Part II.
In some cases the word “global” means to get around or pass around. It can also mean to travel or to move to another location. People often refer to “global” communities in terms of the internet and different subsets of it. E.g Black Twitter.
Part III
Global Communities
What is a global community? To begin with, what is a community? It is more than just an organization of people that live within the same area. It could be people that live within the same region, people that are of the same ethnicity, and even people of the same religion.
When we think of the word global we often think about the earth and the people that make it the global community that it is today. Being a part of an ethnic community means, being among a group of people that share the same beliefs, history, tribes or nation. An example of an ethnic community that share the same experiences and history is the African American community. Their ancestors were ripped from their motherland and forced to come to the United States to work, where they experienced racism in the form of being enslaved, and segregated, among other injustices. Whereas now this historic experience has brought the African American people closer as a group in order to fight for their freedom and rights. “African Americans had more than enough of prejudice and violence against them. They, along with many whites, mobilized and began an unprecedented fight for equality that spanned two decades” (History.com Editors).
Another community that exists within the global world is the religious community, which is mainly made up of people who share the same beliefs and views. To begin with there are many religious communities out there in the world. They tend to be Monotheistic or Polytheistic. Christianity is a monotheistic religionwhose followers believe, and follow one God. They may carry many different versions of their Holy Book, but they all read the same book and have roughly the same views. This is what creates religion and makes it a community.
Communities have various types of people and each of them carries their own traits that makes them different and unique to each other. But what makes a Global community are the people who are a part of the many nations. We all share few things in common that connects us all in many ways. Religiously, economically and even politically.

In the photos above are examples of how African Americans are a part of a global community. In these images they are a part of the Civil Rights Movement fighting for their rights and freedom. These photos show how African Americans were segregated from everyone else because they were different. They also show how religion is also a part of a community and demonstrates how families and people of different denominations can come together as one. Communities come in many different ways and what connects them are the shared traits that they all carry.

Part II:
The word diet has many meanings that people didn’t realize. In general, the definition of diet is the way we eat in everyday life. For example, the majority of people eat anything they enjoy eating or some people restrict certain food items such as meats and dairy. Diet can also mean something medical related such as diet prescriptions for a patient to add, remove or limit certain foods that they eat. Lastly, people use diet in their lives to describe a certain way to eat to lose weight and to live a healthier lifestyle. An example of this could be becoming vegan, vegetarian or any other diets that promote weight loss.
Part III:
When it comes to dieting, a community that uses this word is the fitness community. In the fitness community, dieting is something that people do when they want to lose weight and live a healthy life. People in this community have created multiple different forms of diets that promote weight loss. There are many different diets and examples of these are keto, vegan and vegetarian.
Some people are restricted from eating certain things because of their health. One example of a restriction can be limiting sodium intake to reduce the chances of having
cardiovascular disease. Doctors restrict people from eating certain things and advise people to go to the gym for exercise. One of the things that people in the fitness community is consuming dietary supplements such as diet pills or drinking meal replacement shakes. People consume diet pills because it can reduce their appetite and help people burn off fat. People drink meal replacement shakes because these products contain nutrients that can boost metabolism and reduce your appetite.
Diet is used in everyday life and the people that use it the most is the fitness community. Diet can be used in medical terms such as prescriptions for someone or it can be used to describe what a person eats.
Sustainable
[Part 1] Sustainable (Adjective)-1: capable of being sustained
2 a: of, relating to, or being a method of harvesting or using a resource so that the resource is not depleted or permanently damaged sustainable techniques, sustainable agriculture
b: of or relating to a lifestyle involving the use of sustainable methods, sustainable society. From Merriam-Webster.
[Part 2] Sustainable (Adjective)-Looking at the long-term. The ability to achieve ongoing economic prosperity while protecting the natural resources of the planet. For example, Sustainable agriculture. A more general use of the word is something that lasts a long time. The average person would use sustainability to describe a restaurant or store, complimenting the way they procure their items or ingredients. It can also mean being “green” as in being environmentally aware.
