The Lobby of Voorhees Hall is connected to the cafeteria spatially but is there any separation? (hint: look left, right and up.)
What is it and what is it for?
Yes, there seems to be a separation. It looks like a garage door styled gate that is probably fire rated that can seal off the two spaces from each other.
Infront of the front stops is a wall that acts as a divider from the 2nd floor. If it were to close off, it would provide a protected means of egress.
Between the lobby and the base of the stairs leading to the cafeteria there is a fire shutter that closes in case of an emergency. In case of fire or smoke to divide and the entrance and the cafeteria area.
It provides a means of egress incase a fire or other destruction is caused. The fire shutter is there to stop the the fire from completely entering to the area when fire is sensed.
The stairs leading from the lobby, up and into the cafeteria, there seems to be some kind of fire proof door. This door seems to be only triggered if there is some sort of fire and it reaches up to there. The door will then close so that the fire will be contained and no one will use those stairs as a means of egress.
