Faculty Workshop Spring 2014

Organization

Content can be organized in a variety of ways, yet one technique is to make an outline. For instance, you may create an outline containing your contact information, lecture notes, external resources, and assignments. Prioritize these elements into from an order of importance for your students.  Under each of these categories, you can break them up into separate but related elements.  Arranging content with your students in mind provides a more efficient website experience.

Aaron Marcus states:

Principles of User Interface Design
There are three fundamental principles involved in the use of the visible language.
  • Organize: provide the user with a clear and consistent conceptual structure
  • Economize: do the most with the least amount of cues
  • Communicate: match the presentation to the capabilities of the user.

A metaphor that could be used to develop a model for website organization could be a syllabus.  If you are building a website, you could have one page that outlines basic course information such as contact information, course title and number, meeting time and location. Another page could be the course outline, and the last page could be a course calendar.

What’s important is to use language and terms that your users, such as your students, can easily understand.
