Intro- AFRAH

My name is Afrah, I was named after my aunt. Afrah means happiness in the Arabic language. I am 19 years old, and my Zodiac sign is Gemini. I have three brothers and I am the only girl in my family. I was born and raised in Yemen and my first language is Arabic. I moved to the United States with my family when I was 12 years old in 2016. It was a major change in my life. Something I struggled with when I first came to the U.S. was language, it was difficult for me to learn a totally different language. I never gave up on working hard, I kept studying and improving my English. I am a shy and quiet person, so it was hard for me to interact with people and practice my English.

One thing I am good at is listening to others. I love listening to people’s stories and experiences especially old people because they went through a lot in their lifetime. Currently, I am an undecided major, but I am thinking about majoring in nursing. I am interested in doing something in the healthcare field but I really didn’t know what exactly I wanted to be. I chose nursing because I know that I enjoy encouraging and assisting others and seeing them in their best condition. Something I am trying to learn is baking since I love eating desserts and chocolate.

  1. I love the meaning of your name. I myself am majoring in nursing for the similar reason of helping others so it’s nice that we have something in common.

  2. Love your name!

Just a thought, for the Ed Narrative — I wonder if you might want to use your two different worlds and experience in school when you came at 12 years to write on the prompt Between Two Worlds. Being between two different cultures: Arabic and American can be rich material for an education narrative. Look at When I was Puerto RIcan and Mother Tongue and also THe Danger of A Single Story. These are the next readings; they all deal with struggling between two different worlds and how this affected the writer’s education.
