Every year, for one week in March, dental assistants were acknowledged and recognized.

I volunteered as a dental assistant in 2006. It was then that I confirmed within myself that I want to be involved in the dental field.

Give Kids a smile Program. Brooklyn President: Mr. Eric Adams and Oral Health Committee Chair : Dr. Reneida Reyes showed their support

According to the CDC, nearly 1 in 4 children under the age of 5 already has cavities. On February 19th 2015, I joined hands with members of the American Dental Association, American Dental Hygiene Association and other dental team members to provide oral health exams to young children and educate the public about the prevention of Early Childhood Caries.

IMG_0053Each child was given a bag filled with educational tools such as “healthy teeth, healthy me” DVDs, tooth erupting sequence pamphlets, and coloring books, which would familiarize them with the dental staff, procedures, and instruments used.

 Head Start Program

IMG_2151 Since the year 1965, Head Start has been providing children under 5 in low-income families with education, health, social and other services. I was ecstatic when our school was asked to volunteer our services in teaching the children about oral hygiene, which included how to brush, and how cavities and plaque forms. Each child, under the consent of their parents, was given an oral examination as well as an application of fluoride varnish.

Group Mission: Orthodontic Oral Hygiene Care

IMG_2027

At an orthodontic office in Brooklyn New York, patients were educated about plaque formation, cavities, white spot lesions and how to effectively brush and floss. Active participation was encouraged. Each IMG_2012patient was given a baggy of preventative products to use while undergoing their orthodontic therapy.

Televisions, laptops and typodonts were used as visual displays to show the patients the formation of plaque, how to brush and how to use interdental aids. Surveys were given out before and after the presentation to measure the patients’ understanding of oral hygiene.
