[Reach back into your memory and CREATE A SCENE – CREATE THEATRE OF THE MIND – WHERE? In the living room, at the kitchen table – WHAT age were you? WHAT grade? WHAT subject? WHAT HW task? HOW did she help you? WHAT Spanish words did she say when when was helping you and how she was able to help you despite that language difference – if that is true.  DESCRIBE with CSD concrete specific details and dialogue].

PROBLEM: You don’t have much here.

What are the events that will SHOW your mother being the big influence in your school life? Did she call the school when you were failing math class? Did she get a cousin to come over to tutor you in math? Did she come to school for every parent-teacher conference and use a translator?  IDK – but you do so — WHAT DID SHE DO? SHOW ME.
