FAMILY RESOURCES FAIR- Hungerford Public School, April 2017

This health fair was for the parents of children with developmental disabilities. We educated the parents on alternatives in brushing techniques for children with ASD, Down Syndrome, etc. Each parent got pamphlets on specific disorders and how it can effect the oral cavity. Some parents were given samples of three sided brushes and/or bite blocks. Each item given was first demonstrated to the parent and then the parent had to demonstrate the technique taught on a stuffed animal with teeth.

THADDEUS STEVENS P.S. 81- Spring Wellnes Fair- May 2017

A group of my classmates and I spoke to elementary school aged children about the importance of tooth brushing and rinsing. We had each child demonstrate brushing techniques on a doll.  The children really enjoyed that especially since they got a goodie bag with oral supplies at the end!

GREATER NEW YORK DENTAL MEETING- Give Kids a Smile. Nov. 2017, Jacob Javits Convention Center.

2017 Greater NY Dental Meeting

City Tech’s Singing Group

My classmates and I collaborated with Colgate ® to provide dental education to Primary and Secondary Aged students. The event included 4 stations: Basic screenings, Nutrition education, Oral Cavity Education and Demonstrative tooth brushing station.  My group picked several songs to sing to the children who visited out station. We also played a game of Q&A’s with the children. The children laughed at our singing but it was ok, since they all seemed to walk away humming the tones of the song we sang. That was a mark of success to me!

RONALD EDMUNDS LEARNING CENTER- Give Kids a Smile. Feb. 2018, M.S. 113 Ronald Edmunds Learning Center

Day One

Day Two

In Feb. 2018 my class participated in a two day event to provide school aged children with education on oral care. One the first day we gave a brief lecture to students then conduct an open forum with the students about the importance of oral home care, and applied 5% sodium fluoride varnish to select students. Day two we dealt with children with developmental disabilities. I was very apprehensive to work with this population and assumed it was going to be very challenging. I was happily wrong. Most of the students were non verbal, but they each had a way of expressing themselves that led me to believe that they were excited to have us there and no student seemed as if they were uncomfortable when we were brushing their teeth or just talking to them about their smiles. I absolutely loved this experience.

SECOND DISTRICT- Colgate “Bright Smiles, Bright Future”. Feb. 2018, Chuck E. Cheese.

My classmates and I were performing Basic Screenings on children and reporting our findings to the Dentist and Dental Students also working at the event.

HEAD START EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM-Coney Island, NY

For public health my classmates and I went to a Head Start Program, Pre-K for children of low-income familes, in Brooklyn to educate kids about their brushing their teeth and why it is important to take care of their teeth. We utilized the Oral-B® “Genna the Giraffe” video to help show kids how to take care of their teeth, what foods to eat, what foods to avoid, and also to not be afraid of the Dentist.

SERVICE LEARNING PROJECT- Public Health. March 2018, Cooke Grammar School

Cooke Grammar School

Cooke Grammar School

For public health my fellow students and I were assigned to do community service that was oral health related.
We went to a school for children with developmental disabilities, the disorders ranged from Autism Spectrum Disorder, Down Syndrome, ADHD, and Asperger’s to name a few. We showed them a video about brushing their teeth and played an interactive game using a poster board that had “bad food” and” good food”. We broke up into smaller groups and demonstrated to each student how to brush their teeth. At the end of the visit we gave out some samples to the children and hoped they were able to gain some knowledge about their oral cavity. It was great to have the children be so engaged and happy to have us there. It was also fantastic to hear their Aides, and teacher praise us for our work, and ability to connect to the children. I think we made a big impact!
