For good reason, New York throughout its history has been known as a walking city. Even today in the twenty-first century many New Yorkers live well without owning an automobile. Some are even happier without one. All that said, public and private transportation have played a role in the life and fabric of the city now for almost two centuries. Examples include the omnibus, the horsecar, the elevated railway (“The el”), the subway, and of course the automobile itself. In 100-300 words share your thoughts on the benefits and/or hazards of one or more of these modes of transportation. How might a city like New York benefit and/or suffer from their presence? In addition to their obvious advantages what, if any, might be their drawbacks? You do not have to write about all of them. Choose one or more as you wish. You have wide latitude and can answer however you think best.

  1. One of the most frustrating things about any major city, in this case NYC, is the traffic. Whether it be pedestrian, automobile, or subway, you’re bound to run into traffic at some point during your stay. This is due to the fact that the city has grown massively since the transportation infrastructure has been implemented first, and frankly it is in need of an overdue update. It causes unnecessary headaches and stress to the commuters, but also has a malicious impact on our environment. I always note quality of air change the moment I leave the city. Have you noticed that the city skies are rarely crystal blue as they are in rural areas, it seems like we’re stuck in a permanent cloud of smog. I blame the ever-failing Metropolitan Transit Authority for not keeping up with the demand or the requests of its riders which in turn forces people to use their own transportation, and in most cases its cars. Bikes are a great way to get around the city and stay fit, but also dangerous as there are few to none exclusive bike lanes forcing bikers to ride alongside their metal counterparts. More often than not, car drivers don’t pay attention to the bikers and cause serious or even fatal injuries turning off a lot of people from this mode of transportation. This city has outgrown the current roads and means of transportation, we need a new solution to get people around without harming the environment and ourselves in the process.

  2. The development of infrastructure and public transportation in many ways has upgraded our modern world but has also created its problems for the people in New York. The MTA subway, in a way, is infamous for its frequent delays, yet a large portion of New Yorkers rely on it. It can get one person from point A to point B in a couple of minutes. I think it’s best used when someone is trying to get to the City, traffic is rough there. On another note, we also have automobiles. It benefits those who are in a rush or those who would rather get to their desired place at a rapid pace. But this has also made people not want to walk to their destination even if that walking distance time is about 20 minutes. Most people have become lazy with walking and are inactive. With the usage of these modes of transportation such as the train or automobile, it increases a person’s commute time, but this advantage for one has a long term effect on the climates well-being-and is a great factor of greenhouse gas emissions.

  3. The world always advocates to use less personal automobiles, and take transportation to reduce the amount of pollution emission into our air. New York City is famously known for the MTA Subways and Buses, which are most convenient to Manhattan, Brooklyn, and some parts of Queens. Limited and expensive parking spots, larger traffic in Manhattan, and the convenience of MTA Subways and Buses have allowed New Yorkers and tourists to travel around some boroughs. In Japan, your fare price depends on how far you are traveling, but New York City has a fixed price. There are larger amounts of people willing to walk to their destination from their point because of how short the distance is. Also, New York City has CitiBike allowing locals and tourists to bike around the city, and enjoying the many views to the bridges and Hudson River. However, some people chose to travel by car because of how often major delays happen with MTA Subways and Buses. People often found themselves circling blocks to find available parking space which causes more traffic. Besides, New York City has a large number of narrow streets, and people often double park. MTA Fares are increasing due to the reconstruction of existing subway stations despite relying on a system that hasn’t been updated since the 1940s. Queens doesn’t have as many subway lines running through compared to Brooklyn, and Staten Island is completely out of the picture as if it wasn’t one of the five boroughs that make up New York City.

