Journal #4 The PlayStation Eye! Sensors?

Well, I was originally going to write about the Kinect, but it was already written and I don’t want to repost, so I’ll write about something a little similar to the Kinect. So here is the PlayStation Eye!

The PlayStation Eye is a digital camera device or webcam for the PlayStation 3. It uses computer vision and gesture recognition to process images taken by the camera. This allows people to interact with games using motion and color detection as well as sound through its built-in microphone. The PlayStation Eye is the successor to the Eyetoy that was created for the PS2 in 2003.

Lets talk about the Eye in detail, with sensors being the most important. This means the camera inside will be talked about the most! The PlayStation Eye is able to capture standard video with 60 frames at a 640×480 pixel resolution, and 120 frames at 320×240 pixels. It has been said that the PlayStation Eye has “two times the sensitivity” of the EyeToy, with Sony teaming up with sensor chip partner OmniVision Technologies on a sensor chip design using larger sensor pixels, allowing for better low-light operation. “Sony states that the PlayStation Eye can produce “reasonable quality video” under the illumination provided by a television set.”

The camera features a two-setting adjustable fixed focus zoom lens.The lens can be manually rotated by using the lens barrel. The PlayStation Eye can be set to a 56° field of view (red dot) for chatting/video applications(think Skype), or a 75° field of view (blue dot) for long shot framing in video games that can utilize the PlayStation Eye.

I could write more because there is actually a lot of information about the PlayStation Eye, but i’ll save it for when I write about Controllers and Actuators because I believe the other information ties into both.

Now..random pony gif go!

    I’d love to see you do a compare and contrast to the (level of) capabilities for the PlayStation Eye and the Kinect.

  2. the gifs keep getting better and better. lol

    I feel like the Wii isn’t even in the running anymore!

      It hasn’t been for a long time. In fact, most hardcore gamers consider those who prefer it “casual gamers,” or even “non-gamers.”

      Amazing, no?

    @Gabby, sounds like a plan.
