MTEC3230 – Mixed Reality for Immersive Worlds

This course will explore the new frontier of virtual, augmented and mixed reality across various professional uses and tools. Students will experiment with designing and developing game-based and interactive projects employing the latest AR, VR, and other reality capture-oriented devices. Students will learn the fundamentals of experiential design, Unity 3D development, VR art creation, and critical thinking in the context of storytelling and content creation specific to these emerging forms. Students will work in small teams on collaborative projects with the latest head-mounted and sensor technology.

Game Design and Media Skills Lab

This 3 hour Lab consists of a series of workshops that offer supportive instruction and training in a verity of software programs, digital tools, and platforms. Specifically, we will be s working with WordPress, Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere, After Effects, Audition, and Unity. These workshops are introductions to the programs and tools for digital imaging, graphics, video, sound, and interactive design and are designed to foster a culture of collaboration and sustainable learning communities. Students will be expected to complete a series of guided assignments that cultivate digital skill sets as well as conceptual frameworks, which lend themselves to interactive storytelling and game studies. Active participation in class is required as well as timely completion of assignments. Students will be maintaining Open Lab portfolio blogs in which they will post all assignments. Students are also required to reflect on each post and discuss in writing their ideas, and challenges in completing the assignment. This is a portfolio-based class and in order to complete the course successfully, students are required to have a completed online portfolio and to have actively participated in critiques and class challenges.

MTEC1101 Emerging Media Foundation, FA2018

This course is an introduction to emerging, interactive multi-media technology with a focus on interdisciplinary, project-based, cooperative learning. Students will be immersed in the protocols and processes of emerging and interactive media design, including: idea development, research, documentation, presentation, prototyping, and production, which will serve them in the face of rapid changes in technology. Students will explore basic theoretical and applied concepts of audio, visual, haptic, immersive, sensory and interaction design through creative group projects, visiting professionals, field trips and online documentation of their work.

MTEC1005 Physical Computing Skills, SP2019

The goal of this course is to allow students to design and build a complete physical computing system. With intensive work on the fundamentals of electronics hardware and software design, students will work with components such as LED, potentiometer, photocell, speaker, servo motor, and the Arduino microcontroller development platform. The course culminates with integration and demonstration of all components to building a fully human-interactive system. Throughout the course there will be emphasis on perspectives that balance engineering practice and aesthetic design.

MTEC 2210 Game Design and Interactive Media, SP2019

This course offers a cross-disciplinary foundation for the design of games and interactive multi-media technology for artists, designers and technologists. Students will learn human-centered design principles and apply these methodologies to collaborative team-based projects across web, mobile and games. Using case studies, brainstorming processes, and rapid analog and digital prototyping, students learn design thinking and problem-solving techniques to enhance usability, incorporate sensory experience, influence perception, increase appeal, and make more effective interactive design decisions.

A space to create & playtest digital experiences. Come make video games, interactive art, VR/AR worlds, and literally anything else you can think of in room V-314 (Voorhees Hall).