  4. New York city will always be NYC because of the effectiveness of mass transit. NYC Subway has served as a way to get to other boroughs/states more easily. it has helped with the growth of companies mainly in Manhattan since parking is extremely limited and costly. Due to the NYC population, the mass transportation especially the subway has benefited New Yorkers, It helps you save money, the fare is very good ($2.75), it’s faster and reliable. I like the fact that most of the trains connect so you do not have to pay an extra fare. We don’t suffer from the subway, just that the money we are paying, the city has to reconstruct and keep the subway tidy. I realized they are too many homeless people on the train, which is not safe for the passengers because most of them sleep outside and might pick up for example lies or ticks and spread it on the train. Now with the covid19 most of the homeless do not wear a mask. NYC authorities have to evacuate them into a safe space for them to get the necessary help they need. Last weekend there was a train derailment on the A train which was caused by a homeless man who threw construction debris on the rails. This put a lot of passengers life in danger. Another concern is for people to be connected to the Wi-Fi while underground since our phones are our best friends in this century. If possible, they should invent new and more trains since most of the time the train is overcrowded. NYC transit is doing amazing jobs especially during this pandemic and I am forever grateful for their services.

  5. New York’s transportation systems over many generations has accomplished a certain task and it’s to take someone from point A to point B with a decreased amount of time, transportation has also and still is being used to transport bulks of thing that other sources could or couldn’t do. As new techniques and technology changes, ingenuity starts to grow to create something new or make something better. Which has placed us in today’s world in the twenty first centry, as time goes by things become old or no longer is able to complete its task because it has reached its full capacity, as of today train stations are facing some technical difficulties. MTA is trying to create more stops or redirect a group of people in a different path to combat the congestion/ traffic. Like for an example pen station is a heavily used transit location that is used daily but it has reached its capacity and it is now required to have a new extension to combat the amount of people that are using it daily. New York is a city has established in a certain way of living and continues to grow the moment it stops growing is when it will crash and take a big hit.

  6. I’ve always loved how you can get around NYC just as easily (if not easier) via methods of transportation other than a car. You might have to sacrifice speed at times, but it’s great for the environment, and each option is its own adventure. When it comes to the bus, for example, you get to take in scenery you normally wouldn’t pay attention to & destress. Sometimes that looks like reading or playing video games, while other times it just means sleeping. You can catch up on work too, if you really need to. All of these things would be completely off the table if you were driving. Not to mention how $2.75 beats the cost of buying a car, filling up the tank, paying for insurance, covering maintenance & repairs…

The only times I reconsider taking public transit are when the system falls short. Delays, gross seats, buses that never show up, and tight squeezes during rush hour can really mess up your day (or take a toll on your dignity). Maybe if it pushed me over the edge, I’d upgrade to something else — but it would probably be Lyft at best. Who wants to worry about parking?

  7. I believe bringing back the horse car would lead to more problems than benefits.
The reason I believe it’s not a good option to revive the horse car transportation is
because of the competition that’ll exist between animals and vehicles of this era.
Most vehicles of this generation can out perform horses in terms of speed and distance.
horse cars would also require the owners to handle them from their feces if they were to
do their business on the road, feeding them and having a dedicated place for their
livelihood, etc. horse cars would be better used if only for special occasions and events in
places where vehicles wouldn’t be a bother to them as horses would more likely panic if a
bigger vehicle like a truck were nearby with their loud engines or using a horn. If the
horse car is revived, I believe it’s only effective for special occasions only.

  8. Transportation, public or private are design to be convenient for people going from one place to another, and just like the two sides of the same coin, there are both beneficial and hazardous. Automobile for example is what people take the most worldwide. An automobile like car and buses are beneficial because that they are very simple and convenient for people to go from point A to point B, create more jobs opportunity for those who are interested, and it also creates a different type of atmosphere when traveling. In a personal car, you are surrounded by objects you are familiar with, and traveling with friends or family down a long road is a nice feeling. Buses, on the other hand, are surrounded by unfamiliarity which opens an opportunity for new experiences and discoveries even though sometimes you may not want them. The consequences for such convenience are pollution in the air, the mass amount of resources use to create the automobiles, and the space to store such vehicles. In a city like New York, we need transportation to go around the place, transportation symbolizes busy cities, mass transit for people to go to where they want when they want, such is the life of the city that never sleeps.

