Journal #8: Case Study (T.E.R.A)

Since most of us want to go into games and each show cased something awesome in the gaming world, figured I’d do the same. Awhile ago came this big shift in a once Pay-to-Play (P2P) game  called The Exiled Realm of Arborea, TERA. Now to my knowledge this kind of thing doesn’t happen often, since games like WoW are pay to play ad end up working out pretty well. So imagine my own surprise as someone who loves a Free-to-Play games that are GOOD, to hear that an awesome game like TERA was going free to play? I was shocked and amazed. (For anyone interested in playing the game the links at the bottom for the site.)

One of the main questions about TERA as it announced it was going free was “how is it going to support itself if is not charging a subscription for the players?” well simple answer is the developers will be performing a move similar to SWTOR, Star Wars The Old Republic) and will be selling 60 day “elite” status subscriptions, and “Premium” memberships. Now while there are obvious advantages that come to mind, the developers also promised there will be content differences such as better items, instead there would be only things such as increased drop rate, and other metagame advantages. No experience advantages, no  damage buffs, players premium and non are on an equal footing. Therefore there’s no pressure to become a premium member.

With this turn of events, perhaps other games will follow the example of T.E.R.A or SWTOR and develop these massively addicting and fun games where the players are treated fairly, and there’s absolutely no pressure to get a premium membership. If so? Then I’m sure things can only get better.
