MAT 2680 students’ instructions

MAT 2680 students, the instructions here are not for you! Do not comment on this post! See the post with your instructions over on the MAT 1575 site here.

MAT 1575 students’ instructions

MAT 1575 students, welcome to the MAT 2680 site! The students in MAT 2680 are learning to solve differential equations. A differential equation is an equation that involves derivatives of some mystery function, for example $f'(x) = f(x)$. A solution of a differential equation is just the mystery function $f(x)$ that satisfies the equation. Can you guess a solution of the differential equation $f'(x) = f(x)$?

MAT 1575 is a prerequisite for MAT 2680 and, to solve differential equations, the students in MAT 2680 have been evaluating an awful lot of integrals, just like you have been! Later in the semester, they will solve differential equations using infinite series; you are just starting your lessons on infinite series!

So the MAT 2680 students are like future versions of you, who have already passed MAT 1575. Even if you are not going to take MAT 2680 yourself, you probably have questions that the MAT 2680 students could answer.

  • Maybe you’d like to ask them what skills or material they think is most important from MAT 1575?
  • Maybe you’d like to ask them what they wish they’d learned better from MAT 1575?
  • Maybe you’d just like to ask them how they succeeded in MAT 1575?
  • Maybe you have a more personal question for them like what their major is, what they like about differential equations, what they liked about Calculus II, or what other math classes they have to take?

Now’s your chance to get some advice from students who are just slightly ahead of where you are on their math journeys!

So, your instructions for this assignment are simple: in the comments below, ask the MAT 2680 students any questions you like.

Since you have not commented in this group before, your comments will not appear right away. They have to be approved by the administrator first, but the administrator is me and I’ll approve any questions as long as they are not too inappropriate. Anyone who asks a question will earn participation credit.

    Questions:

What skills or materials do you think are most important for MAT 1575?

In the future if I were to take MAT 2680 should I review any specific topic from MAT 1575?

    • Imerson Memko

MAT 2680 by itself is not that bad. The hard part comes from actually remembering what you did in MAT1575. Integration by parts, substitution, trig identities(terrible I know), and partial fractions should become second nature to you. If you can do that, then MAT 2680 will be easy.

What’s your major? How many semesters have you been at City Tech?

Also, do you plan on going into a math-related field after college? If so, what is it and how are you planning to get there?

    • Cristofer Martinez

I’m studying Mechanical Engineering and lost count of the semesters taken but I’m on my 2nd to last semester for my Bachelor’s Degree. I really don’t plan on anything math related but if the oppurtunity arises to get a good job that requires math then I’ll have to save and study the material that I have so far.

Hi Russell, I’m studying Computer Engineering and I’m in my 2nd to last semester at city tech. That would make this semester my 6th semester at City Tech. I plan on going into the Engineering department for the MTA. As of now I would say I’m more interested in getting a job that handles computer technology. How I plan to get there is by building connections and having previous internships within the MTA. I’m currently interning for the LIRR at Farmingdale and it’s going great. This is my 2nd internship with the MTA and with this prior experience I feel it would help my chances when I apply for a job within their Engineering department after graduating.

Hey Russel, I am majoring in Applied Math and this is my 5 semester at City Tech. As of right now, I am planing on getting into the data science field and it’s a field that require a strong math fondation, that’s why I decided to get into the Applied Math program. How I plan to get there is by building connections, look for internships before I get my bachelors.

Which topics from MAT 1575 that u struggled with improved when taking MAT 2680?

    • Rafaeldiaz2435

I feel like I got better with integrals taking this class.

  4. Frank Lachapelle

    Hey guys!

What are some skills that ultimately made you better in 1575?

    • Joel Pena

Honestly, just taking the time to understand answers to questions. And then going back to that same problem another day and trying to answer it on your own. Then you can compare them

  5. TravisHarris1

My question is what are some tips that you can give on solving trig substitution questions?

  6. Erick Hidalgo

My question for you guys is how you guys recommend I can improve my calculus skills in order to hopefully pass this class?

How similar or different is Mat 2680 compared to Mat1575? What skills did you reuse From mat 1575 and used in Differential Equations

  8. Manuel Esteban

What are things that are commonly seen in MAT2680 that you remember from MAT1575

    • Luyanda

U substitutions, integration by parts, derivatives & integration.

  9. Brian Yi

Hello to any MAT 2680 students! Tell me, does MAT 2680 use any MAT 1575 similar methods in integrating, substitution, finding if the series converge or diverge?