  9. NYC transportation is one of the most frustrating things. Sure in comparison with today’s “ the horsecar” can’t compete with auto vehicles and trains. However, both have there pros and cons. For example, if we did proceed with the “horsecar” in modern-day I’m pretty sure the city would be less air polluted on one hand but, other problems would arise. would we be able to give these animals the proper care? I feel like as a human race we exploit all of our resources just to keep a level of comfort between us. Not to say it’s not worth giving a shot but we can’t even keep sanitation levels now in modern-day. For example, not all people throw waste in trashcans some are left lying on the floor. The same goes for dog waste. How can we adapt and care for an animal who needs extra care if we can even do that today? All in all, it sounds like a pretty good idea, less urban heat. Less air pollution but would we really sacrifice our comfort of cars and trains for a more viable option?

  10. In today’s society many men and women residing in New York may take public transportation. There are many different options of commuting such as The Long Island Railroad, Metro North Railroad, Amtrak train, Airplane and Mta transit subway train and Mta bus and car. In my opinion the benefits of using all the required transportation listed is that it can get you to your designation in a timely manner. The safety hazards can be that any of the different transportation services can have a delay in traffic and cause you to be late for work, school, supermarket, shopping center whatever elses you are heading to. Also it;s a 50/50 that she can be in a terrible accident or crash and someone can possibly become injured badly.

New York benefits from New Yorkers riding the subway line, bus, and car that mass transit is boosting prices and money is rising rapidly. Money is rising rapidly by people commuting and using these different services. New York City is well known for the city not sleeping. Mass transportation is operating at different hours, within the morning, day time and late nights. New Yorkers can suffer because of the crowdedness on the train or bus. Many commuters complained about standing for a long period of time before they actually got a seat to sit down.

During the pandemic many people suffered tremendously because at one point the train was shut down at 12am due to transit cleaning the subway station. Some people were stuck without transportation and either had to car pool or find another source of transportation. Other sources of transportation can be walking, renting an electric scooter, New City city bike rental program or riding your own bicycle. The city may also benefit health wise. Most people who commute constantly are getting exercise and keeping their endurance healthy. Everyone’s weight will be maintained by walking and moving at a fast pace. Levels of heart disease and obesity will decrease.

  11. New York City has always been known as the worlds concrete jungle. It holds a vast amount of population, within the city that never sleeps. As the years traveled by, modernization has significantly increased the way we spend our daily lives and commute from friends, running errands, and work. With the advancement today in terms of automobiles and both underground and above ground trains, even boats, it has greatly increased the way we may forsee what commuting might be like. We here constantly in the news today about advancements in travel, whether it be gas and diesel operated cars, to very modern and futuristic electric Tesla cars, to the what might seem like the dominant and stuck in time train wagons.

These methods of travel benefit us personally and some times financially whether living in a city like New York but in the long run, it really isn’t such a great method. With the MTA for example; Prices still to this day, seem to skyrocket in commuting price, but rarely ever in effectiveness. With the constant train delays, over crowding and what seems to always be, a “sick passenger” this method of travel has significantly became not only just irritating, but living in this new era of pandemics and public fear, a cesspool of disease and sickness.

The MTA has its benefits in an over crowded city. It serves millions of daily commuters. But a foreseeable improvement seems farther than the eye could see. And with the vast climate changes occurring in the world, New York needs to create a climate advancement that will upgrade the way we live our daily lives, and at the same time save our planet. One could say, the state of NY should follow in the footsteps of California, whove agreed on commuting to a green future by 2035 by eliminating all gas powered vehicles which has already been signed into law. Maybe this way, New York City may have a brighter future of commuting. One that not only serves the community in travel effectiveness, but also reducing its carbon foot print and creating a safer way of traveling during all of our daily lives.