[Part 3] Sustainable communities are based upon people and businesses being socially, economically and environmentally aware of the impact they create. Lina Romasanta my perspectives in hospitality professor always says that tourism is the umbrella or “mother ship” of the hospitality industry. People travel and spend money, which is good for business, but people most of the time tourist are too swept up with the sight of a new area that they don’t realize that they can be causing harm to the area and its people. There needs to be more Responsible travel to natural areas that sustains the well-being of the local people and the nature around it. It doesn’t mean that you have to tip toe where ever you go and be so overly cautious that it ruins your trip but perform more tiny acts of ecotourism and we can sustain the beautiful nature we travel for.
Sustainability is also important in tourism for economic reasons. One the most important parts of owning a hotel or restaurant is the customers, and the best kind of customer is a tourist. Tourists travel for adventure, business, pleasure, family, education and religious reasons but mainly for food. What sustainable tourism means, economically, in the hotel industry is the same as in the food industry, Hotel managers and restaurant owners want people booking rooms and people going out to eat in a new country or place. It doesn’t matter how far a customer travel to get to your business, they are mostly likely there to spend money, and if they come from far away, they spend a lot, and that’s always a good thing. This keeps a consistent amount of profit being made for your establishment. I’ve had firsthand experience being a “tourist”, I remember when I was about 12 years old me, my sister, my cousins and their parents went to Washington D.C. We first got our stuff into the hotel after that we were outside the entire time. We went to Museums and all the monuments and we ate out the entire time. I haven’t realized until when I started my hospitality classes that, that one simple trip we took meant so much to the hospitality industry because traveling is when people tent to spend the most money and as long as your establishment is located in a popular part of the world you are sure to have tons of customers. Sustainability makes the economic world go around and as long as we have a constant amount of food and tourist creating money, there would always be a source of growth in the industry and our communities. It’s exactly how companies would grow to become chains because in like the Hotel industry brand names are very important because that’s something anybody can notice no matter where they go. Such as, if you were to go to Peru and you see a Marriott Hotel you are most likely want to choose that hotel because you know of the name Marriott. And that’s what most tourists do they go to places they know but they still try to explore places that they never been before and that just helps grow establishments. That constant amount of tourism makes profits skyrocket, just by relying on people going on a simple vacation.

Essay#1
What is a community? How would you define it? There is no right or wrong answer. Why? Because everyone has a different community. My community differentiates from my co-worker’s community or even my doctor’s. A community to me is the one around you who make you feel safe and comfortable. It could be around where you live, your book club and even your work area. All of these groups of people are communities. And in a majority of communities there are professionals who are there when called upon such as firefighters or cops.
In a community, they can either be big or small. They each hold an atmosphere of professionalism. It’s often found in many areas. One is in a work space. It can be a restaurant, school or just an ordinary office. These small communities give a perfect example of professionals because people here know what they are doing and are able to apply what they know to other students, parents, or employees. All make a living doing what they learned and pursue their careers in these fields. My community needs this in order to teach our future leaders, politicians and doctors. These foundations are just the first step. And in every work space there’s a different way one acts professional to another worker around them. For example when I work as a waitress I not only act in a respectful and polite manner in front of customers but my boss and manager as well. I don’t rush a customer to order food or scream at them if I get frustrated. This is a huge way of me being a professional. I do it in order for them to see that I’m serious about my job and know what I’m doing. This might later in the future give me a promotion for being on task.
Professionals carry themselves in a certain way. Depending on their surroundings many will be respectful and patient such as doctors, nurses and dentist. Others carry themselves in a huge business like matter such as confident and ‘don’t question me’ attitude such as a CEO or a lawyer. Not every professional act the same in the behavioral aspect. Every community behaves differently with those around them. I see this in the restaurant I work in. The chefs all aware of their surroundings and know what to wear and what they need to do to get ready for dinner service.I know I have to get my station ready once I get to work. Get cups, straws etc. It’s an instinct now for me to behave and act the way I do at work. Which is being respectful, patient and try to never be rude to a customer no matter the day I had.
Professionals are in different areas of work. Not just in office cubicles. They can be found in hospitals, a kitchen, a hotel and even in your local deli. These communities aren’t just in one specific city or town. They are always around you and these professional communities will continue to grow. For example, if you need a doctor, one can download an app and access a doctor for any questions or concerns to one’s own health. Technology is helping in the growth of our professional communities in today’s society. Professionals will continue to be needed in our communities in the far future. No matter the technological advances.

