NYCCT Spring Wellness Fair 2019

During second semester, Spring 2019, our class worked in groups on a table clinic poster research project. My group chose to research the relationship between probiotics and the oral microbiome. We learned a lot about the extensive variety of bacteria that compose the oral microbiome, and how probiotics can be introduced to the diet to maintain homeostasis. We presented our topic at the school’s Spring wellness fair and deeply enjoyed our audience’s interest and informing them about this topic. A student won the raffle for a grand prize Oral-B electric toothbrush after listening to our presentation! Below is a link to the brochure that we distributed to complement our poster board.

Herpes Zoster

In Fall 2019, I took a course in pathology, during which I learned about many clinical dental/oral manifestations including bone diseases, bone tumors, mucous membrane diseases, odontogenic cysts, odontontogenic tumors, and soft tissue tumors. I was assigned a research topic, herpes zoster (shingles), which I am glad to know more about in detail as this has become more prevalent due to the baby boomers currently falling into the age range that herpes zoster is more likely to occur.

Lymphadenopathy

In Winter 2018, I took a course in histology and created a PowerPoint presentation regarding lymphadenopathy, and presented the topic to my class. The presentation can be found via the link below. I have become even more familiar with lymphadenopathy due to my experience seeing school clinic patients. During assessment of all patients, we provided cancer screening, which included examination of lymph nodes in the head and neck region.

In Summer 2018, I took a course in pharmacology, and learned an extensive amount in a short period regarding pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, and dental management of patients with pharmacological considerations. I took part in a group project which covered the topic of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and contraceptives. I also conducted research on an over-the-counter supplement, Elderberry, and learned that it is a primary ingredient in at least one brand of periodontal dressing. Dental Management of HIV Positive Patients

During first semester, Fall 2017, I experienced the Greater New York Dental Meeting for the first time. I had an exceptional experience; all the presenters and vendors were well organized and easy to navigate with the provided floor plan. We had an assignment, which was to analyze a dental hygiene related clinic table poster research that we found to be most interesting. The poster research that I selected was titled Dental Management of Patients Who are HIV Positive, by Nikita Thomas, DMD of New York Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital. I learned a lot about specific clinical manifestations in relation to HIV. A link is included below for a more detailed write up for this assignment.
