Assignment 3 – Briana Burton

I think these author ‘s were predicting that the future of art would be based on technology that would enhance the creative process in a fast and productive way. One author spoke about previous art forms that were abstract where the lines and shapes were less obvious to the common eye. Now, with technology lines and grids are used more and easier to see. As artist evolve overtime, some adapt to the new technologies and shape the world of art as it is known today.

El Lissitzky, who produced influential work during the 1920s was concerned about the changes that would be made with material used in his time and the same material used in the advanced technology world/digital world. He thought that technology would continue to evolve as time goes on. He said that “the idea that moves the masses today is called materialism.” This has brought up the question of how technology will be used in the future.

Rodchenko and Lissitzky both believed in the idea of constructivism. Lissitzky’s idea on technology is that though it has evolved it is still based on the original idea. I believe that Rodchenko is also saying technology is evolving. However, Marinetti believed in the idea of futurism. He made comparisons about the past and the future but seems to embrace the future. He mentioned key aspects about futurism such as car, ships and violence. He wrote in his manifesto of futurism “We declare that the splendor of the world has been enriched by a new beauty: The beauty is speed.”

According to the authors Ferdinand and Lupton-Miller some people believe that language is only a naming process. Ferdinand further went on to say that the linguistic sign unites a concept and a sound image which is the psychological impression that is a mental picture captured in our minds. The words we speak are made up of letter sounds. Language has many characteristics. It is one of the systems of expression and deemed as the most complicated of all. It is different from communication in general because language is inherited from generation to generation based on traditions. Language plays a very important role in design because graphics and symbols were used to recreate what was being said. Graphics were drawn using sticks, stones, beads and much more. Without language we would not be able to communicate with each other.

Word symbols are a part of the creation of language. It is not entirely made up of random choices and is the principle that links the signifier and the signified. Signifiers and the signified are a part of the sign system. They are components used to create statements. The signifier is the component used to create the graphic and the signified is the thought process and concept in graphic communication. It is stated that “the linguistic sign is arbitrary and has two characteristics since the beginning of time.”

The fact that language is universal and has many components, makes it possible to create different forms of language. I can create new designs using the present technologies to create design that shows the ongoing progress of the different aspects of communication. The archaic numbering system shows us that language and the design process are connected because the language consists of people counting and the design process is the thought process of creating what is being said. The design of the numbering system has evolved over the years based on cultures. There are different principles when it comes to the numbering system such as ordering and grouping. The principle of ordering consists of one on one correlation between symbols and the objects that are being counted. While the principle of grouping puts groups of signs in smaller categories.

Armstrong and Munari wrote about designers and how designs have evolved today. Both authors agreed that designers aim to please their customers. In the past, designers did not care to brand, sign their work, or publish information but, designers today have transformed into the 20th century to build businesses and cater to a wider variety of clients. According to Munari a designer is a planner with an aesthetic sense. One who tries to solve the problems of his/her clients to make the design what it needs to be.

Since design has evolved, technology plays an important role in shaping design professionals. Although this is so, the fundamentals from the 1900s design process is still an important part which is used to create and enhance a wide range of designs in limited time for many more clients. Technology helps the designer to adjust and re-create designs quickly for their clients. We depend on technology to assist us in all aspects of our life. It helps us with productivity, time management and enhancing many things we do. Today’s designers may use a Wacom tablet to design and produce it in short space of time. While a design in the past would be done on a canvas or book and take a longer time. Designers must be able to be creative enough and adjust to the changing times we are in.

Designers are important pieces of the puzzle within the creative occupation. They have great imagination and know the different types of art forms and can visualize and design products from start to finish. Other creative occupations may be able to create only certain aspect of the art form. Therefore, designers should concern themselves with the fundamentals and principles which they believe in, because they are at risk. According to Munari, there are confusions about what art should be and there is no distinction between the different types of arts lately. Designers must preserve all that they know about what art should be.