adjective
US /ɪnˈdʌs·tri·əl/
of or related to industry, or having a lot of industry and factories:
industrial output
It’s an industrial city
An industrial park is a special area for factories and businesses.
(Definition of industrial from the Cambridge Academic Content Dictionary © Cambridge University Press)
industrial
noun BUSINESS, FINANCE & ECONOMICS specialized
UK /ɪnˈdʌs.tri.əl/ US /ɪnˈdʌs.tri.əl/
a company whose main business is producing goods:
He owns a series of industrials across the US and beyond.
First Known Use of industrial
Adjective
1600, in the meaning defined at sense 1
Noun
1831, in the meaning defined at sense 1a
Part 2:
The word Industrial means working with machines to produce goods. For example, people work with forklifts, cement trucks, conveyor belts, sewing machines, shredders, crushers, etc are considered industrial workers. Real people would use the word industrial by saying the city of Pittsburgh was once considered an industrial city because they produced steel.
Part 3:
The word Industrial comes from the Latin language “industria” means having a business in industry/factories. As a noun, the meaning is producing goods from a factory. The word community means a group of people who share a common interest or live in the same place. Besides the literal definition, the word community has a lot of different meanings because it can be used in many different ways. Some examples are a social media community, a work community, and a support group. The word community relates to industrial because there’s a whole community in Industrial City.
Industrial City is a community in Sunset Park, Brooklyn that has a lot of different communities within it. The communities that makeup Industrial City are food communities, shopping communities, working communities, and also a social gathering community. In the food community, the people working there make you feel very welcome. When going to the food court and you can get all types of food from ice cream to Thai food. In the shopping community, you also feel very welcome because the environment is very friendly. It shows that even though you’re not from the community, you feel like you are part of the community because there are so many shops. Also even though these different communities don’t produce goods in a factory it relates to industrial because there are producing things like food. While there is the professional side of Industrial City there is also a social gathering community that they have which you can do all of these different activities and meet new people. For example, they have flea markets, rooftop films, and little things to do during the holidays. The community that relates to the word industrial is the factory community because they have people working there but they also had factories that people worked in, making goods which is the definition of industrial. In the end, when I go to Industrial City I feel so welcomed even though I don’t live anywhere near there. I feel like I am part of the community.
In conclusion, the word industrial means to make or to produce goods. The word community means to have a common interest or live in the same neighborhood as people. These two words relate to each other because Industrial City once was all factories but now it is more than just factories. It’s a better community because there is not just one community anymore there are multiple that make it up, and even though they’re really aren’t factories any more at Industrial City the word still relates because they keep on producing things that are not from factories.
Part 4:
These photos show Industrial City. They show what Industrial City today is made up of a lot of communities than just one. In the first photo, you just see buildings but inside the buildings, they produce food which even though they are producing materials they are producing something. In the second picture with the other buildings inside they have shops and cafes, they produce goods for people as well. And the map shows all of the places where to go and what you can do while in Industrial city.

PART II
Artisanal is a way some craftsmen used to make easily handmade objects. Simple things like bread and more foods. Basic things that don’t require lots of machinery or workers.
PART III
A community is a variety of people that may live in the same area and/or they have similar interests or hobbies. Everyone is a part of a community they could be a part of one or lots. A community can vary from your hobbies, interests, nationality, job, sexuality and so on. Artisanal is in a community of people with craftsmen talent or anyone who makes things from handmade or traditionally.
In the food wise it could be used by cooks, bakers, people who can make wine or cheese. Artisanal works usually always require less work, employers and training need to get it done. Usually, it’s done by a small business or its a self-employed thing. For example, in a vineyard is sometimes using artisanal way to make their products. Most wines nowadays are made by recipes passed down by generations or handmade. You have to grow grapes and the grapes are then squished until they are all liquid and so on. Not much work has to be put to make wine. It also goes with bakeries, many bakeries make what’s called artisanal bread. The bread that was made with fresh products and easily made. The bread is usually doesn’t have lots of packaging and it’s always up to sale once its fresh out the oven. Not only is it with bread but with other baked goods.
