journal entry 4: inputs of a smartphone

Technology in smartphones change all the time, but there a few things in phones that don’t change. Those things are:

  1. Proximity sensor – Very useful piece of technology in smartphones. This allows the phone to determine the distance between the phone’s screen and the users face. This helps the phone to turn the screen on or off when the user is on a call or not.
  2. GPS – We all know what GPS is, global positioning system. GPS in phones are used for different things. One, help the user get around whether they are driving or just in an area they are new to. Two, helps geotag pictures taken by the user so when a user uploads their pictures to either Facebook or other photo sharing service, the user and others can know where the picture was taken.
  3. Accelerometer – This helps the smartphone determine how the user is holding the phone. For example, let’s say you are holding your phone vertically and looking at a website, but you want to have a wider viewing space, one would rotate the device horizontally. This also helps the camera to determine whether one is taking a landscape or portrait image. This also helps the user play certain games.
