Part 2: Summary
In the featured article “Schools Are Killing Curiosity” Wendy Berliner tells us that schools should encourage students to be curious. According to the writer, Dr. Prachi Shah developmental pediatrician at Mott children’s hospital supported the idea of children in economic disadvantage to be curious because it can be important and cause them to perform their best. With the students being more curious, it opens their mind to find creative ways of thinking and other ways of problem solving. The researcher, Susan Engel and author of The Hungry Mind shares how she noticed the older the students were, the fewer questions they asked and the less curious they are compared to younger students. This shows that they have been taught not to speak their mind on certain topics which then leads them to finding a harder time asking for help or stop them from asking questions they do not understand a lecture. According to an anecdote of Wendy Berliner, she explained how she witnessed children becoming creative when their toys have been taken away and replaced with cardboard boxes, cans, and computers. Wendy Berliner provided all the support on this issue of schools killing children’s curiosity and that they should be given a chance to find new ways as students get older to not lose their curiosity.