Not only the word can fit in a cooking world, but it could also be in a community of arts and crafts. In various countries in South America, you can always find older people making clay pottery, blankets or any type of clothing out of hand. The word Artisanal in Spanish is “Artesanal” which also means handmade and it has the word art in it. Pottery is made with clay in a wheel, your hands and with a little bit of water. You can either make cups, bowls, plates, jars anything that can come up to your mind. Once you finish shaping it you leave it to dry for a few days. Once it’s dry you can paint it if you wanted, add various colors and images. Which then can be given up for sale. And you will most likely find it in a market or anywhere. The same thing goes with the clothing that’s made by hand. Simple things like gloves, hats, socks, sweater or blankets. All that can be needed is string, yarn but its most importantly based on what you’re making and how big you can be making it. You will see older people making clothes because of past generations that’s what they would be taught. These things like pottery and clothing are made by handmade in most South American countries. And it has probably been passed down by generations and it takes fewer people to make and it will always come from small or self-employed businesses.
Therefore, Artisanal fits in many communities that involves making things by hand or traditionally. It can fit in a food-wise aspect or arts and crafts both make them from scratch or in a way that’s been passed down by generations. All the people like cooks, bakers or craftsmen all have the same interest so it would be considered to be one community.
PART IV
Artisanal Bread is brthe and that’s made freshly everyday. And it may not require lots of workers to be made. It can simply be made by a small run company or a family owned business

Heritage
Part 1
Heritage
1-: property that descends to an heir
2a: something transmitted by or acquired from a predecessor : LEGACY, INHERITANCE
2b: TRADITION
3: something possessed as a result of one’s natural situation or birth
History and Etymology for heritage
Middle English heritage, eritage, borrowed from Anglo-French, from heriter “to inherit, make an heir” (going back to Late Latin hērēditāre “to leave as an inheritance, inherit, make an heir,” from Latin hērēd-, hērēs HEIR entry 1 + -itāre, verb suffix) + -age
Citation: https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/heritage
Part2
Heritage is your background it can be something that’s passed down to you from family members. An example could be that your family is from an African descendant. In West Africa your heritage is passed down to you from generation to generation and it’s your parents duty to keep it up. Another example of heritage is clothing. West African clothing is unique and distinguishable. It’s just another way of letting others know what makes up you and your culture. In West Africa the style of the clothing is passed down from family member to family member.
Part3
We all come from different backgrounds and communities where we inherit our culture. It is our backgrounds and communities that make us who we are. Some communities inherit their clothes and language from their heritage. English is not most West Africans first language. We will have an African dialect as our first language. And most of us will be dressed differently when we go out. We will wear the traditional clothing. As West Africans we use clothes and languages as a way to express our heritage.
West Africans have different heritages that make them unique. We inherit our West African clothing from our culture. Our clothes makes us distinguishable and unique. We inherit them from our ancestors who passed it down to our parents and they passed it on to us. The style of the clothing is passed down. Our clothes express our heritage. That’s how we can express ourselves and show people that we are from West Africa. It binds us together and makes us a community. We celebrate our backgrounds and communities by wearing Kanga and Agbada. Some parts of Africa call it a different name. Kanga and Agbada are what we wear in West Africa during events like weddings, Eid, and at parties. They’re just clothing that you buy to the color of your liking and then they take your measurements and style it the way you want it. The clothing is significant because it distinguishes us from others and you feel like you belong when wearing it. The clothing brings us closer together at events in the sense that if you see someone wearing it you’re going to know that they are part of your community and go up to them and start a conversation.
When some people see Africans talking in languages other than English they assume that they are speaking “African” not realizing that people in different parts of Africa speak different dialects. In Mali we speak Bambara and French. Bambara is taught to you as a little kid. It is passed down from generation to generation. If you happen not to speak Bambara and you are from West Africa it will be hard for you to be a part of the community. You wont fit in with the rest because it’s your heritage and should know it. Your parents should’ve taught you it since you were little. Developing a shared language builds a community. Bambara is a part of our heritage, it’s something that we as West Africans inherit from our families.
A community is a group of people who share the same culture or language. They have something that brings them together. The word heritage and community are related to each other in the sense that they both include people with a common background. In West Africa language and clothes are a big part of your heritage. It lets others know that this is what you represent and also introduces the idea of a community. Heritage brings people together in the same way that communities does.
Part4
I am wearing Agbada, this was during Eid. This is just an example of what West Africans wear to show their heritage.

