PART 2: SUMMARY

Mariah Miller emphasizes the need for individuals to think things through before speaking in her TED talk, “Educate Before You Discriminate.” Miller discusses how she was attacked with racial slurs at school. She mentions a handful of the slurs she has been called, such as monkey, blackie, slave, etc. Miller discusses how people have created the “n-word pass,” which allows someone who is not black to speak the n-word without being racist. Miller describes her experience with a boy who consistently uses the n-word. After calling her the n-word, he put one fist in the air, got down on one knee, and said, “Black Lives Matter,” which infuriated her. Miller emphasizes how clueless this generation is and how ignorant we are of the background of our racial groups. “Slurs are not okay, they never have been, and they never will be,” she adds. Miller offers several suggestions on how to put an end to this offensive harassment. She advises students who have been subjected to harassment not to be hesitant to speak up, since their voices matter. She advises those who use slurs to treat others the way that they wish to be treated. Miller concluded by saying, “Imagine if we all weren’t so clueless to what we say to others and celebrated our differences.”
