Assignment 3

The artists presented in the three readings present their different approaches when it comes to the future of art, and what different technologies hold. Their work can collectively be termed as the futuristic manifesto. According to the three authors, the future is endowed with speedy technologies that will deliver art to the world within a short period. Time and space are the possibilities of the future. The future of simultaneous implementations is what the authors envision. As technology will play the role of speedy art, the authors are optimistic that they will be propped to the stars.

The art and design that would follow is one of promise. As the artists flourish in their skill set, they anticipate a future that is constructive and creative and nature.  They anticipate a future in which they will be innovators, more like modern-day engineers. In their collective thought of the future, the artists share in the common views of a technology that will help shape art and design. They also share in the common view that artists are the future creators and innovators. Despite their common perception of the future, they hold different views on how the future will be. Filippo Tomaso talks of beauty that is characterized by struggles. This is not what the other artists foresee. They see a future of splendor and beauty.

Artists are creators of the future. Even in their pieces of work, they normally have the future engraved in their art pieces. Since they are creators, they can be termed as engineers. This is the first statement that is true in the read pieces. Technology is a catalyst for speedy artistic growth. This is the second factual statement. Despite the truth, the mention of the fact that beauty exists in the struggle is problematic, as humanity cannot achieve.

Maisha Khan Assignment 2

Language is a structured system of communication that can be described as having a word associated with an object or something that is being done. Language is different from communication in multiple different aspects. Language relies on verbal and non-verbal codes to transfer information whilst communication is an exchange of messages between two or more individuals. Language plays a predominant role in design. In design, visual forms of language are used to communicate in the form of colors, shapes, typefaces, icons, illustrations, and more.

Symbols and iconography directly correlate to language in a multitude of aspects. Symbols and iconography relate to language in the sense that many visualizations during early forms of human cultures used symbols and iconography to communicate and articulate thoughts. One of the most important symbols throughout history are symbols that represent numbers. Referring to the Lupton-Miller reading, it states that many early representations of numbers show that the structure behind a culture’s verbal number sequence is directly correlated with their choice of symbols.

Signs are not something that combines just a name and a thing. Signs are a concept of something paired with a symbol that projects that concept in your brain whenever you think or write that symbol. According to the Saussure reading, these symbols are “ sound-images” which are not purely physical but leave a psychological imprint, leaving an impression on our senses. In the Saussure reading, signs are explained to have two key components: the signifier and the signified. Broken down, the signifier is basically the “sound-image” mentioned earlier, and the signified is the concept behind the sign. These three components are employed in general communication and graphic communication in the sense that we understand certain signs mean certain things and portray certain concepts only because the relationship between the two components (signifier and signified) in which make up a sign are agreed upon.

Both the Saussure reading and the Lupton-Miller reading are eye-opening especially when it comes to signs and the human psyche. These texts really provoke ideas for new design strategies; especially the Saussure reading. After reading both the texts, one can infer that we can manipulate signs or symbols to leave a certain kind of psychological imprint or impression on the viewer. Having the ability to do this is immensely beneficial to a designer as they can essentially lead their audience in whichever direction they want.

Maisha Khan – Assignment 1b

The role that design should play in the world today is to communicate the client’s message in terms of formal coherence. Designers in the 1960s took the notion of turning subjectivity into objectivity and emotions into neutrality. Designers today still follow this realm with the post-modern outlook that brought impossibilities of neutrality and objectivity. The field of design is more in tune with having a clear working method in simple terms we think is the truest, that is up to date with the world today and having to solve problems as well. Times are always changing, and as designers, we must adapt to the new world of art and new problems that arise within that period.

As designers today we are communicators to inform the public of some new development in some fields. As we understand not only the design element but understand about printing, techniques that are used, and colors that indicate a specific meaning to the viewer as well. We can say designers hold way more value as being the “artist of today,” not simply because of the scientific scope like other occupations but the idea of adaptation to what the society demands with a stylistic approach that is constantly changing. Since the content change, we must dive into the world of unsolvable theoretical questions to look further into the future concerns to shape the upcoming “new world.” Just as designers in the early twentieth century rose to the difficulties of their societies, so can we take on the complexities of the rising millennium.

Technology played a crucial part in shaping the design profession because images before were all hand-drawn or painted, now reproduction is so much easier and faster. As of today, technology has advanced throughout the years creating software applications such as Adobe and other application for creating most of the designs we have today. We have mixed the ancient way of sketching and painting with technology to advance the design we create to pertain to the world of technology we live in. Issues that were presented was authorship, universality, and social responsibilities, that are key to the avant-garde ideology, that surrounds the future of the unknown.
