  1. This reading was different for me in one way from all the previous ones. I believe we got so much information on this topic that I could actually pull off an attempt to put a brick or masonry mini project together. ( Really tempted to). It probably helps that it can be done without expensive equipment. It went in depth enough that I feel I have a deeper understanding of this topic than of any others so far. I think all the terms will be useful in communicating and that its great to have the vocabulary to express things like brick layout style and what goes into arches, vaults, domes.

  2. With this reading, this was a lot more different from the previous readings we have done in this class. It was more comfortable to read and there was a lot of information on masonry but I found this book to be easier to understand. The history behind how brick is used in the construction/architecture world was helpful and gave me a clear insight into how brick is used within the field and its many properties. I did find how bricks are formed was very interesting and it did increase my curiosity about how brick is used in our everyday lives.

  3. I agree with Jonathan and Lara that this reading was different from the others and that I got a better understanding of how masonry is put together after I read it. I think it has to do with me seeing it on buildings all over the city either built or being built and the fact that I can relate it to toys like legos was of much help. I learned a lot about bricks and how they have helped in the construction and also how they in a way save money when they are used. I found it cool how bricks can be used to make domes and arch and not only to make bearing walls.

  4. This reading covered the history of mortar construction and the different uses in ancient times. My history of arch classes briefly covered the topics but the reading gave a more detailed description. I never knew that heavier cmu blocks were cheaper to make as well as being more water resistant and have a better resistance to sound. It was interesting to understand the different types of masonry and their uses in everyday construction. I take something like brick for granted and never really tried to understand it’s components before.

  5. This reading discussed the construction of mortar and it’s various uses in ancient times. Something I found interesting about the reading were and uses of brick (example: how brick can be used to create arches), and how it can potentially save money by being used.

  6. This reading helped me understand how mortar works for masonry and how most of the great work of architecture was made out of that masonry. I also learned how mortar can be made out of clay and shale. This reading covered the different types of masonry such as brick, concrete and stone masonry. It gave me a better idea on how materials would work on a building and how everything is almost related to each other. I also learned how heavier blocks have more strength than lighter blocks. This also taught me the different types of building stones. Overall this reading was very easy to understand because the author explained it simply.

  7. After the reading 5, I learned how mortar was used in ancient times and how it is used in present days. I also learned how bricks are formed and that the buildings with the specific details or unusual geometries require a custom sizes and shapes of a brick. Additionally, the discussion and the visual explanation of how brick and concrete masonry works on a building helped me get a better understanding on that reading.

  8. Reading #5 broke down the construction and history of the use of mortar. How in fact it’s a vital part of masonry. In addition, I gain additional knowledge on the different types of masonry such as brick, stone, and concrete. This made me understand better how to construct these masonry types. Overall, this reading made something bland like bricks an interesting topic to collect information from.

  9. Reading #5 went over a lot of information already mentioned in readings ##3-4. But I really enjoyed reading paragraph about the historical use of masonry material in building. In fact those structures like Parthenon still stand ( though partially), it just proves the point that the masonry units are really durable materials. I really appreciated the photos showing step by step process of brick laying. The reading helped me to sort out different kinds of brick manufacturing, which before were confusing. In my opinion the reading gave a very clear explanation of masonry terminology, and, overall, I found it pretty useful and informative.

  10. Reading 5 helped me understand how mortar functions and its purpose. It also help me get a better understanding of brick, stone, and concrete. I got a better understanding of when and how to use them and why they function the way they do. I see these different types everyday and understanding the history behind them and how they are constructed made me have a better appreciation for them.

  11. Although there was a lot of information in this reading, it was easier to process. It was interesting to know how masons build a brick wall. This reading took us step by step, showing us how the bricks are laid and the proper position they should be placed in. I also learned so much about how mortar works and all the functions it has in masonry construction. For example, it acts as a seal which helps prevent wind and water from penetrating.

  12. This reading is pretty interesting because it talks about the process it takes for masonry, how bricks are formed, fired, classify, chosen, sized and layed, and it is easier to understand because it has pictures of real life when all those things are being applied.