Real world definition: An heirloom is an item or object that is worthwhile, and has been passed down a family line; monetary value or not. It is a special possession that has belonged to a family for years, and is considered very valuable. An heirloom is handed down from generation to generation- usually passed down by an older member of a family to a younger member within that same family.
Part III
Growing up, I never knew the true meaning of a community. My perception of a community was always positive and in my head it was just a “nice” place where people got along, and supported each other through everything. However, being from the South Side of Queens, I never really got to see that. One of the issues I witnessed most was gang violence, and because of my false perception of what a community was, I didn’t think that gangs were worthy enough of owning anything valuable- turns out, I was wrong. Now that I’m older, I realize that despite all the conflict, gangs are communities too, with their own, unique pieces of treasure.
I went to middle school in South Ozone Park, and plenty of the kids who went there were from East New York, where many of them were Crip. I understood that being Crip meant you were in a gang, but I didn’t really understand what that meant, what you had to do to join, and why it was so important to them. I was only in the 7th grade when one of my classmates had got in trouble for wearing, what seemed to be, a regular, blue beaded necklace that looked like it was hand-made from one of those jewelry kits you get for Christmas. However, it was obvious that it was more meaningful than that, not only because of his earnest response, and how much rage it caused him, but also because he was suspended for it. The necklace meant a lot to him, I just never understood why. I didn’t understand what that necklace meant until I made a gang affiliated friend of my own. This friend of mine expressed to me that being Crip meant brotherhood to him, that is when I recognized that gangs are communities too.
A community isn’t a place, it’s a connection. It is relationships between people who feel some sense of belonging, and can share the same interests whether it be through church, dance, or even social media. This friend of mine, also owned one of these necklaces, they were called crates. This was his community’s heirloom, and that is why my 7th grade classmate was so angry when his were taken from him. These crates are so special to them because they’re passed down from the “big homie” (leader) of the set and are earned by doing missions, like selling drugs, going to other peoples “hood” (territories) and beating people up. It’s considered valuable because when earned, you demand more respect. You’re considered more powerful because they show all the pain you went through. Owning this piece of jewelry, makes my friend proud of who he is, and where he came from; it’s a part of his identity, and that is what heirlooms are all about. And to him, these people were his family, his gang was his community, and his crates were his heirloom.
Part IV
This is a picture of my friends crates. He explained to me that crates never have five beads of the same color in a row. This heirloom is important to him and everyone else who is Crip because it gets passed down to you from a leader, and not everyone owns it.

Part 3
Heritage definitely has a strong impact on a community. The type of community this relates to would be a city, neighborhood, town, a church, a religious group, or even a small group of peers. This has such a big impact because, in these types of communities, you know or meet tenants with such great history of the area and have seen things that have shaped their community and themselves, such as an elderly person who has been living in a distinct little town known for its history.
There are some ways to define heritage in some communities, one being a specific town or neighborhood, where people of the same culture live together and share special memories and cultural history together. An example of a heritage community would be Queens, a borough with loads of culture, where people from many countries all over the world bring their heritage that has been passed down and continue to follow it and share it with everybody else. Another example is a special building or monument that holds special background or history to that place such as the Aztec Pyramids which have been around for as long as 3,000 years. Cities, neighborhoods, and sites like these bring people together and create unity. When talking about heritage, it’s everything that holds a deep meaning behind it. It can be the way a person speaks, the clothes they wear, practices they still follow, a piece of clothing, and customs. They make people proud of where they came from and in a community, people help, support, and care for one another. You can find these types of communities all around the world. The amount of history left with us is more than enough to empower many communities and even build some. Many people see this as a way of living when something is passed down from many generations, you just have to stick with it and try to preserve it and pass it on to the next. Lots of people in a certain environment like to conserve their history and culture no matter what because of its significant meaning. Rich or poor, there’s always a story or memory to tell someone one day. Many people see the heritage in a community as basis for innovation. In a community, certain people like to show their culture and heritage by having religious churches, parks, and art centers around the area. This allows people to come by anytime and observe the culture shown and expand its community and try to bring more people together
There’s an endless amount of different communities with beautiful heritage and culture to share with the world and that’s what makes a community unbreakable and forever admirable. These cultures will forever be passed down to the next generation and will either live on a building, in a person, or in an object.
