Hannael Foucault – Practice Reflection

Do you agree or disagree with the information that the author presents? Why or why not? Be specific!* What did you learn from the text?

The article ‘Schools are Killing Curiosity’ highlights the importance of curiosity in young children. I agree with what the author is saying in the text because I have seen first hand children learning best through being curiosity. I have a little sister who is constantly asking me questions about things and I usually just shoo her away. This passage has shown to me that kids aren’t just asking 1 million questions to be annoying, but they use that as an outlet to learn. For example, one time when I was helping my little sister with her homework on naming animals there was a dog barking outside, and it seem to keep distracting her. Instead of going to the window with her,  showing her the dog and building a lesson off of that I got frustrated with her and told her to focus on the assignment. Now I know by doing that I am causing more harm than good.
The article has opened my eyes to see adults should encourage young children to ask questions because if the child always get dismissed when being curious, they won’t ask questions when they really need help and will be behind. In the text, researchers talked about how children can ask up to 107 questions an hour. Learning about this fact just solidified for me to make sure that next time my little sister bombardes me with questions I need to remember its in her nature to ask them and I need to encourage it

  1. I agree with you Hannael curiosity is important for children and I totally understand what its like to be asked from younger kids questions. Sometimes you just pushed they away because you think they’re trying to annoy you but reading this passage it has also open my eyes to be okay with getting asked questions. That’s their way on learning. I really like how you added an example on what happened to you and your realization.

  2. Hey Hannael i agree that children are better learners when they are more curious. Its good that now you know that when your siblings ask you questions your gonna encourage it. You answer this question very well.

  3. good response — Excellent Reflection. I like the last part: I need to remember its in her nature to ask them and I need to encourage it.