  12. The best way to travel in New York City for me has been driving. There are a lot of advantages to driving in the city such as being able to get to your destination much quicker than you would by subway and being able to carry things you wouldn’t normally carry on bus. Driving in the city is a lot different than driving in the suburbs of long Island you have to walk a thin line between being assertive and reckless. It seems counterintuitive but driving patiently and cautiously in the streets of Manhattan will actually increase the chances of you getting in an accident because everyone around you is moving at such a fast pace that if you can’t keep up you’ll find yourself slowing things down for everyone else. Even though I love to drive I prefer taking the subway to City Tech because the station is right next to the building and I do not have to look for parking which could take up to an hour. Ultimately driving saves more time and is way more convenient than the subway but the subway allows you to do other things you would not normally do while you drive like write and sleep.

  13. The automobile is seen as both a blessing and a curse, either the car will get you to your destination quickly or it can be the most troublesome thing going on in your life. New York has benefited from the automobile as it allowed the traveling of food deliveries or package deliveries to your destination, however the traffic in New York is will have you waiting minutes upon hours. Without the creation if the automobile there would be no ice cream trucks for the summer or those nights outs with friends. Even so, the automobile is not a friend all the time as accidents have occurred because of the way people handle the automobile. As those accidents do occur, without the creation of the automobile the saving of lives would have never been quicker because of the ambulance trucks.

  14. It’s been almost 10years living in this city and I love it. New York City has been the world’s flourishing place and because of so many different races live here, transportation has also been well developed. I was surprised that you don’t need a car to travel around the city, instead, the MTA subway takes care of you. There are buses everywhere but I feel the subway still plays an important rule in new york city. Whether you want to go upper Manhattan to the Bronx or all the way down to Brooklyn, you can take the subway in an hour. It’s also cheap compared to a taxi or uber. My dad bought himself a motorcycle since we moved to lower Jamaica. It took 10-15 walk to the subway station and 5-10 mins to the nearby bus station. He used to work in manhattan but after we move here, he decided to find jobs around jamaica and taking a bus or subway isn’t convenient. He thought about taking an electronic bicycle but it’s not legal even if you can see it everywhere for the delivery of food by a Chinese man.

  15. New York would always be known to be a walking city. The New York City public transportation is very advanced compared to other cities in the United States. Personally, having public transportation benefits people near trains and busses. Even though the trains often have many delays and route changes the transportation system can get you to different boroughs in half the time of driving. For example, I currently work in Williamsburg. Taking the train during rush hour is drastically faster and efficient for me rather than sitting in traffic. A twenty-five-minute drive without traffic easily takes me close to an hour and fifteen minutes in the afternoon. But I think mass transit has plenty of room for improvement. A metro card to get on a train or a bus is 2.75. While an unlimited metro card for a week is around $33. Personally, that is drastically high for a transportation system that is always crowded, unreliable, and not sanitary.

  16. Living in New York City there are numerous ways of getting around. You can take public transportation which includes the train or bus for a low fair, $2.75. You can also use your own automobile for traveling around the city. Both efficient modes of transportation but in my opinion the best way to go would be public transportation. To begin with comparing the price of gas to a 2.75 fair shows how you can save, depending on your schedule of course. Comparing traffic and being able to find parking, the train or bus would be a better option. Like everything there can always be a downside to whichever mode you choose. For instance, when taking the train or bus you would always like to prepare for the worst. Delays, construction, and even missing your ride can lead to longer travel time that one may not be ready for. But this ties in to the New York culture, you adapt and you find the next best solution whether it’s taking a different train, bus, or just jumping in a cab.

  17. New York City’s use of the subway system is notorious for a wide array of reasons. However, if one were to really analyze the advantages and disadvantages of living in NYC, it would have to be said that the addition of the subway system is one of its most prominent benefits, despite the drawbacks the subway system undergoes from time to time. As a subway commuter and longtime resident of the city, the MTA has allowed I and many others to travel to other parts of the urbanscape that would otherwise be inaccessible without the use of a car. In addition, the use of the subway also adds to the experience of living here through the provision of providing social opportunities and architectural walkthrough experiences that genuinely connect an individual to the livelihood and energy of NYC. In terms of disadvantages, the subway system isn’t always the cleanest. And in extreme situations, like the pandemic going on today, can allow for the spread of a virus to travel much quicker since a large amount of people utilize the transport system.
