PHILOSOPHY STATEMENT

My philosophy is to provide healing, nurturing, love, and care for those who are sick. I seek to maintain my skills and competency through a continuous commitment to professional development and continued education, in order to provide the best evidence based care to my patients. My primary duties as a registered nurse are to provide competent, empathic, compassionate, and holistic care to my patientā€™s to the best of my ability. I promise to respect the dignity and individuality of all in my care and to support and honor their choices and preferences whenever possible.
In addition, as indicated by the theorist Jean Watson, I believe in developing a helping-trust relationship with clients. When trust is achieved, oneā€™s ability to deliver care and assess client status becomes so much easier. Something as simple as listening to a client as they express themselves can have a positive impact on their well-being. Some people quest for someone to listen but the only way communication would arise is if a trusting nurse-client relationship is developed.
My main goals as a nurse is to educate and empower my patientā€™s through knowledge to help them make inform decisions and accept full responsibility for their healthcare needs. I vow to uphold the ethical codes of conduct of the American Nurses Association and I will do all in my power to elevate the standard of my profession and with loyalty I will devote myself to the welfare of those committed to my care.

The Brooklyn Historical Society – second visit

The Brooklyn historical Society, 128 Pierrepont Street, Brooklyn, NY 11201, September 24, 2013 at 1:30p.m.

Today, my second visit to the Brooklyn Historical Society as it celebrates its 150th anniversary. It ā€œis at a magical crossroads, where history meets the futureā€. The architectural design of the building is truly magnificent and reminded me of our past history and of those who have left their marks on society.
The exhibits were located on the second floor. As I ascended the stairways to the second floor of this old building, the boarded stairways squeaked under our weight reminding me I am stepping into the past and comparing it to the present.
The exhibit I found most interesting featured an individual named Gabriel Furman born in 1800-1854 was a lawyer, politician, New York State senator, and historian of early Brooklyn, New York. He wrote on geographical and historical events concerning the town of Brooklyn, on Long-Island in the 1824. His journals were fascinating and mesmerizing.
As a nursing student I found the topic on the disease Cholera and the use of opium and addiction very interesting. It is very sad to read of a man so prominent and powerful is his time overcome by addiction and loneliness .Many people in our communities are suffering from drug addictions. I will explore the Cholera disease and the use of opium as it affects our communities today.

Blog #2

Blog #2.Ā  Bellevue Hospital Center,Ā  462 1st Avenue, New York, NY 10016, Tuesday, September 17, 2013, 08:30am ā€“ 12:40p.m.

Today, the second day of my clinical visit to Bellevue Hospital Center I had the opportunity to work with patients in the Asthma/chest/Pulmonary Clinic. Ā I had a very exciting and informative day working with patients affected by these diseases. I learned that Direct Observe Therapy, were offered to patients, who are non-compliant with taking their medications. These patients would come into the clinics and medications are administered to them there.

Further, I learned that Asthma/chest/Pulmonary Clinic at Bellevue, share rooms with patients that are affected in the World Trade Center blasts. I was told they have their own doctors and staff who care for them.Ā  Now, this bit of information was truly an eye opener for me. Ā Patients were taught the symptoms to look out for, causes that can trigger asthma attacks and some medications used for treatment.

There was a 52 year old female Ms. J. T. diagnosed with asthma, come in for follow-up treatment and teachings on medication newly prescribed by her doctor.Ā  She was taught how to use her asthma inhaler along with the Flo spacer and side effects to look out for with the medication prescribed. Ā I learned that one of our most effective diagnostic tools is listening, letting the patients tell you about their lifestyle, habits, activities and symptoms. Moreover, education is the key to teach patients and their families how to identify and treat symptoms when they first appear. I had a great experience and anxiously awaiting more opportunities to be involved in helping and addressing the needs of this community.
