Assignment 4-Jennifer Heras

According to Walter Gropius, what was lacking in the art of the past was the creativity and connection an artist had with his work. Many artists were misled to believe that art is a profession which can be mastered by study but that isnt the case at all.  School can only provide an understanding and thorough knowledge in art so it can help generate new ideas but it can not teach students how to produce art because that depends on the talent of the individual who creates it. Gropius also emphasized on the idea of being one with everything because it produces creative art with a deeper meaning instead of a creation that is mechanalized. Mechanized work is meaningless because you’re just creating something with no form and when we’re surrounded by meaningless art, society becomes disordered. Because society will continue to believe they are isolated from everything and everyone. Everywhere they look at will not have purpose, it will not allow them to connect with something and what that does is make people enslaved to the idea that they just have to follow along with what is when there’s more to life. Everything and everyone around us has a purpose but that doesn’t mean we should be isolated with them. LászlĂł Moholy-Nagy has brought an enormous expansion on typography, the film, and the radio. The importance of typography is the communication it has with the person viewing it. Typographers called for clarity, conciseness, precision; for more articulation, contrast, tension in the color and black-and-white values of a typographic page. It’s important for type and photo to work together to communicate to the viewer its meaning. Nowadays we see type displayed in many ways, some even have images inside the letters. I think it’s important as artists, to keep in mind that we should always create with meaning. To create something where others can relate to what you’re trying to convey instead of creating without meaning or because of the money.

Jennifer heras assignment 2

Language is a method of human communication that is either spoken or written. We have several different types of languages all around the world. “Writing helps gives form to the spoken language” (Lupton Miller”). Its different from communication because depending on how you express yourself or the conversation you are having with someone else, it lets the other person know what your trying to say. If you dont communicate your point in a clear way, it will be difficult for someone else to understand. there are many different ways to communicate with one another. For example we can communicate through hand gestures, facial expressions, symbols, and even numbers. Language also plays a big role in design because there is always a message behind their work.

Symbols are related to language because we remember the name that refers to the image being shown. For example if we see an image of a tree, we automatically think of the name that we have associated it with. The thing is theres many different languages and the way we might interpret it in one country might not be the same way in another. We see symbols everywhere we go because it gives us direction and we automatically know what they mean. For example the road sign with a deer indicates deers tend to cross by often so we should be alert when driving. The Saussure reading says “I propose to retain the word sign [signe] to designate the “whole and to replace concept and sound-image respectively by [signifie] and signifier[signifiant]; the last two terms have the advantage of indicating the opposition that separates them from each other and from the whole of which they are parts”. From what I understood this text means that when we communicate we can either explain our point in parts or directly get to the point in a short amount of words. Im not sure whether I’m correct or not because I did have some difficulty understanding this article.

According to the facts and details from the text of the short essay by luton miller, back in the days they would create a symbol such as a stone with an “x” in the middle and that would signify a sheep and on the side of that they would draw 5 other smaller stones to let the person know they’ve counted 5 sheeps. So I believe this technique can bring up similar ideas to designers. Maybe it can spark up ideas such as design symbols that mean more than just an object.

assignment 1b-jennifer heras

According to the authors, design is something that constantly changes throughout time and how everyone defines it in different ways. “Techniques change and new materials are discovered, and with every innovation the problem arises again and the form of the object may change”. A lot of artists spend time thinking how they can solve a problem or how can they can design something but  rarely do they ask why. It also speaks about how art can be visible yet invisible because there seems to be a separation between the people and art. Art Is everywhere yet not to many people stop to think the purpose of the design or who may have created or thought of such style. With so many things changing its important to be clear on the message you want to show to the consumer or client. Designers should have an open mind and be able to rise up to the challenges of our society like in the twentieth century.

What distinguishes all fields of art and design from each other is based on how they view the situation and how they choose to communicate it. As time goes by technology advances more and some people might choose different types of methods to design. Its important for artists and designers to be concerned about the social changes in the world so they can be more open minded and look for ways in which they can contribute through their art. When you look back at work done in the twentieth century, you can see the issues that were going on at that time and how every artist chose to convey that.

Technology has become very important for artists and designers because they can easily spread their work all around the world and be able to get inspired from others as well. Not only that but it helps artists and designers communicate with each other a lot more quicker. They also have easier access to tools online. BUT with that can also come “criticism”. For example artists will have to be a lot more careful with the message they are putting out  because now that almost everyone can view it, not everyone will agree. It can become a way for others to get a sense on how you think and view the worlds problems. A designer can be responsible for this problem because they should find it a “duty” to go out of there way and explore new ideas, new opinions, and see what can arise from them. Being able to express yourself through art and design is very important because it can say so little yet impact a change in the world.Â
